Title: 2015 Summer Meeting & Draft
Post by StegRock on Jun 4th, 2015, 3:29am
Well, fellas, 'tis that time of year...  Time to figure out when we are going to have our most anticipated and funnest day of the year, the annual GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft!

It is probably going to be the same drill as the last few years, though there is a sliver of a chance that I may make a visit back that way.  But, if I even go remains very uncertain, and when it would be is even more uncertain.  So, we should proceed as though the administration of the Summer Meeting & Draft is going to be done remotely, that is, on-line here on "the Gridiron" and by conference call.  That said, other than the (fairly remote) possibility of my being there this summer, my schedule is wide open.  Even if I were to visit New Jersey, I would make whatever date we agreed upon work, and, bottom line, I can do any weekend from late July until kickoff! :)

SO, with all that said, let's get to hammering this out. At the very least, it would be good for everybody to list any "no-go" dates! Secondly, stating preferences would be good. The later the better, I suppose; earlier if need be. Let's get to it...

No go dates for me are:

August 29th - September 6th   The family and I will be driving around Canada.

ALERT!!!

As it turns out, I probably should have waited 24 hours to start this thread...

All of a sudden, the chances of my being back in New Jersey during a "sweet spot" for a fantasy football draft have skyrocketed!!! Well, maybe not the best for those who love the last-minute draft, but it is looking highly likely that I WILL be back in Jersey this summer sometime around the end of July until mid-August!

If you guys want to do this LIVE WITH STEG this year (potentially one last time for old-times sake at Frank's?), we should target the first three weekends in August, that is: the 1st or 2nd, 8th or 9th, or 15th or 16th. Honestly, the best of those from the perspective of the guy coming all the way from Hawaii (under some duress, mind you),... eh-hem,... would be the weekend of Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th. My second choice would be the 1st or 2nd. Indeed, the 15th or 16th could be a little rough.

With that said, thoughts???

A live draft would be great.  The only conflict I have for the first 3 weekends in August is on Sunday, August 9th for part of the day.

Have tickets for a baseball game at 1:00 pm but I would be available in person around 5:00 pm.  I assume you guys would start earlier.  If the draft were at Frank's house, that would work out (game is Lakewood Blue Claws) which is not too far.

Other than that, if the draft is by phone at night, should be ok whenever.

Can we do the lottery before cuts again?  May lead to trade activity.

I prefer it to be as late as possible to kickoff. Im open

I will get back to ya on open dates for me.

DB I think your idea is a good one, I would be open to the lottery being done before cutdowns, actually the earlier may be better if it works for the other guys I would support it.

Based on the potential new dates:

July 25th and 26th -  No issues

August 1+2 = I can participate by phone, but would be unable to make it up to Jersey.

August 8+9 = No issues

August 15+16= No issues

I'm flexible.  I don't see any potential conflicts.

ALERT!!!

Heyas, guys, update on the Steg front... Looks like I am going to be high-maintenance this year... :-/ I apologize up front. Please understand that the circumstances that potentially/likely have me going back that way this summer are complicated.

If I am going to make it back and we are going to have a live draft, I have to admit at this juncture that the weekend of August 15th and 16th is almost definitely not going to be feasible. In fact, if we are serious about a live draft relative to my being there, we probably should consider the weekend of July 25th and 26th. We have conducted the GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft that early once before, so it is not without precedence. (Mind yous, guys, my suggesting an ever earlier draft date totally goes against my self-interest as a team owner. Given the makeup of my roster in particular, the earlier the draft is, the way worse it is for me.)

Ultimately, given the uncertainty of my circumstances this summer, I think we should come up with two dates: an earlier one accommodating a potential live draft on the weekends of July 25th or 26th, August 1st or 2nd, or August 8th or 9th (Saturday, August 8th has been looking like a good date thus far), and a later one as close to the 2015 season opener on September 10th as possible (as, if I am not going to be there, the pressure to do it early is off) (with that said, Steve, you do know that you knocked out TWO weekends in one fell swoop, indeed, the final two before the kickoff of the season :-/).

Alright, let's get to it...

Having the draft in July is ridiculous, way to early and way too much can happen to influence a draft as players go down. I vote the latest possible date available

Well, again, we have done it that early before (and, in any event, as I stated, given my roster, I arguably stand to lose the most by having the draft early). It is about the possibility of my being in Jersey this year and our getting together for it. If I am going to be there, the latest it is in all likelihood going to be able to be is August 9th. If I am not going to be there, I tend to agree with you. Of course, the last two weekends seem to be off the table.

I checked the schedule and the season does not start until September 10th. The preseason begins August 9th.

This gives us the additional option of September 7th (Labor Day) if this is by phone. Also, it means that there is pretty much no difference between July 25-26 and August 8th since no preseason will games will have taken place.

At this point, I am good for July 25-26 if that is necessary.

The weekend of August 1 is 100% out for me.
The weekend of August 8 is #1 preference for live draft.
Other than that, I'm open and would love to host again if it works out. The later the better for phone draft.

Happy Father's Day and First Day of Summer, Fellas!

I am 99.9% sure I will be back in Jersey from around July 20th until about August 10th.  As such, based on the discussion here as well as those with whom I have spoken, I am going to go ahead and declare Saturday, August 8th as the day for our 2015 GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft.  Just in case I do not make it back, which again is highly unlikely, I am going to declare the backup remote (phone/on-line) draft date to be Sunday, August 23rd.

