the Bleachers
If you want to chat about anything under the sun besides football and without its having to be intertwined in a football-related conversation, such as other sports, baby announcements, cooking, pets, politics, economics, religion, philosophy, sex, chicks, books, whatever, etc., etc., as long as it is not covered by one of our other "thematic" threads like the "Happy Birthdays to our fellow Gridironers" thread or the "Get to know your Gridironers" threads, this "STICKY THREAD" is for you!  Enjoy!

Most of you all know that my connections to South Korea run deep.  It's a love-hate relationship, for sure, but I HATE to see this...  (I'm going to swing yous all through "the English Master" forum...)

This is in the ballpark of being tantamount to our losing the Statue of Liberty, or maybe the better analogue might be the Washington Monument.  Whatever, it's terrible. [smiley=no.gif]

Not really the same.  Their monument was 610-years-old.  Much deeper.

Well, America itself ain't even 610-years-old.  But, you get my point...  Actually, having lived there for seven years, I would say that it, relatively speaking, isn't quite as bad as (it would be to us if we lost) the Statue of Liberty, but worse than (it would be for us if we lost) the Washington Monument.  It's not just the age that matters.  It's the (relative) symbolism.

Next Sunday is race  [smiley=cruisin.gif]day in Indy. This 25th of May marks the 92nd running of this great race. Until now, no other event on the 25th of May came with more tradition than the Indy 500.

Now on this date, The 25th of May, 651 Members pause for a moment of silence to honor the death of the FFLA, which officially died May 25th, 2004 at 11:59 am.

The ceremony of silence will include the setting of the  [smiley=RIP.gif]headstone. The headstone will read
Quote:
a bunch of testosterone-overflowing immature and/or relative do-nothing ingrates

Affectionatly!

Head Coach - Mike McCarthy

QB's - Marc Bulger, Matt Hasselbeck, Alex Smith, JaMarcus Russell, Trent Edwards

RB's - Marion Barber, Reggie Bush, Julius Jones, DeAngelo Williams, DeShaun Foster, Kenny Watson, Ryan Grant, Kolby Smith, Ron Dayne

RC's - André Johnson, Torry Holt, Ronald Curry, Greg Jennings, Marques Colston

PK's - Kris Brown

Mind you, I really like KGB's (Kevin Garnett Boston's) style of play, but I must admit I was embarrassed by the behavior he exhibited during his post-game interview with Michelle Tafoya.  I mean... I was embarrassed for him.  The word "dignified" didn't even come close to applying.  He himself would have to cringe looking back at himself. :-[ I know I would.  But, I am happy for him, Ray-Ray, and Double-P...ierce.

I mean... I think... "unselfish-ish" (it's all relative in the modern NBA... and professional American sports, in general, I suppose)...

Title: Re: the Bleachers
Post by StegRock on Jun 23rd, 2008, 1:37am
Might I suggest some alternatives to MC's signature line, something a little more definitive and actionable (as "that little extra" is, I contend, too loose, vague and relative and, thus, not particularly meaningful or, at least, not readily applicable)?  Here are some meatier alternatives (that give you a little more to grab on to)...

"The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is a matter of stepping up to the plate when the opportunity to make a difference,... make the difference,... make that difference manifest, presents itself."

In other more pithy words,...

"The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the difference you make."

Or, a different way of looking at it,...

"The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is merely a matter of perspective."

