...and it looks like he's going, or at least that's the overall local concensus. Moreover, some are showing him the door... in a way. Here is ALL the LATEST HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand" (and these are some REAL goodies... I would recommend them all): http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/ny-coles113168388mar11,0,393 4558.story?coll=ny%2Djets%2Dheadlines; http://www.nypost.com/sports/jets/31943.htm; http://www.northjersey.com/page.php?qstr=eXJpcnk3ZjczN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXkxMjE mZmdiZWw3Zjd2cWVlRUV5eTYzNTIyNjUmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2; http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/66115p-61567c.html; http://www.app.com/nfl/jets/story/0,21403,703764,00.html.

Well, the Skins ain't gettin' Morton, who, as per the piece above, was actually the best of all the Redskins potential acquisitions. The Jets matched! Here is how the story goes as ripped right off "the Gridiron Newsstand" (with no double-dips on the AP report): http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/wire/sns-ap-fbn-jets-morton, 0,2456336.story?coll=sns%2Dap%2Djets%2Dheadlines; http://www.nypost.com/sports/jets/32117.htm; http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/view_toparchive.php?id=410. Oh, and ESPN chimed in too: http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1522873.html.

Well, it ain't a done deal yet. Get a load of what ESPN's John Clayton is NOW reporting: "Morton's contract with Jets under fire... The Chad Morton story isn't over even though the Jets matched the Redskins' offer sheet. The NFL Players Association has requested an expedited hearing to resolve a dispute in the five-year contract signed by Morton. The Jets didn't match a portion of the contract that voided the fourth and fifth years of the deal. Morton signed the contract with the understanding that it would be a five-year deal that would void to three seasons. 'Chad might be the most fought-over special teams player in history,' said his agent, Leigh Steinberg. 'There is going to be a hearing within 10 days with an arbiter because the Jets failed to match the void in his contract. They claim that they didn't match the void because, in their opinion, it wasn't a principle term of the contract. If we prevail, he would go back to the Redskins.' Steinberg said he contacted the NFLPA once the contract was returned Thursday and didn't include the sections of the contract that had the voids." Oh, brother!

They are now pursuing 49ers restricted free-agent WR Tai Streets. He is to meet with Jets officials this week. I can't find any corroboration of this yet on "the Gridiron Newsstand". So, if you can, please post. Also, given this latest news, Dirk, you may want to tweak the title of this thread. I was going to start a whole new thread, but did not think that this was news big enough yet to merit its own thread. Just a suggestion!

Well, got some corroboration of the report above. Between these two pieces out of "the Gridiron Newsstand" and ESPN, everybody from the likes of Streets, to Marcus Robinson, to Curtis Conway, to Kevin Johnson, to Kevin Dyson, to Antonio Freeman are speculated about: http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1047627015227570. xml; http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1524543.html. The most likely candidate seems to be Streets as it is reported that the Jets and 49ers have already worked out a trade, which would entail the 49ers' signing him and then trading him to the Jets for less than a 1st round pick. What do you all think? I think he fits in better than Coles, actually, in the sense that he is different. Before, Coles, Chrebet, Moss, 6 of one - half a dozen of the other, basically little fast guys. Whereas, Streets brings size and power to the position with his 6'2", 206-lb. frame. As such, I think he is a better complement. I also think he is better than the rest of the guys listed, especially when considering his youth.

Here's the absolute latest according to ESPN's John Clayton: "Conway makes pitch to Jets... Curtis Conway completed his visit to the Jets. 49ers receiver Tai Streets preceded him. Conway's pitch to the Jets is that he could easily ease the pain of losing wide receiver Laveranues Coles because they would get value without having sacrifice a first-round choice. Conway tried to convince the Jets that his numbers were equal to if not better than the receivers whom the Jets are interviewing. Conway caught 71 passes in 2001 and was on pace to 86-catch season until a shoulder injury cut the 2002 year six games short. Despite the six missed games, Conway was only 23 catches shy of Coles' two-year numbers and within one touchdown. The Jets are using Tuesday to debate whether to match the seven-year, $35 million deal Coles signed with the Redskins or sign Streets to an offer sheet. The Jets had a visit from Seahawks restricted free agent Darrell Jackson, but they apparently aren't going to make an offer. Kevin Dyson's visit to New York was cancelled by the team late last week. Conway's point is that over a two-year period, is that he averaged 5.4 catches a game for 79.4 yard, while Coles averaged 5.5 catches and 79 yards a game over the same period." Dyson's out; they seem to like Streets a lot, and Conway makes a hell of a pitch!

Well, it is now being reported that contract proposals have been exchanged between Streets's agent and the Jets. Here is the proof right off "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41762-2003Mar17.html. And, as per "the Gridiron Newsstand", the Jets only have until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow to make a decision regarding Coles and they don't seem to be able/willing to match that $13-million signing bonus: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/story/68092p-63354c.html. By the way, other teams mentioned courting Streets were the Patriots and Lions. The article also discusses the possibility of Raghib Ismail's going to Washington.
