San ANtonio may be a ploy, but watch out for the Saints move to LA.  Yep, the Los Angeles Saints.  Louisiana is clearly going to default on their agreement with the Saints.  So that paves the way for Benson to move to LA.  No matter where the Saints end up, they have a road paved of gold ahead of them.

The "Aints" won't be in LA, there is no interest in ANY NFL team out of LA. If there were the Rams or the Raiders would be there. Don't forget about Albuquerque stranger things have happend. Bensen turned down the thought of moving to San Antonio at this time.

Word now is that Benson may just flat out sell the team and let the new owner move them if he wants.  Benson came out and said he received over a Billion $$ offer.  (yes, BILLION).

If I was him I would take the money and run.  No headaches and one heck of a return on his investment.

Any sport besides basketball that ventures to San Antonio WILL FAIL (unless the sport is soccer.) There are too many inteligent minds in the NFL who look at population densities, cultural subsets, and ethnic diversity within an urban population usually miss the point. Without these minds, you end up with the idiots who thought that moving the NHL from Canada to the South was a great idea.

There are too many mexicans who could care less about "gridiron" to make San Antone' a worthwhile franchise, and anybody who's ever been there should know that!

San Antonio will only be the Saints temporary home and L.A. is out of the picture now.  It looks like the right thing is going to be done; it seems like the Saints are definitely going to stay right where they belong now... in New Orleans.  From "The REAL Feed":

Calling a T.O. for N.O.
Yahoo! News: Democratic Party (05.09.2005 04:46)
Saints owner Tom Benson and the NFL should give New Orleans time to recover before pressing the city about stadium plans.

As for stop-gap options, here's what's topping "The REAL Feed":

NFL notebook: Saints narrow new-home choices
The Seattle Times: Seahawks (05.09.2005 04:49)
The New Orleans Saints said yesterday they are considering three options where to play their home games this season: LSU's Tiger Stadium...

Here's a LOCAL report on this from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"Saints exploring options"

One of the options being mulled is to play all of their home games AWAY.

I can't find much in print that claims this, but is owner Tom Benson really at this time considering moving the Saints? I seem to be hearing this prevalently on the airwaves and televisions. Does anybody have the inside track on this? Is this guy really this big of a (capitalist/capitalizing) asshole? I just can't believe it. On "the Gridiron Newsstand" I can only find this kind of rhetoric:

Saints set up in San Antonio

Team stress committment to New Orleans; site of home games undetermined

So, what's going on here? Anyone have a clue?

Ultimately, Benson got fucked in this situation. He is in a no win situation. He loses in the long term and short term. He can stay in Baton Rouge for this season, but who the hell in that area has any extra money for football tickets? Luxury boxes? But he would seem to be the "good guy" and could be a rallying point for every one. (OR, everyone could ignore the Saints). Or, he can play in San Antonio. Seems like a reasonable solution since thee accomidations in Baton Rouge are not too good, especially factoring in the evacuees. Problem is San Antonio has a crap stadium too. No big time luxury boxes. Either way, the Saints ain't gonna be in a good situation this year.

Now, look at long term. It is no secret Benson wanted to move the team. Now if he moves the team he is an "asshole" for abandoning New Orleans. If he stays, he is in the same situation next year with no New Orleans stadium. I am pretty confident that a new stadium is NOT going to be a priority for New Orleans..... so what is an owner to do? He probably should just move to LA at the end of this year........  Either way, Benson is a bad guy.

From "The REAL Feed":

San Antonio mayor eyes Saints for 2006 season

San Antonio's mayor's taking advantage of this situation just seems so scum-baggy to me...  This is capitalism, the deification of money, both at its worst and at its best,... which is horrifying ... to think about.  This is what capitalism has to offer humanity...

It makes NO sense for the Saints to go back to New Orleans. Fact is that that this thread discussing this was started WAY before the hurricane. It was a possibility back in May this was going to happen. Why should the fact a hurricane make them stay? Fact is New Orleans is going to be smaller in population because many (smart) residents are NOT going to return.

Katrina sucked! It was a horrible disaster. So the loss of a football team is the least of the city of New Orleans problems. The Saints were a problem to the state of LA. before the hurricane. They could not afford the payments.

If the Saints don't go to San Antonio, then L.A. bound they are.

You may be right in fact, DD,... BUT, in fact, you are not right...

...

Anyway, from "The REAL Feed":

New Orleans mayor rips Saints owner (AP) (and, as well, he should)
Yahoo! News: Democratic Party (19.10.2005 16:36)
Mayor Ray Nagin disparaged Saints owner Tom Benson on Wednesday for working with San Antonio officials to permanently keep the NFL team in Texas. The mayor's comments came after the departures of two top Saints executives who were supportive of keeping the Saints in Louisiana. Nagin is concerned...

FaceOff: Football (21.10.2005 17:22)
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has not made any plans to move the NFL team to San Antonio.

Rhetoric... or veracity...???  I think the former...

UPDATE... and this one is NOT just rhetoric...  It's "realistic",... so to speak...  From "The REAL Feed":

Saints Could Move
Washington Post: Sports (27.10.2005 07:40)
The NFL will consider relocating the Saints to Los Angeles if New Orleans is unable to recover from Hurricane Katrina, sources said.

Here's to hopin' New Orleans can somehow get it together good enough to keep the team...

Just an update...  This is getting ugly and I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that that's "the plan"... From "The REAL Feed":

Saints appear to be short-timers in New Orleans
Sports: NFL / Football -- Charlotte.com (04.11.2005 11:43)
If the future of the New Orleans Saints is in owner Tom Benson's hands, it doesn't look like the future is in New Orleans. That would be a shame. If the Saints leave New Orleans permanently in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, NFL owners should wear bags over their heads, just as Saints fans embarr...

Well, the latest,... from "The REAL Feed":

Season ticket sales for Saints going 'awesome
ESPN: NFL (03.03.2006 12:28)
Without the team running a single advertisement, renewals for New Orleans Saints season tickets are nearly four times what they were a year ago.

Doesn't look like such a potentially bad economic move after all, huh, DD???

I'm just happy that, however it came to be, the "right" thing looks like it's going to be done...  The irony is that Katrina may have ended up saving the Saints from moving out of New Orleans in the long run, which seemed inevitable going into last season.

Increased season ticket sales at this point in time are not that big a deal. Hell, the sales are increased yes. BUt does it say how many people did not renew their tickets? The article even states that the ticket sales are high because so many people have credits from last year.....  what will happen next year when those credits are gone??

As a human being qua human being,... I stay in New Orleans!

My being qua human is prior to and more important to me than my being qua business owner...  Of course, I am not business owner, Tom Benson, owner of an NFL franchise.  I am human being, Steve Stegeman, who happens to run a little fantasy football web site (with long-term hopes).