Title: Re: the Bleachers
Post by MordecaiCourage on Jun 23rd, 2008, 11:12am
nice Steg...however "that little extra" is a play on words that if written otherwise gets lost. I'm not seeking the philosphical meaning of the phrase as much as I am looking for that light play on words. I am keeping it light (loose, vague, relative), while you are keeping it real (definative, actionable, meatier)!! ;D

Uh,... duh... [smiley=shootmyself.gif] Now, I gotchya... get it! :D Literally, which is the way I was approaching it (and typically approach things), it is vague, relative and loose.  But, figuratively, it is just a straight-up pun, and a good one at that.  The latter, and not the former, way is the way you mean it to be taken, the way it is meant to be taken.  I will say this, though...  The pun is clever and witty for sure, but, moreover, vis-a-vis my final interpretation there above, it could be taken in a deeper Buddhistic way (the ordinary as extraordinary) that really gives it some [more (philosophical)] pop.  A Buddhist, especially of the Zen variety, [smiley=zenmaster.gif] would love it.  It would be mantra in no time. [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] It just, unfortunately, got lost on little old me. ?.?.? I just missed it. [smiley=doh.gif] This is definitely one of those cases where my close inspection of the trees had me lost in the forest I was in. [smiley=lost.gif] ... ;)

Guys and gals, I will be "away from my desk" here very soon.  We are going to lose internet access at any moment; I have to run out, and, when I return, it may be off... though I am hoping we have it through tonight (Hawaii time).  In any event, I'll be gone for much, if not most of the time from now through the month of August.  Take care of my "first" baby here in my absence!  ...  We're going to miss Hawaii GREATLY! [smiley=palmtree.gif] ... [smiley=touching.gif] We did love it here and hope a return does, at least, present itself as a "possibility" to us in the future (in the form of a tenure-track position in the Chaminade U. Changing gears...  How about the LAST GAME EVER presently underway at Yankee Stadium?  I'm not a Yankee fan AT ALL anymore, haven't been for about half my life at this point, but I sort of was when growing up and spent a few evenings up there with my high school buds.  GREAT memories!  GBRFLer "Flesh is Fantasy" a.k.a. Dave Trout shares in them.  I don't know where I stand on the history-versus-progress argument.  I just know that many great moments will be ushered out of our consciousness with the closing and demolition of that stadium as we tend to associate events with places and, in any case, it is sad to see the end of a GREAT, LOOOOONG-STANDING ERA.  I hope the new digs are all they are cracked up to be, minus the history, which I suppose won't matter in a quarter century, anyway, given the apparent epidemic of A.D.S. in America.  Anyway, good-bye, old friend... :'(

Well, boyz and girlz, as I have somewhat of a lull here and before baby [smiley=newbie.gif] Monica Marie arrives, I thought I would take a moment to bring yous up to speed on where we are in life, the [smiley=thumbsup.gif] good, the [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] bad, and the [smiley=zombie.gif] ugly... and the circumstances that provide the context underlying developments on "the Gridiron" this year...

If I only knew the 84-hour nightmare that would commence upon my departure from home to work on my last day of work in Hawaii, Friday, July 25th, I might have just thrown in the towel, waved the white flag [smiley=surrender.gif] and crawled back into bed, rethinking everything. [smiley=shootmyself.gif] Well, no, I wouldn't have, but I would have gone about things much differently.  For one, I would NOT have worked right up until the end.  Don't get me wrong.  We accomplished a ton, BUT we underestimated.  Looking back, we had a week's worth of work to do with only just a little over a weekend to do it... and a plane to catch. [smiley=scared.gif] But, we all go through that kind of stuff in life, right?  That's the basics.

However, that is only the tip of the iceberg [smiley=cold.gif] of the nightmare [smiley=Freddie.gif] of that weekend and the bigger picture...  Where I was working, if I didn't mention it around here, was in the office of the posh Waikiki condominium Sans Souci (you look at pretty much any panoramic postcard of Waikiki and it's the rightmost high-rise building). [smiley=palmtree.gif] There is a pipeline between Sans Souci and the San Francisco Bay area.  Many, if not most, of the owners there come from here.  Uncanny.  Anyway, the VERY short of the story, a very wealthy couple offered up a house-sitting situation.  It was, vis-a-vis our financial picture, my becoming a full-time student again, a baby on the way, no network of family and friends to lean on in the place we were headed, serious concerns about the logistics of health insurance (not the least of which were the coverage of preexisting conditions, I.E. the PREGNANCY, and the usual INaffordability of adding family members to student health insurance plans), etc., etc., the precise blessing we needed to level off the mountain we were looking at having to climb.  So, here we are at about 10:00 p.m. the night of Sunday, July 27th, within less than 15 hours of our departure, [smiley=ontheclock.gif] still sweating our asses off in the throws of, at that moment, carpet cleaning, and only about three to five days prior to our scheduled initial arrival in the Bay area (after picking up our car and coming up the coast from L.A.) and expecting to be laying our weary heads down in the place we were to house-sit... when the phone rings... [smiley=phone.gif] ... [smiley=reaper.gif]

