VERY early to be starting this discussion, but I thought I would post it anyway as the two mentioned in the piece are two of my favorites, especially that there QB  , and absolutely undisputed "all-timers" of my generation, i.e. that I can identify with... of my time:

Boy did Steve Young say a mouthful in his acceptance speech today... With all my contemplation,  I never thought of this... He elucidated in what respect American football is the greatest sport. That is that it is the ultimate team sport. No play in football, unlike baseball, basketball, hockey or soccer, is performed alone. As he put it, nobody scores a touchdown all by himself. Every play in football involves the coordinated action of multiple players. Defense, even more so, is really all about the execution of the unit as opposed to the individual players: vis-a-vis other sports, one guy's missing an assignment can cause the defense to break down, but one player alone cannot make a defense. ... In this respect, doesn't football better than any other sport reflect real life? Isn't that what real life is all about? Nothing is done alone in this world... nothing! Really, though,... you may be of the persuasion that find his football-game commentary rather inane at this point of his career; I am NOT of that opinion, mind you, but he deserves to be in the Hall from the perspective of both his coaching and his broadcasting.

Well, its a no brainer that White gets in this year. But I hope Aikman doesn't make it.
Don't get me wrong, just because I DESPISE the cowboys, long before the jimmy johnson years, doesn't mean i don't respect the player that Aikman was.
He was good, but so was the REST of the team. I say just make one special bi-annual year for the Hall and induct the whole '93-94 Cowboys team.
My vote personally is for Thurman Thomas. They already got Jim Kelly in there, its Thurmans time now. The pure power and speed that Thurman had was second to none during his years with the Bills. And a HUGE reason why they made it to the superbowl 4 years in a row.
I'm sure Thurman and Kelly have their own little Norwood Voodoo doll and stick him every day for the rest of their lives.

Troy Aikman WILL be a first-ballot inductee into the NFL Hall of Fame!
Aikman was an OUTSTANDING Field General! You can muster all the talent you want, but if you don't have an on-the-field leader you're NOT going to win championships! Troy Aikman was that leader. You can say all you want about Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, the Offensive Line, the great "D", whatever...it was ALWAYS Aikman's team. Nobody on the team ever disputed that. I don't know if it's still true, but at one time, Aikman had the highest post-season passer rating in history! He always took it to a new level in the playoffs. Aikman deserves to be in the HOF along with all of the aforementioned players from those Dallas "Glory Years!" And 3 SUPER BOWL Championships in 4 years goes a long way towards earning votes! How many rings did Kelly and Thomas retire with? No disrespect intended, they were great players in their own rights, but they never did win "the BIG one." God Bless Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Jimmy Johnson, "Moose" Johnston....etc...etc...
DALLAS COWBOYS....4 LIFE!!!!!!!

Aikmen will be a first ballot inductee. Thats almost as much as a given as White.
With that said, you can't "win" the big one without a supporting cast. The Bills at least got there 4 yrs in a row with a whole squad of practically no namers.
The Cowboys are like the Yankees of Football. They were the most profitable (at that time) biggest salary, and most talented. Like I said, they should just induct the whole damn squad in a special HOF induction.
Thurman Thomas, Jim Kelly, and Andre Reed (who also is on the ballot this year) were pretty much the Buffalo Bills. The whole team damn near rode on their backs.
I guess I'm a sucker for the underdog. Yea, Aikman was the "leader" of the team. Jim Kelly also was inducted on his first ballot, but without winning the big one. That says something about his "Leadership" But this isn't about him, it's about Thurman.
Thurman is just as much deserving (if not more) than Aikman simply because he did so much with so little.
No disrespect, I just think Thurman is more deserving.

While I agree with the "hosury" of Monk FOR SURE, I just now during the commencement of the Super Bowl show learned about John Madden's election into the Hall. For that, I am HAPPY! I actually got a lump in my throat when I heard it and almost shed a tear. That's saying a lot coming from a Broncomaniac, no less. But, good people are good people and when good things happen to good people it shines a ray of hope on the world. John Madden, if nothing else aside from a great NFL guy and analyst, good coach with a Super Bowl victory to his name and outstanding ambassador of the NFL game, is good people... in my book. Congrats, John and all the '06 inductees. Thank you for the memories!

Actually, Irvin wasn't the pioneer, but you are right,...it was a former Cowboy,... still pisses me off today!!!!  What some said was the best Vikings team of the 70's.

Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach managed a nine play drive to midfield against the Minnesota Vikings defense. From midfield, with 24 seconds now remaining, Staubach lined up in the shotgun formation, took the snap, pump-faked left, then turned to his right and threw a desperation pass to wide receiver Drew Pearson, who was being covered by Minnesota Vikings cornerback Nate Wright. As the two players were running side by side downfield, it appeared that Pearson may have pushed off on Wright to gain an unfair position advantage to catch the ball, which is offensive pass interference—a violation of the rules. As the ball decended downward, Pearson caught the ball by trapping it against his right hip at the 5-yard line and ran into the end zone to make the score 16-14 in favor of Dallas, and what would eventually be the winning touchdown. Wright was unable to defend the pass, as he had tripped over Pearson's leg just as the ball came down."