As for the Draft Lottery, it would be best to do it before I leave.  You guys seem to want to have it done early, anyway.  Let's plan to do it on Sunday, July 12th.

Sound like a plan?  If this all works for you, I would appreciate your confirming, and, if not, all the more important for you to reply a.s.a.p.

Over and Out,
Steg

Also, Trout gave me a buzz a little bit ago.  He is good to go, too, on August 8th!  Woo-hoo!  Looks like we are nailing this into place with relative ease this year. [smiley=woohoo.gif]

Heyas, fellas! Happy [smiley=patriot.gif] 4th!!!

The LIVE 2015 GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft date has been set for Saturday, August 8th!!!

The Draft Lottery, however, is but a week away, set for next Sunday, July 12th. As for a start time, let's say 7:00 p.m. (EST) (that would be 1:00 in the afternoon for me). Also, be on the lookout over the next few days for an e-mail from me containing the details on the conference call.

Finally, based on the scheduled date for the draft, cut-down day will be Sunday, August 2nd. Protection lists will need to be in before midnight (lest your squad will be subject to draconian cuts based on your 2014 Week 17 starting lineup). The preferred way to submit them will be by way of a protection-lists thread that I will post here on our message board (indeed, that is the only way I hope they are submitted).

Over and out... [smiley=onit.gif]

Spreadsheet for the lottery has been sent.  As a reminder, Steg will chose numbers 1-15 which will then correlate to the spreadsheet.   Numbers will be drawn until the lottery order is selected.   Here are the number of entries each person has:

Name   # Entries
Travis      5
DB              4
Joe              3
Steg              2
Frank      1

Steg is back in NJ!  Standby flying actually went TOTALLY smoothly, save for not being able to get on the first flight out of Honolulu on Saturday and then, by choice mind you, losing one day, by choice meaning that I decided that I did not want to gate-hop on Saturday and tapped out right away.  Sunday-Monday, though, straight through! Heya, Francis...  'Tis been awhile (five years)...  A little hazy on how to get down to you in old Uncle Tom's River.  I kind of recall having, at some point in the journey, to hit up Redskin Springs Road or something like that.  I just remember feeling so racist as I was driving down it. [smiley=LMFAO.gif] Anyway, could you pop us an e-mail or private message with your home address and perhaps an optimal phone number at which to reach you?  Also, 1:00 start time good for you?

In response to an e-mail inquiry, the "official" start time is set for 1:00 (EST).  We do not have anything really to discuss, just get Warner his plaque after our new "spitting-on-the-plaque" ceremonies we will be commencing this year. ;) So, especially for our remote participants, I would be surprised if we are commencing the draft any later than 1:30-1:45.

THAT SAID, it is a SATURDAY, and a group of us are getting together, some of us having come great distance, for the first time in FIVE YEARS and not again for an unknown number of YEARS.  So, it is much appreciated if those participating remotely can keep that in mind and roll with things a bit, taking Xanax as needed.  Not that we have ever rushed, but we are on even less of a time crunch than when we have typically had the draft, that is, on a Sunday.

On that note, [smiley=note.gif] for the boys that will be in the hood, I am even thinking some after-draft, late-night frolicking like the old days...???

I'm cool with a long draft.  You guys know me -- I don't get impatient with the slowness of picks.  As long as I can whine about my player getting taken right ahead of me, insult people (especially Danny) for their picks, and shoot the breeze about all things fantasy football, I'm good to go.

Travis, i am the best drafter in this league. Last year i took shit for getting Hill, now top five RB. I have surprises for all today as my scouts and I have it dialed in. I am hired for advise.

Title: Re: 2015 Summer Meeting & Draft
Post by Travistotle on Aug 8th, 2015, 12:54pm
Hill was a good pick, though let's be honest -- Bernard got hit big with injuries last year, so some luck was involved in Hill getting the opportunity in the first place.

I think "top-5" is overstating his value. Everyone knows Bernard is getting snaps and stealing carries in some kind of time-share.

I would think if you were the best drafter you'd be winning more championships, either by dominating with young studs or parlaying your young studs into veteran stars.

That said, I wasn't saying you were the worst drafter. Just that it's sometimes easiest to pick on your picks.

Here's what I said that elicited your quoted respones above: (1) that Hill was a good pick, (2) that Hill isn't a top 5 rb, (3) that being the best drafter would have gotten you more than 1 championship in the last 10 years, and (4) that it's tons of fun making fun of your picks.  I think everyone who according to you is qualified to judge these matters (i.e., apparently, those who have won multiple championships) would agree with those points I made.

Besides, are you saying that to make a competent judgment about who is the best drafter in the league you have to have won more championships than anybody?  If so, not even you can talk -- several people have won more times than you, so I'm afraid you, too, are going to have to "zip it" and leave it to the big boys to decide who's the best drafter.

Get your facts right Travis, not several people at all, i think only one which is DB. Go take another Sammy Watkins with the first overall pick, that was a great pick, almost as good as my Jarmarcus Russell pick

Title: Re: 2015 Summer Meeting & Draft
Post by Travistotle on Aug 8th, 2015, 1:22pm
Wow, if you think Watkins was nearly as bad as Russell you ARE a bad drafter.

Go compare Dez Bryant's first year stats with Sammy Watkins.  Then get back to me.

Wait a minute. YOU took RUSSELL?!?! Yikes.

Nice!  This is the stuff that like I have ALL of, like even dating back to 1989 and the Mark Malone League.  I am going to get it up here someday in the "near" future, at least the stuff dating back to 1993, the inaugural year of the GBRFL.
