"Bad news" for the NFL
« on: May 27th, 2005, 7:15pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

As per "The REAL Feed":

Pasquarelli: Sharing isn't easy
ESPN: NFL (27.05.2005 16:56)
Revenue sharing stands in way of new CBA by Len Pasquarelli

Is the American system so messed up that we don't even know a good thing when we have it?  When the common good devolves merely into what the majority (in power) wants or what any single class wants and can effect a change to, we no longer have a "good in common". Rampant selfishness will be the death of our nation, maybe not tomorrow, but the wheels are currently rolling in that direction, or should I say, spinning out of control...

The thing is the players of three other major sports surely want the NFL's system to come to ruins.  They want the NFL to come down to their level... and then they won't look as bad in comparison anymore and the new status quo will be lower than the last... and so on.

I suppose that this news is neither bad nor good.  This report bascially says that the perception of what's going on is bad while the reality of the matter is, well, maybe not good, but not bad, either.  From "The REAL Feed":

This could be considered good news in a way, actually.  From "The REAL Feed":

Congress not backing down on steroid testing
ESPN: NFL (07.07.2005 14:40)
Lawmaker: Despite progress, steroid law likely by Associated PressWASHINGTON -- Baseball and other major U.S. professional leagues have made progress battling steroid use but not enough for Congress to back off on legislation, a key Republican lawmaker said Thursday."There is certainly movement...

It's just a shame that our federal government even needs to get involved in matters of professional sports at all.

While I think what Lamar Hunt is doing is totally stand-up, I think, as a modern-day reality of the NFL, this is a bummer...  From "The REAL Feed":

Chiefs withdraw request to host 2015 Super Bowl
The Sports Network: NFL (26.05.2006 00:00)

...

And, I find this yucky, too...

Don't blame Redskins' Snyder for trying to win
NFL News: RealFootball365.com (26.05.2006 02:00)
The bottom line is the NFL is nothing if not a business, and Dan Snyder, the ultimate businessman, has brought a win-first, big-money mentality to Washington.

"Win-first, big-money mentality," BUT gridiron-MORON attitude... unlike Jerry Jones, who I mention only because he's mentioned in the article, i.e. not that he's my favorite, either, but who, I must admit, knows football as well as the business of the NFL.

This is more like "sad news related to the NFL"...  From "The REAL Feed":

Craig 'Ironhead' Heyward dies at age 39
FOXSports.com :: NFL (27.05.2006 23:12)
Former NFL fullback Craig "Ironhead" Heyward died Saturday after a 7 1/2-year fight with brain cancer, his son's high school football coach said. He was 39.

Heyward spent 11 seasons in the NFL with New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis and Indianapolis. The former University of Pittsburgh ...

I remember "Ironhead" well...  What a tough running back... ... A brain tumor... He is at peace now...  Give his family peace, Lord...

I actually don't quite know what to say about this...  Currently from atop "The REAL Feed":

Concussions a dirty little secret for many in the NFL
SI.com: NFL (26.10.2006 03:42)

It's violent, contact sport,... the participants of which know the risk... and reap the resultant reward... Not that I am the hugest of fans,... but does boxing, for example, where I think concussions are a much bigger issue, actually, receive this kind of flak?  I mean,... if you want to get right down to it,... I think knee injuries are a much bigger concern when you want to talk of the condition of aging retired NFL players.  These guys' quality of life in the golden years can be terrible due to knee injuries more than head injuries.

I'd be willing to bet that the concussions are getting more interest than knee injuries because the brain is considered a more "important" body part than a knee. Anyway...

From the article:
Quote:
Concussions, it seems, are the NFL's dirty little secret. It's not just that they happen so often, but that the league doesn't seem to be doing much about it.

I'm not sure what more the league can do about it. They've already legislated helmet-to-helmet hits and penalize (and fine) players who tackle by leading with their helmets. The helmets themselves will probably never be able to protect the players any more than they do now because of the nature of a concussive injury. I listened to Merrill Hoge today on the Dan Patrick show and he had to retire because of concussions. It was so bad for him that, for about a 4-month period after a concussion, he couldn't leave his house because he was so disoriented that he'd get lost if he so much as went around the corner. When asked about more protection for players and more rules concerning contact with the head, Hoge was decidedly AGAINST it. He felt that there were too many rules governing it already.

Yea, I see where you are coming from, Jeff...  But, you know there is kind of a "but" there...  If the opposing army is shooting at your soldiers' knees, you can protect your heads until the cows come home, but it ain't gonna help.  But, yea, there's a middle ground.
