Wow, I think he's actually doing the smart thing. He could become something special especially getting treatment from the best physicians of the world, in the NFL. Someone who takes this kid 3rd-5th rounds, may wind up with a hidden treasure, so to speak.

Interesting move on his part.  This kid has all the skills, it is going to be interesting who takes a chance on him. Like KJ76 said, 3-5 round, could be a steal in a few years!!  
 
I was thinking maybe Tampa, or Indy, or maybe Houston.

I can understand why he would want to "strike while the iron is hot", but I think it would have been better to stay in school and improve his draft position. He obviously believes that he will make a full recovery, or he would have taken the 2.5 million. Let's assume he makes a full recovery... there's no reason why he wouldn't get his starting job back at Miami some time in the next 2 years. He could come back, prove that he still has it and go in the first round. If he never recovers, he won't make it in the NFL anyway. I'm sure it was a tough decision and I wish him luck.

He did not turn down the 2.5 million.....thats  media propaganda from his agent......the contract will pay him on January 3, 2004 if he is unable to return to football. Thats how the contract was written...If he was injured and was unable to continue playing football, he would be payed 1 year from the date of injury.

Who's to say that McGahee won't be able to perform at the ability he was at in 2-3 years? People said Robert Edwards of the Miami Dolphins was never to walk again. His first game back in over 3-4(?) years, he scores 2 TDs. Edgerrin James, if I'm not mistaken, suffered the same injury that McGahee did. It was obvious that the injury affected him this year, but, he outperformed some starting RBs who were as healthy as a horse.  
 
In all this, he makes a wise decision of coming to the NFL this year. Three main reasons as to why.
 
1)He risks re-injuring himself in college and completely ruining his chances in the NFL. If he is not fully recovered from the injury, a team can put him on IR for the year, give him the rest, and work him out the next year.  
 
2)He broke a ton of records at Miami, this year. He's coming off a big year. His stock has fallen greatly due to the injury, but, it's still higher then others because of what he accomplished this year. Who's to say that his stock won't get lowered even more if he stays in college. Like I think someone said, I doubt he'd be the starter next year.
 
3) He will probably be taken in the 3rd-5th round, thus, avoiding teams like the Bengals, and maybe going to a good team like the Patriots, Buccaneers, etc.

Thanks for the article. I guess from a financial view point, it's best that he enters the draft and signs a contract. That way if he's re-injured within the first 4 games, he'll have the option to collect the 2.5 million and will still get paid for the contract he signs in the NFL. Right?
