Shag 420/Any astute K.C. Chiefs fan, I am starting to hear whispers about the Priest's hip still hurting. Also, I have heard the words holdout and Holmes in the same sentence. And, it has been brought to my attention that they are quite interested in Shawn Bryson. I kind of generally know what's up with all of this, but could you hook us up with the insider-style local lowdown? Please, perty please! Then... we can all hash it out and get to "the Gridiron" bottom line. Edited to adjust the Topic!

Putting the hip issue aside, here's my take on the situation. Until he got hurt, he was gonna bust a whole buncha records in his second year with the team. He also was the second best back in the league the year before. Now, he wants to get paid like a top two back. Considering the Rams paid Faulk when he was there, I'd guess the Chiefs will pay Holmes. However, they have to play this "we don't want to pay you" game in my opinion. If they just opened up their wallet for Priest without any hesitation, Gonzo would be pissed all over again. This issue won't be resolved until June/July/August, when Priest is either healthy and gettin paid or unhealthy and forced to sign a crappy 1 yr contract (which, if I was his agent, I sure as hell wouldn't advise).

As this is going to be a long, drawn-out process, on two fronts might I add, the injury front and the contract front, I thought this is a big enough story to merit (the perpetuation of) its own thread. So, lets keep information sharing and discussion on the Priest Holmes situation this offseason HERE on this thread. In any event, here is the LATEST from "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city _chiefs/5465986.htm. I, for one, still believe that unless this injury is really career-ending, we will see him on the field for the Chiefs come Week 1 of the season, perhaps after a long hold-out, though, one that could last right on through training camp. I just think the Priest, who is no spring and very much so a product of the system, is not in a position of strength, i.e. to be sittin' out whole or even significant parts of seasons.

Well, the Priest underwent arthroscopic hip surgery today. They really waver on the issue. First, they say that this was scheduled long ago. Then, they claim it will push his rehab back four to six weeks. How can that be if it was in the initial plans? Finally, they state that this surgery speeds up the process of rehabilitation. Huh? In any event, here is the report HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city _chiefs/5479152.htm. It is a good, short, intriguing read. I'd recommend checking it out. In any case, what are your guys' thoughts? I, for one, think that he will be fine, but that it is just too early to give any precise prognosis, meaning any word until they can is really just hype and news-making.

Well, Fanball is finally chiming in: http://www.fanball.com/article.cfm/ID.1317. Of course, "Senior Editor" Paul Charchian can't even do his homework well enough to get Priest Holmes's age right. Thus, mitigating the weight of his opinion in my mind. He emphatically, early in the piece refers to the "31-year-old" back. As per Street & Smith's, guy was born on October 7, 1973, G.! That would make him 29 entering the season. He then goes on to make some convoluted point about "surgery's always being the last option" using Ike Hilliard's foot injury last offseason as a case for his point. The usage of this example as support for his argument is logically weak. He may be right, but you could actually make the opposite case, i.e., that getting surgery done early in the offseason is a good idea, by way of the Hilliard example. "Senior-edit" THIS, G.!
