Cleveland QB Sitch!

[ 09FEB03 Cleveland Plain Dealer : The Browns quietly have added a veteran QB to their roster, further indication that they are exploring their options at the position.....

As the Tim Couch-vs.-Kelly Holcomb starting debate intensifies, the Browns may be exploring the feasibility of moving one in a trade. If so, they would need a strong alternative to Josh Booty to compete for the backup role.

see the direct link:

I personally think the Browns should trade Holcomb as soon as possible.  Not only do they not need a QB contraversy, but his value is high right now.  Trade 'em while he is hot!!

Dirk, GREAT get!

I have to admit I kind of like Holcomb more than Couch, believe it or not.  That having been said, ALL things equal, I am sure Holcomb's value on the market is greater than Couch's at this point in time, at least as far as each's commensurate valuation is concerned, i.e., Holcomb was a noboby who is now a somebody perceived to have upswing; whereas, Couch basically remains a somebody with hope.

An aside worthy of note, I really like the potential QB Pat Barnes brings to the table.  I liked him coming out of college and agree with the assertions made in the article you cite.

And then there is this from KFFL:

Bears | Interested In Couch Trade? - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
6:52 PT: The Chicago Tribune reports the Chicago Bears might be interested in trading for Cleveland Browns QB Tim Couch. However, the Bears wouldn;t be expected to give up much more than a mid-round pick for Couch, which the Browns might not accept. If a trade does go through in the future, the Bears would have to re-work Couch;s contract, which calls for salaries of $6.2 million, $7.6 million, and $8 million over the next three seasons.

God, I am gettin' the news out fast these days!  Latest, as per the papers available at "the Gridiron Newsstand", is that Couch has never been on the trading block, but there will be an open competition for the starting job in training camp.  However, that Beacon Journal report is slightly refuted by the Plain Dealer report in that the PD makes it sound more like Couch isn't going to be dealt because his value is too low and the QB market is somewhat flooded, at least with numbers if not high quality.  In other words, it makes it sound more like the Browns don't have a choice but to keep him.  In any case, here are the links:

Well, the latest from "the Gridiron Newsstand" is that Head Coach Butch Davis claims that one of the two has the "edge" and, as such, there will NOT be a "completely" open competition for the starting QB spot.  Sounds like coach-speak.  I suggest reading it for yourself and seeing what you think.  It is worth the read.  Here is a link to the piece; it is in the Akron Beacon-Journal:

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/523879 5.htm.

What do you guys think?  Who do you think is the guy with the edge?

Here's what Tim Couch looks like these days:  ???

The latest out of CNN/SI and from "the Gridiron Newsstand" is that head coach Butch Davis is remaining mum on the issue, even maintaining his non-commital posture... posturing during a sit-down meeting with Couch:

This situation continues to deserve its own thread...  Latest developments... uhhhh... ???  Here is the LATEST story HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/549288 6.htm.

Any predictions on who you think will have the starting job come Week 1?  I, for one, think they will open the season with Couch, but he will be on a short leash, and when it comes around, don't be fooled by performance during preseason games. -"It just don't matta'!
