EAGLES Week 17 Analysis

The Eagles travel to Exit 16W on the New Jersey Turnpike to take on their arch-enemy New York Giants. In their previous matchup, Donovan McNabb and Duce Staley ran wild on the G-Men in a 17-3 MNF victory. In recent meetings, McNabb has proven to be a Giant-killer. The question begs, can it be done with Feeley (or Freeley as Fassel keeps referring to him)? The game has quite a bit riding on it. What was once expected to be a meaningless game is now crucial the the NFC playoff picture. If the Giants win, they miraculously make the playoffs. If they lose, they need the Saints to lose to the Panthers as well. If the Eagles win, they have home field throughout the playoffs. If the Eagles lose, they need a Packer loss to the Jets to maintain home field. QB: This will prove to be the determining factor in the game. Can Feeley keep from throwing the INT that bites the Eagles in the hindquarters? Feeley - 230 PaY, 10 RuY, 1 TD, 2 INT {12} RB: Duce Staley was able to find the holes (gaping ones) in the first matchup. Duce should be able to rise to the occasion again. Staley - 90 RuY, 40 ReY, 1 TD {19} Levens - 20 RuY, 20 ReY {4} Westbrook - 25 RuY {2} WR: This is where it begins to get a bit sticky. In the first game, Thrash was the difference-maker. Thrash, however, has not fared well since McNabb's exit. Pinkston has more than picked up Thrash's slack in those games. But now Pinkston is battling a turf toe injury and is questionable for Saturday's game. If Pinky can't go, look for Freeman and Freddie Mitchell to get some more looks. Pinkston (If he plays) - 60 ReY {6} Thrash - 20 ReY, 20 RuY {4} Freeman - 75 ReY {7} Mitchell (If Pinky is out) - 35 ReY {3} TE: Look for Chad Lewis to assume the role of blocker in the game. He may get a ball or two, but I wouldn't expect much. Lewis - 20 ReY {2} K: He takes advantage of every opportunity he gets. Akers - 1 XP, 3-3 FG {10} Def: Can the Eagles D slow down the Giants resurgent offense? Yes. But I wouldn't expect a huge fantasy game for the Eagles. 16 PA, 300 YA, 3 Sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF *{Fantasy points are based on standard performance league scoring for those who might still care.} And that brings us to the... FINAL SCORE: Eagles 16 Giants 16 I honestly have no idea who will win this game. I would expect it to be a hard-fought, ugly, penalty-ridden, defense-dominated, (ergo typical) Eagles-Giants game. It would not surprise me at all to see the game end in a tie.

I don't know about this, and here are my reasons: 1. The Giants have not allowed a rusher more than 70 yards in the last six weeks. 2. No one has rushed for more than 63 yards vs. the Giants at home this year. 3. The G-men have allowed only 4 people to rush for more than 90 yards all year. Granted, 2 were Staley and McNabb in the same game (126 and 107 respectively), the others were Marcel Shipp (92) and Michael Bennett (167). 4. Although the front seven are banged up, they are playing well right now and are fighting for thier playoff lives. 5. No McNabb. The Giants will coming for Feeley. Pressure will be on him all day long. I think they will key on stopping the run first to put more pressure on Jay to beat them. Should be a great game. on Dec 26th, 2002, 2:53pm, Philly wrote: RB: Duce Staley was able to find the holes (gaping ones) in the first matchup. Duce should be able to rise to the occasion again. No one has rushed for more than 63 yards vs. the Giants at home this year. -That doesn't explain their weak 4-3 record at home though... 3. The G-men have allowed only 4 people to rush for more than 90 yards all year. Granted, 2 were Staley and McNabb in the same game (126 and 107 respectively), the others were Marcel Shipp (92) and Michael Bennett (167). -The Eagles have only played the Giants once this year and had 2 players go over 100 yards...Sounds good to me. 4. Although the front seven are banged up, they are playing well right now and are fighting for thier playoff lives. Eagles offensive line are as healthy as they have been all year and are fighting for home field throughout the playoffs. 5. No McNabb. The Giants will coming for Feeley. Pressure will be on him all day long. I think they will key on stopping the run first to put more pressure on Jay to beat them. Which is it? Are they coming for Feeley or are they keying on the run? The Eagles frequently throw on 1st down and run on obvious passing downs. And, unlike McNabb, Feeley will often throw to his first read. McNabb would go through all of his reads and end up having to run when the blocking broke down. Feeley will get rid of the ball much more quickly than McNabb did, so that will help to neutralize that pass rush a bit. Should be a great game. If you like smash-mouth, defensive battles, I agree. It will be a brawl. |
| And I really don't know who will win. I agree that there may be a bit more of a sense of urgency on the part of the Giants, but I think the Eagles are still the better football team. The prediction of a tie was a bit of a joke but I could make a coherent argument for either team.

Yeah, I know the Giants were 4-3 at home, but here were the leading rushers for each home game: week 1, San Francisco (loss) Hearst 40 yards week 3, Seattle (win) Alexander 37 yards week 7, Atlanta (loss) Duckett 36 yards week 9 Jacksonville (win) Brunell 63 yards week 11 Washington (win) Davis 59 yards week 13 Tennessee (loss) George 64 yards week 15 Dallas (win) Hambrick 42 yards The three losses at home were to better teams, at the time. I think the Giants can beat the Niners and the Falcons if they were to play this week. The Eagles are tougher than both of those teams and probably the Titans as well, but they are the hottet team in the NFL right now. This game is a toss up... And Philly, check you instant messages!
