Lions Offseason Report

Well, here is the short of it as per the Detroit Free Press gotten off of "the Gridiron Newsstand": "They apparently will not pay Germane Crowell the $2 million needed to exercise their option for next season, but they might attempt to sign him to a lesser contract. The Lions have concerns about the knee injuries that have reduced Crowell's speed and ability to get open." Here is the whole lowdown from the local dailies covering the Lions (something about a Freudian slip's being involved ): http://www.detnews.com/2003/lions/0302/21/h01-91157.htm; http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=7134712&BRD=982&PAG=46 1&dept_id=458069&rfi=6; http://www.freep.com/sports/lions/lions21_20030221.htm. I hope this helps you all with your prepping for FFworld dominance. In any event, where do you all think Crowell might land? And, what are his chances at finding future success? Edited to change the Topic!

Well, it has been confirmed. Crowell, along with Desmond Howard, has been cut. They are claiming that they have an interest in re-signing him, which I think is a little surprising. Here is the lowdown obtained via "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.mlive.com/sportsflash/profootball/index.ssf?/newsflash/get_st ory.ssf?/cgi-free/getstory_ssf.cgi?g8429_BC_FBN--LionsMoves&&sports&mi-nfl. So, again, where do you all think he'll end up? And, moreover, can he still succeed, particularly from a fantasy standpoint?

As the topic now reads, UFA RB Shawn Bryson was signed to a contract and RFA LB Na'il Diggs of the Packers was signed to an offer sheet. Here it is from ESPN and "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1528807.html; http://www.freep.com/sports/lions/lbrf24_20030324.htm; http://www.detnews.com/2003/lions/0303/24/c06-116935.htm. Well, now Bryson is off the market and, thus, unavailable to the Chiefs, Cowboys, Patriots and whoever else might have been interested. I think he will really push James Stewart for the starting job and if Stewart gets injured, that may be it for him. That having been said, I do NOT think Bryson is a good fit in the West Coast Offense. I did not think Stewart was either, though, and he has actually been pretty good... when not injured, of course. What do you guys think? Also, any takes on the Diggs signing?

| Pinner was put on the injured list (not sure which one, non-football injury, I think) and Luke Staley was released... So you're looking at Shawn Bryson as the man right now.

This is one of those situations we need to watch very carefully. I don't think Staley is an option. HOWEVER, Betts and Watson from Washington are!!! The Skins have too many running backs. Watson would be a good fit. Betts would be even better. |
| I talked to Matt Murphy (Lions TE who is married to my sister-in-law's best friend) a while back and he said Avon Cobourne was very impressive in the mini-camps. I doubt they'd start him over Shawn Bryson though. The Lions will be OK for a few weeks with Bryson/Cobourne while Stewart recovers - separated shoulders are not serious in the long term. But the Skins are said to be shopping either Watson or Betts... might be something to watch.

| I agree with this! I just immediately thought Duce in knee-jerk fashion, but Betts and even moreover Watson would be excellent fits and are apparently very available. But, I still think Duce is a possibility.
