Shag 420/Any astute K.C. Chiefs fan,

I am starting to hear whispers about the Priest's hip still hurting. Also, I have heard the words holdout and Holmes in the same sentence. And, it has been brought to my attention that they are quite interested in Shawn Bryson. I kind of generally know what's up with all of this, but could you hook us up with the insider-style local lowdown?  Please, perty please! Then... we can all hash it out and get to "the Gridiron" bottom line.

Edited to adjust the Topic!

best thing I can tell on Priest is that  he'll be at an awards banquet here in KC tonight. Should here some eyewitness accounts tomorrow.

All I know of the Bryson talk is just that. Talk. He is supposedly scheduled to come in, but a big/biggerish back like that puzzles me.

I have heard so many rumours surrounding Priest Holmes status, it's ridiculous.

One rumour was that a press conference was being held, sometime last week, to announce Holmes' retirement, that Press conference just turned out to be Kansas City signing free agents, like Shawn Barber.

Read this in the Star telegram.  Just more gossip:

Emmitt going to Chiefs....Priest Holding Out or injured.  Probaly won't happen with Smith, but should make Holmes owners scared.

Now that Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, is on the market, he could be viewed as an ideal insurance policy for the Chiefs. The status of starter Priest Holmes is not fully known. He is still at less than 100 percent because of the hip injury that ended his 2002 season, and he has hinted he would consider holding out for a new contract.

This is very interesting. I read somewhere else too that Priest was not on schedule and still having hip issues. I don't think Bryson is the best fit, and Emmitt is only a stop gap, but could work as a good filler for that offense.
Holmes is 30 afterall so it should concern some owners. I still think Holmes has at least 2 solid yrs left, but is more a product of the system and OL. Only time will tell if his hip can handle the abuse of playing again.
Look Holmes, Emmitt is coming to town.
They need a WR more than anything. I think Bruce is an UFA next year. I think they will use Tony G more next year as a result of this injury.
We will see.

Putting the hip issue aside, here's my take on the situation.

Until he got hurt, he was gonna bust a whole buncha records in his second year with the team.  He also was the second best back in the league the year before.

Now, he wants to get paid like a top two back.    Considering the Rams paid Faulk when he was there, I'd guess the Chiefs will pay Holmes.  However, they have to play this "we don't want to pay you" game in my opinion.  If they just opened up their wallet for Priest without any hesitation, Gonzo would be pissed all over again.  This issue won't be resolved until June/July/August, when Priest is either healthy and gettin paid or unhealthy and forced to sign a crappy 1 yr contract (which, if I was his agent, I sure as hell wouldn't advise).

As this is going to be a long, drawn-out process, on two fronts might I add, the injury front and the contract front, I thought this is a big enough story to merit (the perpetuation of) its own thread.  So, lets keep information sharing and discussion on the Priest Holmes situation this offseason HERE on this thread.  In any event, here is the LATEST from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city _chiefs/5465986.htm.

I, for one, still believe that unless this injury is really career-ending, we will see him on the field for the Chiefs come Week 1 of the season, perhaps after a long hold-out, though, one that could last right on through training camp.  I just think the Priest, who is no spring and very much so a product of the system, is not in a position of strength, i.e. to be sittin' out whole or even significant parts of seasons.

Well, the Priest underwent arthroscopic hip surgery today.  They really waver on the issue.  First, they say that this was scheduled long ago.  Then, they claim it will push his rehab back four to six weeks.  How can that be if it was in the initial plans?  Finally, they state that this surgery speeds up the process of rehabilitation.  Huh? In any event, here is the report HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city _chiefs/5479152.htm.

It is a good, short, intriguing read.  I'd recommend checking it out.  In any case, what are your guys' thoughts?  I, for one, think that he will be fine, but that it is just too early to give any precise prognosis, meaning any word until they can is really just hype and news-making.

Stegey, you and i had this conversation months ago. I don't think it is Bo Jackson, but still should worry Holmes owners. This is NOT GOOD NEWS. This was not planned. So he rehab was not going well. It sounds like a range of motion issue to me, which means his cutting and speed will be hampered. The thing about scraping is that it is for long term.

Not to mention the contract issues...which he does deserve a raise!...IMO...

The old saying goes, "There's no such thing as minor surgery", and it applies well to this situation. Everyone in the KC camp is positive about the entire situation, but no one will really know until he's back in action. I think it's safe to say that this will affect his status in next year's fantasy draft... at least for me. I'd have to think long and hard and be convinced that he's made a full recovery before I used my 1st round pick on him.

I hear ya on that one.  Priest carried me to more victories this year than I care to count.  But this clouds my draft board immensely.  He was my hands-down 1.1 pick, but who knows now...

If Holmes never got injured... my #1 pick would still HAVE TO  undoubtedly be Ladainian Tomlinson...  and it will be if I do get the #1 pick next season, whether Holmes is healthy or not.

Here is an interesting read reference Holmoe's hip. It also touches on his contract a bit.

Well, Fanball is finally chiming in:

http://www.fanball.com/article.cfm/ID.1317.

Of course, "Senior Editor" Paul Charchian can't even do his homework well enough to get Priest Holmes's age right.  Thus, mitigating the weight of his opinion in my mind.  He emphatically, early in the piece refers to the "31-year-old" back.  As per Street & Smith's, guy was born on October 7, 1973, G.!  That would make him 29 entering the season. He then goes on to make some convoluted point about "surgery's always being the last option" using Ike Hilliard's foot injury last offseason as a case for his point.  The usage of this example as support for his argument is logically weak.  He may be right, but you could actually make the opposite case, i.e., that getting surgery done early in the offseason is a good idea, by way of the Hilliard example. "Senior-edit" THIS, G.!

I agree with KJ76 on the holmes issue. My number one pick regardless of holmes status would be tomlinson and my 2nd would be portis.

For those of you holding out hope like me, here is some goodish news from "the Gridiron Newsstand"... Holmes makes an appearance and says (in essence) "Don't believe the hype!  I'll be fine!"  Here are the links:

I think this whole hip thing is real shady. They have been keeping this whole situation quiet. And the fact that Holmes would even try to get a new deal after that type of injury makes me   . Who in their right mind would give him a huge contract (yes, he was the biggest stud last year untill the injury). Not only is the ? Can Priest still run,but Can Priest make it through the preseason? I think Holmes' durability is in serious question. And until he can prove him self again he won't get

I just read this info on Holmes, take it for what it's worth.
John Clayton reports that the Chiefs expect Holmes to be at full speed by the second week in June.
