Question for ya Steg?

Steg,
How happy are you with Hostica.com? I know you mentioned it before. I am sick of geocities pop up adds and shit! It seemed really cheap. $5 bucks a month I believe. How easy is it to upload to their server? Are there any catches? No pop ups, etc? I plan on switching over if it you think it is truly worth it! Thanks in advance for the input   (Steg=Zen of FF)!!

PA, for the plan which includes 30 MB's of disk space, it is $5 per month or $50 per year if you just pay it all up front, which is worth doing... you don't need no trial period!  If you only need like 5 MB's of space, that is just $1 per month!  I have both kinds of plans with them for different sites.  They are excellent, and I have used two other hosting companies!  There are absolutely NO catches!  Uploading is a cinch!  You might want to invest the $39 or whatever it is in getting the "CuteFTP" FTP program.  If you are familiar with WS_FTP, I would have to tell you that that FTP program does not work well with their system, well, depending on what you want to do.  Ultimately, frankly "speaking", it would be easier to go over all this talking rather than like this.  As such, I am right now going to send you a "Gridiron Private Message" (link is in the top right-hand corner of your screen) with my phone number.  Either give me a call anytime tonight sometime after 10:00 (I like the show Law & Order:  Criminal Intent ) and before midnight, if possible, or give me a time that you'd like to call, and I will even be willing to call you back or at least split the toll somehow OR pop me back an instant message with your phone number and give me times when I can call you.  Let's do it!  I'll give you all the lowdown, and we can at least start to put "a voice, a person, with the name", which, in and of itself, would be nice, right?

Hey, PA, here's a little more info...

First, forget about that second FTP program that I mentioned.  I can't even find where it can be downloaded for free anymore.

So, just go with CuteFTP!  It is the one you'd want to use anyway if/when you join Hostica.  With that in mind, I have gone and learned that you do in fact need your own FTP (meaning File Transfer Protocol, by the way) program.  So, assuming you can use your own one with geocities and if you want to spend some time familiarizing yourself with CuteFTP, here is where it can be downloaded:

http://www.globalscape.com/cuteftp/.

The first 30 days are free!

Finally, if/when you go to sign up for web hosting at Hostica.com, PLEASE somehow mention that you were "referred" to them by Steven Stegeman of FantasyFootballer.com, FFPlayers.com, and Internetstitute.com (the three web sites I have hosted there).  They don't have any kind of official referral program.  BUT, as you might be aware from the "Slight Technical Difficulties on 'the Gridiron'" thread on "the Sidelines", there are some bandwidth issues that may cause me to have to move "the Gridiron" elsewhere.  If you point out that I brought them so MORE business, it might facilitate their "working with me a little more vigorously" and perhaps giving me some kind of "server upgrade," if even possible; I am not even sure that it is.  Our beloved forum here, precisely for its "belovedness" by way of all the graphics, avatars, smilies, instant messages and other amenities and such that most FF forums do not have, is a little bit "heavy" for their servers, which are fine, though, for your average site and have "served" me and my GBRFL and CBFL sites outstandingly and will "serve" yours just the same.  Anyway, I just might have to spend a few more bucks and go to a hosting company that has more robust servers.  Whatever...  Anyway, thanks in advance for doing me that favor! I only hope that I have sufficiently helped you in return!

Steg,
In need of more advice! I'm over at hostica right now and I'm looking at the hosting packages.  The C-class ($1.00/month) and the E-class ($3.95/month) are what I'm looking at specifically.  My question is in regards to Disk Space, and Monthly Traffic. The C-Class is Disk SPace -10 and Monthly traffic 500 MB, and the E-class is 80 and 1000 MB. Plus after looking at all the other features and charges, I'm trying to figur out what is the best package for my site? And what will the average yearly cost be? You are the expert on this shit. I have been stuck on geocities for years. Basically, nothing will change with my site, I just want my own domain name, and no pop-up adds. Possibly everything will move a little quicker too? Anyway, I could use some help. I know I want either Class c or Class e. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks as always,

PA,

First of all, as an example, I have ALL of FantasyFootballer.com on their old "$5 Plan", which is somewhere between their two new ones that you are considering.  For the SBFFL site, their new "C-class" plan should be MORE THAN ENOUGH!  You can upgrade seamlessly later, anyway.  You NEED NONE of the extras to start out with.  There is just ONE I could see your wanting at the outset.  That is extra POP3 e-mail accounts at a measly .10 a pop per month so each of your SBFFLers can have a league e-mail address of their own (I'll walk you through how they work if need be... in short, they work by way of an e-mail client like "Microsoft Outlook").  The only other three or four things I could perhaps see your eventually wanting (based on my subjective experience) is 1) FrontPage Extensions (that is if you use Microsoft FrontPage, if not, nix that one), 2) Perl/cgi-bin and/or 3) PHP if you want to get away from CBS Sportsline someday and make your site more full-featured and automated like the GBRFL's, and 4) Server Side Includes, again, if you start getting fancy.  That's it!  BUT, YOU DO NOT NEED ANY OF THEM RIGHT NOW!!!!!  All you need to do NOW is choose yourself a domain name; register that sucker for $9.95 (as long as it is .com, .net, .org or .info... others may be more expensive), and pay that lousy $12 for your YEAR of hosting!!!!!  That's it, brother!  Any more questions, feel free to ask!  Otherwise, off, my friend; do your good works!

