Peterson on Green and Greenbacks

Ripped straight out of the KC Star gotten via "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"Carl Peterson on... Trent Green.

The whole off-season hinges on what the Chiefs do with Trent Green. Technically, Green is signed. But on March 2, he is poised to get an $8 million roster bonus. That, along with a $2 million salary would mean a colossal $10 million hit to the salary cap.

Peterson says there are only three options.

1. Renegotiate. Peterson says he's willing to turn that $8 million roster bonus into an $8 million signing bonus, which would give Green the same amount of money but would significantly lighten the salary-cap hit. So far, Peterson says, Green's agent Jim Steiner is unwilling to do that.

2. Pay the roster bonus. Peterson says the team could do that, although it would end any hope of getting big-name defensive help. 'We do have enough cap room to do that,' he says. 'We could live with it. But it would pretty much limit us so we could not do much of anything else in free agency. That would be unfortunate.'

3. Say goodbye and part ways. 'We haven't gotten to this decision by any means,' Peterson says. Still, he brings it up for the first time. He says there are lot of other quarterbacks out there who would be thrilled to run this offense. A threat? Maybe. Everybody knows Peterson has reasons for what he says. Everybody knows Peterson plays hardball. And everybody knows Peterson has been through this with Steiner before. Steiner represented Elvis Grbac three years ago when Grbac went to Baltimore.

'You know,' Peterson says, 'it could come down to a situation where we say 'Look, if you feel you cannot help us and help this football team then maybe we just need to go in a different direction.'

'I've had personal conversations with our quarterback Trent Green. I think he should be extremely appreciative of the support our head coach has given him. Dick Vermeil has been his biggest supporter and, in spite of a rocky first year, he never wavered. Dick said, 'This is my quarterback.' And we have worked very hard to surround him with a really good supporting cast. I think Trent understands all this and wants very much to stay here.'"

Show me the money!

Carl Peterson was the right man for the job when he was hired. Find it hard to bad mouth him too much, cause he did play a major role in turning the franchise around. I'd sure love to have been a fly on the wall back when the bonus was being "sold" in the original negotiations. If it was dangled, de facto carrot like, as a real, obtainable end, then the Chiefs need to pony up even though it will screw us again. Carl Peterson and quarterbacks  DO NOT MIX.

They "got 'er done". Green signed a new 7 year deal.

Word is it's a 7 year, 50 mil deal with a 9.5 mill signing bonus. Not discussed in that article but also they signed LB Mike Maslowski and DE/Special teamer Gary Stills.