It's the people who have bestowed this "blessing" on us...  The lady, PLAYING dumb, in a "clueless" manner asks me to "refresh" her memory as to what our plans are.  Mind you, now, I, at her request, weeks prior typed up our itinerary including all of our contact numbers and such and gave it to her.  I, in any event, go on to "refresh" her memory.  She goes on to tell me that her neighbor who was going to give us the keys to the house (and our mail which we had forwarded) was actually going to be away on a vacation and, bottom line, not available to facilitate our entrance into the home.  I eventually asked her if she could give us her copies of the keys in the morning and we could go and make copies (as if we really had the time to do that crap).  She replied with some run-around answer that communicated loud-and-clear [smiley=loudnclear.gif] more so that she didn't want us staying there than anything intelligible and understandable.  They did leave us with some hope that it might still work out after we return to California from New Jersey to stay for good (or for better or worse, so to speak, in light of the bind they put us in), and we, out of desperation, held on to that hope.  Mind you, though, we'd adjusted our plans based on this offer...  That said, ours was just too fragile of a situation to just "sit back and see what happens"...  So, let the scrambling and the stress begin [smiley=gonecrazy.gif] (and, of course, developments here were just adding to my agony, of course unwittingly, but that just goes to show you the general superficiality of cyber relationships). [smiley=frustrated.gif] In the meantime, this bitch is telling me how my pregnant wife needs to take it as easy as possible and have as little stress as possible. [smiley=gimmeabreak.gif] Yea, this news, a half day from our departure is, then, obviously what the doctor ordered.  I digress...  It's unbelievable the havoc people who don't (self-)reflect [smiley=uponreview.gif] on their actions and words wreak.

Now, the good, our two-day trip [smiley=cruisin.gif] up the California coast was, from Malibu to Big Sur to Monterey and everything in between, SPEC-TACULAR (and this is saying A LOT considering whence we were coming) [smiley=yes.gif] and, in terms of our personal circumstances, the President of the Board of Sans Souci and Bay area resident, did step up and ease our pain a bit.  But, again, the bigger picture damage had already been done.  In any case, we headed on to New Jersey to mom's.  The visit hardly ended up being a vacation.  Three years away, and there was just tons of stuff my mom needed me to take care of.  My mom lives on the Jersey shore.  We had ONE beach day, the day before our departure. [smiley=no.gif] We did shelter my mom from the "situation" until right at the end of our stay when, after a phone call to the bitch, [smiley=witch.gif] it became clear that we didn't have a place to stay.

So, stuff had to unexpectedly be tossed into storage, and we lived out of a hotel through the first three weeks of school, hemorrhaging cash and me getting little to no schoolwork done.  This was a mess that our original, do-it-ourselves plans for matriculation to California had us avoiding.  We did get "lucky" [smiley=shamrock.gif] doing things on our own.  We ended up with a great affordable, conveniently-located place in a decent neighborhood and with a landlord who really is a good person.  For those who are familiar with the area, we are in the south-east Bay in Hayward, not all too far from the Oakland Coliseum, VERY strange and scary [smiley=yikes.gif] for a Donkos fan. [smiley=broncofan.gif] We were really just settling in about two weeks ago, the seventh week of the semester, just in time for my mother-in-law to arrive from Korea and baby Monica's arrival here, at this point, within about the next two weeks.

Well, I want to keep this post essentially personal, so that'll be it for here, I think, at least for now.  I'm going to put stuff regarding [smiley=RIF.gif] CIIS [smiley=howtoput.gif] on the "Steegie-san" thread, where I think it fits better,... in any event.  Along those lines, I may even get around sometime to posting some pics of the Stegeman family adventures of late on the "Photo Album" thread.  We'll see... [smiley=threed.gif] So, that'll do it for here!  It's been a looooong haul, a bit of a rocky road, but it looks like we've made it, and soon Monica joins us on this roller coaster we call a life.

Just spoke with Steve and Monica is here! Mom, Monica and Steve are all doing well. Steve did mention that stats may be a little late this week due to Monica's arrival. HOWEVER, because there was some down time in the labor process, Steve was able to score his game against Warner.

Steg says he has been hearing cries ever since Monica's birth. The funny thing is the cries he hears seem to be coming from the east coast...

That would be correct.  I definitely lost!  The only personal consolation is I had the opportunity to play Joe and go 1 and 1 on the week.

Guys, you may have noticed the restoration of the "Co-commissioner Services" link on "the Gridiron"!  I was prompted to do this because, even though I had taken the link down back during the beginning of the time of troubles here this year, someone, somehow found the page, which I had left up, and I actually got an order! [smiley=booya.gif] $5...  I'm, alas, competing with your seven-year-old daughter's lemonade stand!
[smiley=LMFAO.gif] ... ;D ... :) ... [smiley=thinking.gif] ... [smiley=silence.gif] ... :-/ ... :-[ ... :'( ... [smiley=bawling.gif]
But, really, what these guys got in return was worth WAY MORE than the $5 they paid.  I put in almost two hours on it. [smiley=thinking.gif] ... [smiley=howtoput.gif] To bad I'm not given the opportunity to show that to more people more often.  Just gotta keep pluggin' [smiley=plug.gif] away...  But, I digress...  In a couple days I'm gonna ask the dude if he'd be cool with my using that response as a sample to put on the "Co-commissioner Services" page.  If he does, I'll point you guys in that direction so yous can check it out.  Anyway, kind of neat!

It's official...  I hate Major League Baseball.  Around the Horn started today's show off, like every other sports talk show I'm sure, with the news about Sabathia's going to the Yankees for some ungodly figure, which caused me to promptly shut it off.  The economics of baseball is absolutely greed-driven and disgusting.  But, whatever.  Idiots are free to be idiotic in America where constructive criticism is (labeled) politically incorrect because we all, as a country, have to coddle each other's insecurities rather than help facilitate each other's self-improvement.  We're regressing back into the womb of the huddle masses.  Moral exemplarity is trumped by the "need" for false modesty in an insecure, even self-loathing society.  Most cannot see the inherent problem or contradiciton of being a stanch supporter of both privacy rights and social welfare policy (though it's the fairly explicit platform of one political "persuasion").  Our excessive freedom "to" without responsibility has led us down the path where selfishness is so engrained in our psyche that we don't even know what it really means anymore and the goal is the lowest common denominator.  But, I digress...  What does MLB economics ultimately mean to me (besides its symptomatic connection to watching my and, moreover, our children's country go to ruins... in their times)?  If the NFL were to ever go in the direction of MLB, "I" would be hard-pressed to hang on. [smiley=hanginin.gif] The only possible saving grace in such a case would be the aspect of the hobby, as I see and value it, that allows you to maintain a handful of fairly substantive friendships (over long distances), have a few friends that were once very close remain fairly integral in your life and not just fade away into the realm of Christmas card acquaintanceship... and beyond, into ultimate oblivion.  The structure of MLB economics couldn't be a bigger turnoff to a chap like me. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] But, hey, if the lemmings are still in queue,... it's all good in America, right?  Shut up (the irony); get back in line; sports is supposed to be the distraction from "this stuff"...  The problem, sports, especially as manifest by MLB, has become part of the "this stuff". :-/

TAMPA, Fla. - NFL player Marquis Cooper's wife is seeking a presumptive death certificate a week after the Coast Guard called off its search for the missing boater and two friends.