Thanks again my friend!! slatebeltffl.com is soon to be!  . Probably just go with the basic to start. Let me get my feet wet before I jump in and drown! For the email accounts, it is $.10 per account, correct? What would be the use of this, if they already have their own personal email accounts? Sorry to keep bothering you with this shit, I'm trying to learn everything as quickly as I can!

Thanks in advance,

The extra accounts are .10 per extra account per month.  As for their purpose, just cool (for your members) to have a unique "...@SlateBellFFL.com" e-mail address, which could be especially used for fantasy-football related stuff perhaps, and not just the same ole' crap as everybody else, no?  That's all!

As for bothering me, it is NO bother at all.  Just, please, make sure your minions in the SBFFL are aware of everything.  This was the mistake that other FFLA commissioner made that resulted in very unfortunate events.  I am actually thinking/realizing that we (will) need to take a step back for a moment before pressing on and make sure that all of the FFLA commissioners/webmasters have informed (and gotten approval from) their league members.  As this thing grows and we need to "come together," the individual members of the respective leagues are going to have to be brought up to speed and into the fold a little bit, and I do NOT want to continue to meet with skepticism, no less outright meanness, and have to constantly explain myself.  I do NOT deserve that (nobody does, but I definitely do not)!  Follow...

I will keep the SBFFL informed of all happenings! To date, our league is now pretty prevolent here! DW, Zags, DUZERDOGZ, papkern, and myself are frequent visitors. Don't worry Steg, i'll handle my side of the bargain! Let me know what I can do. On a side note, I once I get everything squared away with my site, I'll get on the logo thing!

Easy !  I know you are excited, but things take time.  After the credit card approval, they have to set up your account.  Usually takes a half day, and it is Friday going into the weekend and based on when I saw you made your post on the SBFFL board indicating that you got the name and went about procuring the account, you probably won't be up and going until mid-day tomorrow or perhaps, but probably not, until Monday morning.  I know I went about some domain-name procuring and set up an account myself today in preparation of our June 14th (much-needed) upgrade here on "the Gridiron".  I got on it at about 10:00 a.m. (EST) and, after my credit card went through, the domain name was processed and the account set up around 2 p.m.-ish, roughly taking a half (business) day like I said above.  Anyway, you will be hittin' it soon enough, and you will get even more addicted now that you will really have a web site to call your own!  Point being, enjoy these last moments of solace. Your world is about to change! You have a lot of fun ahead of you, but also a big learning-curve to conquer.  Best of luck!  Know I am here if you need any help!

Holy Shit Steg!!! You were right. This is a whole new world! Anyway, I finally got into my control panel. I have no idea what I did, but I went to a file manager and uploaded all of my files. My site still does not work though! They said something about taking 24-72 hours until everything works. I did have to change my frames file to index.htm - I had to do that before too. I hope I am doing the correct things. I really want to get this figured out. Anyway, I can tell I will be relying on you heavily in the future. I apologize in advance for all of the times I will bug you! Remember, I'm a

Jeff,

GLAD to see you making this GREAT step... in the right direction.  Trust me you will enjoy your webmastering SO MUCH MORE and on SO MANY MORE LEVELS!  But, I have to be honest with you about something.  This is going to get tedious and the explanations are going to be, well, accordingly tedious.  I would REALLY prefer your just giving me a phone call when you have questions/need help rather than dealing with ALL the "tede" by e-mail or here.  It is just going to amount to WAY too much time wasted typing.  What could be explained thoroughly and precisely in a five minute talk could take upwards of 30 minutes to just basically convey, leaving inevitably another query to be asked.  I don't want to get into that... cycle.  BUT, I gave you my number and you are free to call me any day of the week between 10:00 a.m. and midnight.  If you need my number again, tell me and I will send it to you.  Be in touch!

Jeff,

Congratulations on getting the hell out of geoshities!  Your site looks awesome and better things are on the horizon for you and the SBFFL.  Having your own domain name definitely is a step up in the "internet world".  Great job!

Now, I do have a question, though.  Have you already taken the site down from geoshities?  I went to check and it appears that it is gone and the account closed!  Is that the case, because...?  Well, is that the case?

Thanks Steg! I truly am excited and look forward to future endeavors together. Let me know what I can do to help this site and Alliance progress. My geoshities account is still there. I just sent up a link to the new SBFFL site. It will probably close soon because of inactivity. I didn't want to close it completely, because some people may not know we have a new site!
