Unless you've been living under a stump in the middle of the woods in Manitoba, you know that the Birds must now trudge through the rest of the regular season without their fearless leader, Donovan McNabb. Even worse, the Eagles face what is realistically their biggest challenge of the season in the San Francisco Forty-Niners. The Eagles are coming off an emotional win against the Cardinals. Emotional because they played well, but bittersweet in light of the event that occurred on the third play of the game. The Eagles bring the #2 rushing attack in the league into the game and will need it. They have the 4th ranked offense and 3rd ranked defense in the league. The Niners, however, are coming off an overtime loss to the San Diego Chargers. The Niners own the 9th best offense in the NFL and are an average 14th in total defense. The numbers seem to favor the Eagles. There are a few other intangibles at play here. Under Andy Reid, the Eagles are 7-0 in Prime Time games, including a 3-0 record on MNF. This is also a revenge game for the Eagles as they lost a 13-3 game last year when they squandered MANY scoring chances. However, McNabb was involved in everything listed above, so throw it ALL out the window. Look for the Eagles to attempt to control the time of possession by running the ball and using short passes to Staley and Lewis. There aren't many Eagles players you'll want to start this week. Consider Staley and Akers your best bets. PREDICTIONS: Detmer - 195 PaY, 20 RuY, 1 TD, 2 INT {11} Staley - 80 RuY, 50 ReY, 1 TD {19} Levens - 30 RuY, 10 ReY {4} Thrash - 30 ReY {3} Pinkston - 45 ReY {4} Freeman - 15 ReY {1} Lewis - 25 ReY {2} Akers - 1-1 XP, 3-3 FGs {10} Defense - 20 PA, 320 YA, 2 Sacks, 1 FF *{Fantasy points based on standard performance league scoring.} FINAL SCORE:

| similar story, but jump ahead a few years, you're at Arrowhead and Derrick Thomas has just taken down Steve Young in the endzone for a safety! Ended up with a framed 8 x 10 of it and the look of pain on Youngs face is awsome! {Just retelling this gets the juices flowin.} Brutality within the rules is what has made the NFL what it is. I have no problem deriveing pleasure from anothers' pain when the particpants are paid well for excatly that risk. Ronnie Lott is one of, if not the best pure hitter I've ever witnesssed! Ain't even anybody close enough to him to deserve changing the IS to WAS. Point was suppose'd to be he didn't give a rat ass about hurtin anyone. But he did it within the rules and with excellent techniuqe. nostalgic rant over

| Half a franchise is better than nothing, right? And, hey, if you can hold, pun intended, Chad Lewis in check as well as you did Gonzalez... Seriously, though, I guess I didn't realise your San Fran connection. Belated props on your win against us, and MAJOR kudos for punkin the Raiders.

| Some pretty good defenses haven't been able to shut down the Eagles run this year. But that was also with McNabb in the backfield. I think the Eagles will still get some decent yardage on the ground. It's the passing game that has me worried most. Plummer has been great, but Webster has been shaky the few times I've seen him. I imagine Plummer will be covering Thrash and Webster will cover Pinkston. Pinkston is tall and a good leaper, so he may have that advantage over Webster. Freeman will catch a few, but the guy has lost a few steps and Rumph should be able to cover him up well.

Here's how it happened. Right before Detmer went down with the injury, ABC showed a graphic illustrating where Detmer was throwing and how successful he was. You may have noticed that about 60-70 percent of the throws were to the left. In the West Coast offense, the QB's progression is from left to right, so Detmer was throwing to his first option almost all the time. That's why he was sacked only once (first play of the game when he slipped). Detmer was able to get rid of the ball quickly. There was another big key in the game. You may have heard Madden mention that the Eagles were picking on rookie DB Mike Rumph. Madden then stated a few times that the Eagles should run a 3-wide set all the time to continue to isolate Rumph. That's where Madden was wrong. (Is that blasphemous to say? ) The Eagles continued to show running formations throughout the game. The Niners expected a heavy dose of Staley/Levens/Westbrook throughout the game and would slide the safeties up to the line of scrimmage. The Eagles would then throw out of those formations, passing the ball over the drawn-in safeties. That's why the reverse worked early in the game as well. The safeties bought the inside fake and were left wide-open for the reverse. The Eagles had a masterful game-plan last night. Detmer showed he is a better West Coast QB than McNabb. (More blaspheme? ) And the Eagles receivers showed more battle toughness than the Niners DBs. The Niners came into the game playing like they had already won the game. They never recovered. |
