Trade question ... Any insight

Need some help at RB in a pretty standard performance league.  I currently have Duece, Bennett and Dunn.  Bennett and Dunn just are not getting it done.   I have the opportunity to get T Barber or Antowain Smith in a Trade for one of my WR's.   Which one would you prefer to have as a #2 RB and why.

We start 1 QB, 2RB, 3 WR/TE...

I'd have to give up one of R Gardner, P Burress, J Rice, D Mason, or Chris Chambers to get this RB.   Other owner gets his choice of my WR's...

I was a Warner owner so last week I traded away Lamar Smith and Joe Horn for Jerry Rice and Drew Bledsoe.

Any insights on the trade or on A Smith and T Barber...

First off, nice work on the Bledsoe-Rice deal!  That was one sweet trade for you.   Bledsoe should pay off nicely for you.  Horn was a tough loss, but Rice is not far behind fantasy-wise.

I just traded for Antowain Smith a week ago.  Got him and Ed McCaffrey for Trent Green (I had some wiggle room at QB and Green wasn't getting off my bench).  I still think Antowain will come around and start producing.  Tiki is also a nice option since the Giants have clearly given up on Dayne.  Bennett and Dunn are becoming the 2nd choice on their teams with Moe and TJ (respectively) getting the call more often.

Let's say the other owner takes Chambers (most likely choice).  You'll have a fairly weak WR corps and still only have Deuce to truly count on at RB.

If I was you, I would trade (Bennett or Dunn) AND (Burress or Mason) for Antowain Smith.  I'd go with Smith over Barber just because he appears to be more durable and the Patriots offense is more likely to build up a lead and then run out the clock with a RB than the Giants are.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately I'm not really in the position of power in this trade and would be happy to get either Tiki or Antowain.   Either of these will make a better second RB than Dunn or Bennett (for some reason, I thought he would make a great #2 RB this year   ).  I agree with your assessment that A Smith has the higher potential for upside.  So I will probably push that and see what happens.

I have already brought up the topic of sending a RB and a lesser WR to him in exchange for Smith/Tiki, but unfortunately he seems to be more interested in getting someone like Chambers or Rice.    He may be willing to do something like A Smith and Kevin Johnson for Dunn/Bennett and his pick of my receivers.

Again, thanks for the input.  I am 2-2-1 in this league (I happen to commission this one and have made the playoffs every year so far...).  I really feel like I need a boost to my team to have any shot of making the playoffs this year.

As a side note ... This is the first time I drafted a QB in the first round (fricken Warner   ).    I really didn't like the way my draft played out after that.   I think I convinced myself that I'll go back to the old standby of drafting RB's early, picking up a pretty stable core of WR's mid range,  and taking a couple of flier QB's around rounds 6-9...

If your scoring is normal perfomence scoring, Barber is money. He continually gets 100yards combined per game. I know he doesn't score many Tds, but 10 or 11 points each week with the potential of a lot more works for me.

Take Tiki.  Tiki's in for passing and rushing downs now.  Antowain gets shafted a lot with the passing game.  Either the Pats don't have anyone in the backfield or they have Redmond or Faulk running pass patterns.

Antowain had his one good year and now goes back to mediocrity.

With the news out of Minnesota that Bennett will be the featured back (Moe will stay the third down back).  Getting someone like Tiki or Antowain would really solidify what looked like horrendous options at RB#2 only a week ago.  Here's hoping Tice sticks with Bennett as the main back!!!

Frankly speaking, I would trade any one of those receivers, EXCEPT Rice, to get TIKI.  As was alluded to by Philly, to get the deal done I would go for a 2-for-1 deal, Burress or Mason, or even Chambers or Gardner if it is not a keeper league, and Dunn, not Bennett though, for Barber, but not Smith.  I ultimately agree with Razzak on Smith.  I think he has had his good run, but it is now coming to an end.  At any rate, you really do not have "one" right player to deal for Smith.  The player you would be giving up would be either too much or not enough.  As such, the one good deal for you regarding Antowain would be to get him for Burress and Dunn, but that's it.  Vis-a-vis Smith, Barber, given his receiving stats, is just week-in and week-out as paulinstl states.  I would focus my efforts on Barber if I were you... or you... were me...

As for the other deal, you made a great deal at the right time.

After talking with the other owner over lunch today, it sounds like we are going to work out a Dunn & Plaxico for Tiki deal.

Dunn and Plax for Tiki is a good deal for you....you have the depth at WR, and it looks like Dunn is getting fewer touches in Atlanta.
