Houston Texans - Week Seven Analysis

Well, the Texans are on the road this week facing a struggling Cleveland team this week in the Dawg Pound. The Texans' offense showed some signs of life this past week against the pitiful Bills defense, and I expect this trend to continue into Cleveland. The Texans are fired up and pissed off about letting last week's game slip away...they are a team on the rise while the Browns are a team in disarray with a QB that is completely lacking self-confidence and confidence of his fans. Overall, I expect a very productive day for the Texans offense, even though they are playing on the road. Quarterbacks David Carr had a very solid outing last week, making key decisions and being sacked about 50% less than in previous games. Carr also showed something that he hadn't in previous games...elusiveness. Carr scrambled for 50 yards last week and scored a rushing TD in the process. No, Carr is not John Elway, but you can expect the offensive coordinator to exploit this ability a little more in weeks to come, if only to prevent Carr from taking blindside hits in the backfield. Carr once again showed that his strength is the deep ball last week, and you can expect the Texans to take even more shots downfield this week against a decimated Browns secondary. It disturbs me that the short passing game is almost non-existent for the Texans, but the long passing game may open up some underneath routes this week. David Carr 250 yards passing, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 40 yards rushing, 0 TDs Runningbacks The two-headed monster reared its ugly head again against the Bills last week. Continuing to frustrate fantasy owners, Capers continues to be committed with going to the "hot hand" theory in the backfield. Most sites are predicting that Wells will have another breakout week this week, and Capers will finally give him the rock for good. I don't believe it. Capers has never been one to commit to something if his system is working as he expected. This makes the runningbacks hard to predict, but I would project that Wells (working off the adrenaline from last week) will be that hot hand this week. James Allen 20 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 10 yards receiving, 0 TDs Jonathan Wells 80 yards rushing, 1 TD; 10 yards receiving, 0 TDs Wide Receivers Jabar Gaffney FINALLY came out of his hole last week and started to show some signs of life. His TD catch in the first half really envigorated his play for the rest of the game...you could see it in the crispness of his routes and the burst he showed off the line. Bradford has permanently established himself as Carr's go-to guy, and you can expect that he will once again see most of the looks this week. The Texans threw to Jermaine Lewis twice at the end of the game in a game-winning situation, and both times he didn't come up with the catch. I wouldn't expect them to make the same mistake this week. Corey Bradford - 5 receptions, 110 yards, 1 TD Jabar Gaffney - 4 receptions, 90 yards, 1 TD Jermaine Lewis - 1 reception, 10 yards Brian Miller (TE) - 3 receptions, 30 yards Overall, I expect that the Texans WILL defy the odds and will get their second win of the season in a tough Dawg Pound... Texans 27, Cleveland 13

| Well, obviously it is time for me to nut up and say that the Texans did worse than I expected and the Browns did better. The Texans, IMO, actually outplayed the Brownies in this game, but some costly mistakes (a fumble by Jermaine Lewis on the Texans' 10 yard line and a 97 yard kickoff return by Andre Davis) nuked the Texans' chance to pull this one out. At least I came close on the fantasy predictions... David Carr 267 yards passing, 1 TDs, 0 INT, 9 yards rushing, 0 TDs Well, the Texans had two passing touchdowns...unfortunately Gaffney threw for one of those. I came close to Carr's passing yardage, but overestimated the rushing yards by 30 yards. The Browns seemed intent on stopping Carr's scrambling ability this week...and to their credit they nabbed him outside of the pocket many times this week, for a total of NINE sacks. Overall, a good week for Carr and you expect this sort of production (against poor defenses) here on out. James Allen 61 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 38 yards receiving, 0 TDs Jonathan Wells 23 yards rushing, 0 TD; 11 yards receiving, 0 TDs Well, I told you guys that it was hard to predict which rusher would have the hot hand this week, and once again I nail the total rushing and receiving yards but predict the wrong RB to get off. Allen had a couple of long runs/receptions, but Capers DID give the ball more times to Wells this week. I'm not sure if that a sign of things to come...I will monitor the Houston media to see if Capers is starting to lean the rookie's way. Corey Bradford - 2 receptions, 76 yards, 2 TD Jabar Gaffney - 4 receptions, 47 yards, 0 TD, 39 yards passing, 1 TD Brian Miller (TE) - 6 receptions, 78 yards Well, again I was pretty close in the WR projections, other than Miller getting 40 yards more than I expected. Bradford is becoming a monster out there on the field, and is starting to approach second tier caliber WR's (like Booker) in stats and consistency. I overestimated his yards, but he made up for that in nabbing two TD's instead of one. I also predicted a TD for Gaffney...but he THREW for that TD instead of catching one! HA! Overall, as I said the Texans shot themselves in the foot this week. It was a bold prediction, and the Texans SHOULD have won based on their performance. Oh well, I was wrong... Browns 34, Texans 17