My wife and I saw Marquis's wife in a local news interview like the day that or the day after this tragedy went down.  It was like she was giggling.  She seemed to have an anticipatory air about her.  Whatever the case, we both definitely thought she was behaving inappropriately, and it wasn't just out of being "in shock".  It had more of a "15 minutes of fame" feel to it. Changing gears here...  This f'd up circumstance... from "The REAL Feed":

Police officer on leave for delaying Moats as relative died (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/texans/2009-03-26-moats-dispute_N.htm?csp=34)
USA TODAY: NFL (26.03.2009 15:28)
A police officer who pulled over Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats refused to listen to the NFL player's pleas that he was ...

... As well he should be...  I finally saw the video footage on this.  The officer was way out of line.  Frankly speaking, out here in the Oakland area we are, as most of you probably know, dealing with a terrible tragedy with the killings of these four upstanding officers.  But, it is the kind of police behavior this officer exhibited that prompts "black power" "protest" rallies like the disgusting one we had here the other day praising this scumbag Lovelle Mixon, who killed these four officers, and demonizing, not just the police in general, but these four officers specifically.  Are you kidding me?  In addition, further corroborating the insanity (insane liberalism) of the Bay area, while mentioning people grieving at the memorials set up for the four officers, the local news makes it a point to actually dignify a memorial set up for Mixon, pointing out that it too today was being visited by mourners.  Don't they realize that even mentioning this other memorial is a total insult to the families of the officers we were honoring today?  Now, don't get me wrong.  I understand that this is all cyclical.  But, what this officer did here really was unnecessary.  He had options.  He could have gone about this way differently, way more humanely, way more thoughtfully.  I feel bad for Moats and his wife.  ...  Oh, and just for the record, I am a full-blooded white guy.

Bungling officer [smiley=policeman.gif] in Moats case resigns... according to "The REAL Feed":

Dallas police officer who stopped Texans RB Moats submits resignation (http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80f8d125&template=without-video&confirm=true)
NFL.com (01.04.2009 14:37)
The police officer who pulled out his gun and threatened an NFL player with jail instead of allowing him inside a hospital where his mother-in-law was dying resigned Wednesday.

I think the guy went too far.  Actually, it's kind of the cowardly thing to do.  The much better, bigger move would have been to just meet with the Moatses and give them an in-person apology.  Yet again, the propensity in America (on the part of otherwise probably good people, mind you) not to "face", "confront" your misdeeds prevails... :-/ My point with the paranthetical there is to emphasize that this ethical lowering of the bar applies to the good folks.  We're not even taking into account the bad guys! This is in specific connection with the last post made...  Currently atop "The REAL Feed":

John Elway says's he's OK with son Jack Elway's decision to quit football (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4168490&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines)
ESPN: NFL (15.05.2009 10:10)
Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway says he understands his son Jack's decision to quit football, he said Thursday.

I totally agree with the sentiments of the ESPN members who posted responses to this piece (at least up until now), so I don't feel the need to reiterate.  All I would like to add, on a different front, is that the Griese connection is cool to see.  You know we all too often just look at these guys as "objects" in our fantasy universe when the fact is they are human beings, persons.  Brian Griese of the Denver Broncos seems like a faint memory (I personally, as a Broncos fan, have always held fond memories of him; you can ask Drew Rosenhaus here on "the Gridiron" a.k.a. Markie H.).  One, from afar, truly disconnected, looking at these guys as objects populating his or her NFL universe, might be inclined to think that there is no ("real") connection (anymore) between John Elway and Brian, especially after so many years.  That would be wrong as this article goes to show.  (I'm at the moment working on my last paper for CIIS. [smiley=howtoput.gif] At the moment, I've got Sartre on the brain. [smiley=RIF.gif] The essay is on subjectivity and objectivity, the human subject versus the human object, and, aside from the aforementioned, includes the usual suspects:  Wojtyla, Gyatso, Heidegger, Descartes, Confucius and so on.  Being reminded of that which is higher-minded is always a good thing! [smiley=clap.gif] Congratulations!  A little less of this... [smiley=pudwhacker.gif] (boy, that smiley is gettin' a rather rare workout here today) A little more of this... [smiley=bendover.gif] Well, I suppose there is a little yes and no to that,... but I digress... ;) You know... I have sent you a couple e-mails over the last couple years, all to that Hoseo e-mail address of yours that I had.  They all seemed to go through (no returns),... but are you still there?  Also, since it was such a neat thing that stuck in my head that you had done/were involved in, have you made any more trips over these years to North Korea?  Inquiring half-a-brains ;D want to know...

All in all we have WAY MORE to ketchup on ([smiley=pudwhacker.gif]... okay, that was just egregious) :D than can be via this medium.  As for the old Stegger, [smiley=peedog.gif] for the sake of expediency and yet relative depth, since I live my life out on this web site, I am going to guide you to a couple areas here on "the Gridiron" where you can catch yourself up ([smiley=pudwhacker.gif]... oh, I just caught myself up... [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif]) on the goings on of the Steggeroni...  I will say, though, that Gino is doing wonderfully,... but I want to let, at least the next link, "speak" for itself...  For the moment, I want to... :-X You'll see why...

First, I am going to say here:  http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1185832268;start=50.  Where here will be obvious as you scroll down.  There are also some links in my messages there that will keep you going...

Then, for a more detailed update, you can try here, starting with my post on December 10, 2008 but even more so, for the latest Steggie info, starting from my post of March 23, 2009:  http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1037120039;start=75.  That whole thread, in fact, by and large regards the roller coaster ride of my academic pursuits and, according, movements.

Now, back to you, I WANT PICS!!!  And, of course, THE STORY!  You can relate all this to me by various methods:  popping me an e-mail (I will now private-message you an e-mail address for me), or private-message me here by simply replying to my private message to you or clicking on my user name "StegRock" and then on the next page choosing to send me a private message, or, what the hell, right here on this thread (however, for the latter two options, you have to have a way to upload pics to the net that can then be fetched and displayed here), or some hybrid thereof.  Of course, if you have some kind of on-line presence yourself (Facebook?), guide me there.  [Side note, Dave, if you happen to care, you do already have an old account here on "the Gridiron" for which I can easily get the password for you.  Let me know.  It's not important, though,... unless... you'd like to roll with Chili, me and some other guys in the CBFL (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=54;action=display;num=1240204388) (EXTREMELY low-maintenance deal)...  Just throwin' it out there, old friend!]

Anyway, ALL that said, even after that, I think we still need to... [smiley=phone.gif] Any way we can get on that?  I'm in a decent lull here for another three or so weeks.  I'll include my phone number in the private message I'm going to send you right after posting this.

Well, again, it was FANTASTIC hearing from you, Dave!  I do hope you are well and cannot wait to reestablish contact with you.

Way to go, kiddo!!! [smiley=graduate.gif] Way to persevere!!!  Congratulations!!!

By the way, love that quote in your sig...

