My guess is that is the answer. The Patriots did that after 9/11 because they wanted to divert attention and credit away from the individual and emphasize "team." That's all well and good, but even though the players might have used that time to behave like selfish individuals, which I rarely saw, I, as a fan, felt that it gave the game a more "personal" feel. For me, individual player introductions were about "putting faces to names" rather than the promotion of the individual as such. Right after 9/11, I thought that was a great gesture by the Patriots. But, I think we eventually need to return to normalcy with regards to things like this. We are preparing for war right now, so okay for this year. But, down the line, we just can't continue to be on the defensive. I like the idea of people's knowing who is inside all that gear and for many Super Bowl watchers that is their opportunity to.
Now, what about that piss-poor call by Callahan I made mention of on page 1 of this thread?

I know this season the Eagles were introduced as a team rather than as individuals. They chose to emphasize the team aspect and that no one player was more important than the team.
The thing that bothers me is when ABC does their unit introductions and the players say their name and their school... I like the whole concept of the introductions - see the player's face, hear his voice, find out where they played their college ball... but
Some of the players have to be smart-asses and give answers like "School of Hard Knocks" (Simeon Rice). I'm sure his alma-mater, which provided him with an all-expenses paid scholarship to play football was very happy with that answer. Some of the other players last night were mentioning their high schools or (in one case) their Pop Warner team.

I did not like that either!  That was cheese, stinky Limburger at that! I don't know why they let them get away with that! Yet again, "rights" win out over "responsibilities" in our American culture of the "self"/"self-important."

You guys take things to seriously. I thought that was actually pretty funny, especially Charles Woodson's Pop Warner team mention.
Why is it a responsibilty to "promote" a university? To tell you the truth, this doesn't affect you, me, or anyone else. The only people that would be bugged, like Philly mentioned, would be the university to get a cheap plug...

KJ, for me, it is just our apparent contemporary ineptitude to be able to come together and follow a rule that makes me shake my head and wonder. Do your own thing and thumb your nose at the rules. That's the M.O. of the day. Priding yourself for drawing outside the lines, which is en vogue these days, ironically, has its limits in the real world/when looking at the bigger picture. Such behavior comes off childish, insolent, unprofessional and, most of all, un-unified, especially on the world stage. In the least, it emphasizes the "self" and in doing so contradicts the spirit of, as is being discussed on another thread here on "the Sidelines", being introduced as a team. Sure, we can just say, "Whatever!", as it is really not of much consequence. But, to me, it is exemplary of a bigger ill, which cannot be ignored, especially in this day and age. A society can be no "better" than the individuals that comprise it. For better or worse, as it reflects on us I think worse, you would never see such behavior in Korea or Japan, and all a guy like myself is saying is that we should try to understand why we behave in such an unnecessarily foolish, though apparently fairly innocuous, way, moreover, on an international stage, especially in this day and age where things American are not so beloved anymore.
If you can find an annotated version of the great "American" philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson's essays "Spiritual Laws" and "Experience", I would suggest them as relevantly important readings if you are one inclined to do such reading. In short, it is great to have an idea of Emerson and Thoreau's concept of "Sleep Walking" to conduct a debate on this kind of topic or at least so as to have a better understanding of why some of us take things seriously that you don't.

I'm not argue you about your thinking on this subject, but, I just feel like you need to get my point of view.
Now, I know alot of people, like yourself, who have the same exact feelings you do Steg.
I believe you talked about us Americans as a society and how we are looked "down upon," for a lack of better words. Seriously, do you think this little incident on the introductions is going to cause a world-wide rage? Definently not. Now, you also talk about how this is all part of a much bigger "thing." How so? Each one of us holds a certain mentality on things. Being that I've been to many places in Europe(Particularly Spain, England, France and Germany, I am from Spain, I go there every summer.), I can't really say that people of other countries hold some "hatred" towards us. People actually would just like to meet me just because I am an American.
Yeah, there's always that certain asshole who seems to enjoy saying "Hoorah for Bin Laden" knowing full well that's going to tick me off. All in all though, there really isn't any real hatred, more so, envy and intrigue of our very rich in DIVERSITY country.
I'm blabbing on about something that is probably just a little off-topic on the subject matter, so let me just make my point and I'll move on. 
We need to stop taking into account all the little things that may be "morally wrong." They joked around, the same way, you, me, and anyone else on here joke around. All I'm saying is, take life easy. Don't get to irritated about things because in the end, it will literally kill ya.
And that folks, is my two very well thought out cents.

In any event, KJ 76, I admire the tenor of your response. You have a kind, tactful demeanor and because of that I can better appreciate where you are coming from. That is "the Gridiron" spirit! Thanks for exemplifying it!

This is kind of old news, but I thought it was well worth sharing with you guys. Earlier today while going to throw out my TV Guide that just finished yesterday, mind you I rarely read the articles in it, I just happened to flip to a page at the top of which it said "Special Super Bowl Edition" (of what turned out to be a regular feature called "Cheers & Jeers"). I read through the piece and given the comments made about the commercials, something we discussed on a separate thread, Celine Dion's rendition of "God Bless America", another hot discussion topic of another thread, the halftime show, and Penn & Teller's retarded antics, which we discussed right above, I found it to be something very worth passing on. It is a nice, quick read. A couple summary notes: they mention the zebra-referee and the dreadlocks-dog spots as being two of the best commercials and Celine Dion's performance got a big , which I thought was particularly interesting given our discussion. Anyway, I, in my infinite wisdom  , found the URL for last week's edition, so here is the link:
