On this, the very first post of this thread, I will maintain position-by-position cheatsheets. This will also act as the CBFL Draft commentary thread. PLEASE do NOT put comments on the picks and administration/league discussion threads on the CBFL board! Put comments on picks and how the draft is unfolding HERE! Thank you!

The following comment was misposted down on the CBFL board...

I really wanted to take Reggie Bush but there were a couple things that pushed me over the edge with Addai.  No return yards or TD's for Individuals here (hurts bush) and Addai has a bit more of a clear backfield then what bush dealing with mccallister there as well...

I thought i'd just get a comment up about my first ever selection with the CBFL!!!

Good stuff!!!

Incidentally, Takster, your first-ever CBFL pick of Addai was definitely a goodie!!!  I would have SERIOUSLY considered him at 9.  As it stands, you've probably forced me to take the guy "I want to take"...

I'll take on all side bets, that I know exactly who Steg's first pick will be.

I came pretty close to drafting Addai with pick #6, I like him alot this year.

So far all picks are pretty predictable and very good. It will start getting a little more interesting as things move along.

Seems as if defenses are rather important to have in this League so i'd like to have the best one.  I don't pick again until the last selection of round 4 and the top d/st seem to go before then in past CBFL drafts or close to then...I'll jump the gun to get what I need!!!     Adios!!

I know your dad's gonna tell you otherwise, Nateman, but that was (significantly, if not way) too early to be picking a defense.  The fact that last year the team that won had the best defense and teams kind of finished roughly in an order that coincided (read, "coincidence") with how they ended up ranking just shows that teams were picked fairly consistently up-and-down.  PrimeTime, last year's Champ, augmented a great offense with a solid defense.  That = championship.  Just look to one year prior.  The team that won it all, DirkDiggler, had a run-of-the-mill good defense.

But, anyway, Nate, the Bears should be good.  Coming from the guy who's been participating in this, either as a drafter or running it, for about 10 years now (before it was even a league back with FFToday), it's not a really bad pick, but it's also not a particularly good pick at this point in the draft.  Last year, when Primer picked the Bears it was a much better pick... simply because he got them later.  You're gonna have to pray for some bad picks to be made so as to sew up a hole you're going to have on offense because of this early pick of a defense.

In any event, it's great seeing the wheels turning. At least, you've got a strategy and are employing it. That's how you learn the nuances and come to distinguish them from the generalities; learn from your mistakes (as the cliche goes) and improve.  Just don't be rigid (ever in life).  THEN, you will improve! ...

...

Oh, and, by the way, the "Cheatsheets" in the initial post of the thread have been updated through the latest pick!

I did a bit of my OWN research on the CBFL steg...I noticed that since the beginning of the league the top defences DO in fact coincide with the top finishing teams.

Were there exceptions?? yes, there were but I'm playing a percentage game here like i do in poker and I'm going with the odds...

Hard to argue with the facts...

Again...my next pick wouldn't be until the last one in round 4.  I GUARANTEE that another defense will go if not 2 or 3 before my next pick...(if past draft analysis rings true)

Okay,... kiddo.  I try to throw some words of wisdom out there... coming from almost a DECADE of experience running this show, who, in fact, CREATED the rules for the league, and (NOTE, this is fun hyperbole) some modern-day whiz kid, who's just shown up on the scene, has run a spreadsheet program and proven Laozi and the Daoist sensibility, so to speak, wrong.  Quite contrary to being "hard to argue with", mere facts, strung together, (like a "good team on paper that plays poorly) paint a very mysterious and misleading picture.  It's the processing of facts and information into "truth" and "understanding". Facts are like the walls of a maze, usually you have to acknowledge and "obey" them; sometimes you can climb over them, see through them or break them down (in both senses).  The path you take (and how you deal with the different kinds of walls of the maze) is your truth and indicates your level of understanding.  One thing, true understanding/understanding of the truth, which comes only after great cultivation, will tell you that this is a maze, however, with no exit.  So, it becomes "how" you navigate the maze. The path is the way, the Dao.  The walls are the obstacles.  The so-called facts are what we overcome.  ...  Facts that seem undeniable at one level of understanding are realized to be spurious at another and not even seen on yet another.  As long as you are open to that, you're okay.  Don't be rigid.  Don't ever think you've figured it out.  In life, with everything, we're all just taking steps.  Behave without hubris, acknowledge those who have taken more steps than you, and you'll be good to go... on YOUR way.

Offhand,... "snap back to (this) reality",... ... just to "entertain" the notion, and not be an ignoramus myself (something that is not easy for me to do; that's why I think I am fairly good at doing it), ... did you happen to notice/calculate that TOP offenses ALSO coincide with the teams that finish at the top of the standings???

As a matter of fact it looks like the top scoring teams were the teams that won?!?!  unbelievable!!

I could hardly look at the base of my offense so far as anything less then tops!!

I also know that injuries are a HUGE deal considering we can't make waiver moves, however, a player who hasn't been able to go through an NFL season un-injured was picked 16th overall...could be more of a stretch then the proven top rated defensive selections to me...

In response to the CREATOR of the rules....that really means nothing to me...do you think Dr. James Naismith would be better at basketball then Michael Jordan just because he created the game?!?  Do you think Major Walter C. Wingfield is better then Roger Federer just because he created field tennis?!?  come on now!!

then again...i'm just some "whiz-kid" off the street with a spreadsheet program...

lastly, I am not saying you don't know what you're talking about...I'm saying that looking at my draft situation and KNOWING that defenses will move in the 4th round FOR SURE (if not earlier) I pulled the trigger on my #1 a bit early...which i noted in my previous post...

"I'll jump the gun to get what I need!!!"

I already knew this was early for this pick but i wasn't sitting with a mid to late 3rd round pick or even a early to mid 4th round pick....had to adjust for the draft order...

I smell someone who wanted the chicago bears defense themselves is what i smell!!!!! ahahaha

Well,... voila,... right after my pick came a "bad" pick... or, at least, one that plays right into your hands.  It will push a good offensive player toward you, and, if you've calculated correctly, other ensuing picks here on the near horizon will play into both of your hands.

But,... and I think you realize this as you said as much yourself in your own post,... really, the fact that your "guarantee" has already panned out and may continue to do so is much more a function of a hyper-awareness that now exists because of last year's heated discussions, discussions that you have observed, let's say, "closely" (in both possible senses), than anything else.

In any event, to press your position, (and you can take this question rhetorically) did you consider/calculate the order in which defenses were picked vis-a-vis how they actually ended up ranking vis-a-vis how those CBFL teams finished?

ALL of that having been said and asked, I too have to acknowledge this, albeit, I believe, erroneous, hyper-awareness of the impact of D/ST and "substantively" respond to it and not just be in denial.  I mean... I can refute the over-importance being attributed to defense right now, but I cannot deny the over-importance being attributed to defense right now.  It too, in "fact", is part of the "reality" in which we have to deal.  I digress...  Like tends to be the case in the world, I think it gets us away from the truth of the matter, but reality is reality.  Reality is (when and) where we are.  It's what's here and now, and it can't be dismissed.  You can't work "without" reality.  You have to work "within" it.  Truth and understanding are only attained within and through reality, albeit almost always notwithstanding reality. That meta-reality is what's needing to be overcome.  IN ANY CASE, you, Nateman, I will say, on your part, have done your due diligence and adjusted to this reality.  I question whether you have over-adjusted (and I think that is fair to do), but that still leaves unanswered the question of how (successfully) I will adjust to this reality... Perhaps, in the end, not as good as you...

It looks like you've adjusted to this new reality, Jim. BUT, no so much that you took a third D/ST here early on.

Let me say that I hated taking T.O. because I do not want to have any rooting interest in him.  I wanted Holt or Wayne.  I felt that I had no choice, dammit.

Yeah, maybe I more than like him  .

I'm just saying that in my opinion he was by far the best available non-RB and that as a Redskins fan and TO hata' it pained me to take him.   .