[offtopic]I don't want to turn this post into something it's not meant to be, but, in VERY short, I witnessed a bunch of dudes let the moment define them instead of defining the moment around this time last year here on "the Gridiron". :-/[/offtopic]

Anyway, along the lines of your sig quote and your recent success,... always remember that money and material things will come and go, but time only goes; money and material things can be taken away from you, but your education and your mind no person can take away. [smiley=zenmaster.gif]

How about Michael Jackson, guys and gals?  What a sad, sad epitaph!  I don't think the guy ever did anything whack with kids, save for the difference in age, i.e., I don't believe he never molested a kid.  I think he literally was trying to have the sleepovers he missed out on as a kid.  Weird,... for sure!  Evil weird,... NO WAY!  Pathetic weird,... yes...  Ironically, though, I think it was his childlike effervescence that caused him to be so beloved throughout the world.  I mean... think of his on-stage, public persona as compared to say, Madonna's (filthy one).  Anyway, what a talent!

What a mortal week it has been...  We all know all too well at this point about Michael Jackson.  But, it started with Ed McMahon, who, of the group, fortunately got to live a long life.  Then, it was Farrah Fawcett, a beauty who left a goldmine to avoid selling out and being typecast.  Then, Michael!  Now, today it was Billy Mays, (some may think) a "mere" commercial-infomercial guy, true, but one that was so sincere and, thus, lovable that he had worked his way up to ESPN commercials and was given a TV show, "Pitchmen", that revolved around his beloved profession, at which, let's face it (and this is the theme here), he was, like McMahon was in his role as a sidekick and even Fawcett in her short time on "Charlie's Angels", if you will, "Michael Jackson" great.  Jackson was surely in a league of his own with respect to his life's calling, but these were all people who, like him, did what they did in their own unique, creative way and were able to accomplish greatness in what they did.  I know Billy Mays's pitches made for a lot of laughter and joy for the Steggies:  "It'll make your whites, whiter.  It'll make your brights, brighter," took on a variety of humorous forms in the Stegeman household(s). [smiley=laugh.gif] In any event, all the best to them all in the next level of existence. [smiley=wavinbye.gif] Each of them surely rode this plane of existence in first-class. [smiley=yes.gif]

First off, Lambert, [smiley=welcome.gif] aboard!  I hope you find your time on "the Gridiron" meaningful and enjoyable.

As to your question, you must know that you've come post the 2008 partial deconstruction of the site.  There were many scalebacks, including that to which your question refers, namely the CBFL Mock Draft & Rankings.  That said, a few diehard Gridironers stepped up and it has been one of the few things restored here on "the Gridiron" in our efforts to take baby steps toward an eventual comeback in years to come.  In any event, here's where the goods are:

I remember having this discussion all the way back in 2002 with a pal of mine back in Korea...  He was contending that the days of the "pocket quarterback" were a thing of the past.  The wave of the future in the form of running quarterbacks had arrived.  I disagreed, in fact, at the time, in stark contrast, touting my support for the likes of Brad Johnson (who,... eh-hem,... won a Super Bowl).  Well, here we are almost ten years later (mind you, "the Gridiron" itself was born in late summer 2002 from my desk in Andong, South Korea), and here is the rhetoric from "The REAL Feed":

Pasquarelli's Friday Tip Sheet: QBs as runners hasn't taken off (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/14797591/pasquarelli-friday-tip-sheet/rss)

Don't want to fail to mention how happy I am for Dirk Nowitski, Jason Kidd, Shaun Marion, Jason Terry and the rest of Dallas's Mavericks on their NBA Championship.  I have had my reservations about Mark Cuban, but what a classy move letting the former long-time old-guy owner receive the trophy and letting the spotlight shine on others.  And, what a series!  Every game was fantastic!  I have not been this riveted to an NBA Championship series since the Celtics last won theirs, and even then I do not think I was quite this into it.  And, the victory came over the Heat...  What redemption!  And, for the Heat, a much-needed big hunk of humble pie!  As many of you know, I am a Celts fan, but for the moment I am a band-wagon Mavericks fan.  Way to go, Mavs!

I have been thinking about Arian Foster's now infamous critical tweet about fantasy footballers.  I think his point was simply that "you are sick" if you only care about his health and at present all-too-real injury like, truth be said, when we do the converse, that is to say, root for an injury to our fantasy opponents' players, which is something we should not do and honestly is rather sick.  These are real people, after all.  However, I think Foster misses a very important detail.  Such behavior is not unique to fantasy football.  Regular fans too, which he readily defends (not that he is totally against fantasy football, mind you), have opportunist attitudes about injuries to players on opposing teams.  Indeed, football players themselves try to hurt one another.  It is just part of the nature of the game.  Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt badly (I hope), but there is no denying the fact that an injury is a disadvantage.  Seeking to exploit the impact of injuries and hoping to capitalize on an injury is not a mindset that just came about with the advent of fantasy football.  Now, his follow-up decision to tweet the MRI of his injured hamstring to the world and, thus, the Texans' opponents was terribly ill-advised.

I understand why these players feel the way they do....but realistically, would most people even somewhat care about his injury if it were not for fantasy football?  Would people even know his name?   These players are missing the fact that fantasy owners greatly increase these players marketing ability.   To then get pissed at the same people who helped make them famous is crazy.

If it were not for fantasy football, I would be willing to be that probably 10% of the people would know who he is.

If it were not for a deep keeper FF league, I would not know who the 3rd string RBs and 2nd string QBs are.  I would not give a rats ass who Jamie Harper, Alex Green, Matt Flynn etc are.

I think I might have figured out why Stegeman enjoyed teaching in Korea so much:

Is it possible you might remember which one that was?  :)

I love coming back here and reading some of the good stuff posted on this board. Obviously Steg had to deal with a Sponge Bob like guy long before Sponge Bob existed. Pretty irritating to the master I'm sure. But, there is some really good shit here. Where else could you read;

Super Bowl XLVIII
[smiley=seahawk.gif] vs. [smiley=horsey.gif]

Well, here we go...  You never know if/when there will be a next time for your team in your lifetime...  You have got to savor them when they come, and I am trying to do just that... [smiley=broncofan.gif]

Should be a good one...  Old AFC West rivals in the Super Bowl in my home state!  Unbelievable!

My prediction: 27-24 Donkos!  'Tis the "Year of the Horse", after all! [smiley=bow.gif] [smiley=awwgee.gif]

I will add an original Super Bowl joke for yous...

What do you call the person who brings vegan chip dip to the Super Bowl party?
The dip shit who brought the shit dip!!! [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=LMFAO.gif] [smiley=sinister.gif] [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif]

GO BRONCOS!!!

Well, that's that for that...  I am happy for Seahawks fans, like my old, old Jersey-ike friend Gavin, a pre-GBRFLer who has been a DIE-HARD Seahawks fan for many, many years through thick and thin and was there at the game today with his college-age son!

All of that having been said, the Broncos, bless their hearts, and John Elway, [smiley=Elway.gif] who despite my love for him, have been involved in some of the WORST Super Bowls, especially in losses.  I mean, when they get beat, they get DESTROYED!  Ugh... [smiley=gimmeabreak.gif]

Seattle played a hell if a game and got all the bounces, and made some too. The Seattle DL dominated Denver's OL.

First team not on the east coast to win the NCAA Lacrosse National Championship!  Indeed, it is great that it is a school that is truly out west.  The former "westernmost" team to win it came from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  What a great distinction for DU athletics to have forever more!

Yea, that is a funny one for sure, huh?  Defying geography that egregiously... shows how badly they wanted DU in their conference. ;D

Fellas, more to this story than first reported. DU plays hockey in the WCHA league, whose members this year all represent the Final Four. This is the first time this has EVER happened in the NCAA. FIRST. Plus, two of the top four teams are from Colorado.

DU is the WCHA Champion. Therefore... well I won't say it but it's out there...

There are still two games to be played until the champion is crowned. However, it's nice to know that the WCHA owns the United States when it comes to hockey.
