Cardinals Offseason Report

That's right!  The Cardinals, who have a lot of money to spend, or should I say, based on precedent, waste, have landed one of the most overrated players available on the free-agent market this year (outside of quarterbacks, of course, as they are ALL overrated, yes, even including my boy Jake) S Dexter Jackson.  Anyway, here is the latest out of ESPN and "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/03/12/Bucs/Jackson_won_t_be_retu.shtml;

Wow, this really comes as a surprise to me. I heard that the Steelers were the ones in the running... I can't believe Dexter actually took the Arizona deal...

The Steelers had talked to him, but not surprised that they didn't overpay for a guy just because he recently got some hardware.

Cardinals sign Jeff Blake... I'll find the link in just a second...

Here it is via Gridiron Newstand

Arizona also signed former Rams FB James Hodgins

More discussion on the signing of Jeff Blake is on the following thread:

http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;a ction=display;num=1047508346.

I will not lock that thread as this was "headliner" type news that could have been thought of as deserving a thread of its own (at the time of posting at least).  I will, however, link this thread to that one, as well.  Linking them together seems to suffice in this case.

Smith Contract; Seau Contact

The Cardinals have officially extended a contract to Emmitt and are looking into signing Seau.  CB Tod McBride and DE Vonnie Holliday were also discussed.  Here are the reports from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/0318cardsnb0318.html;

http://eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=1915.

Any thoughts, especially regarding Emmitt?

EMMITT HAS A NEW HOME!!!

Have not had confirmation of this, but I just saw this on Sportsline as I was browsing:

Quote:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The NFL's all-time leading rusher has found a new time.

The Arizona Cardinals, a franchise that has one playoff victory in the last half-century, will announce the signing of Emmitt Smith at a 2:30 MT press conference Wednesday.

Smith was released Feb. 27 by Dallas.

ARIZONA CARDINALS - EMMITT SMITH COMING ABOARD
ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli and Chris Mortensen report the Arizona Cardinals have agreed to terms in principle with RB Emmitt Smith (Cowboys) on a contract. There are still some marketing issues that need to be addressed, but both sides acknowledged those elements of the deal are close to completion.

Well, it is officially official.  Emmitt is a Cardinal!

Here is ALL THE LATEST including the local lowdown out of "the Gridiron Newsstand" as well as what ESPN has to report; somewhat redundant, but worth sifting through; the best read of them all is the one out of azCardinals.com; if you don't read them all, read that one:

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/0326emmitt26-ON.html;

http://phoenix.cox.net/cci/portal/.cmd/ActionDispatcher/_pagr/124/_pa.12 4/603/.aref/3970640/.st/X/.piid/1797/.ciid/4212#4212;

http://eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=2366;

http://www.azcardinals.com/press/pressdetails.php?sid=1141;

http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2003/0326/1529948.html.

Any thoughts?  My first thought, from a fantasy perspective, is that this decreases the value of RB Marcel Shipp quite a bit!  How can't it?

This is shocking.   I know Smith wanted to play really bad, but Arizona? Are you kidding me? Is that the best he could do? Does he really think that Arizona is going to do something in the next few years? Forget the Super Bowl, can they even make the playoffs? I doubt it. To me, it's just padding the stats and that's sad. If he had never won a Super Bowl or was short of the all-time rushing title, I might be a little more forgiving, but this guy has done it all. I just don't get it. ???

Poor Emmitt,   this is the best he can do???   I guess he would rather committ suicide??? He services could be used better elsewhere. This really makes no sense form ARIZ standpoint except for 2 logical reasons, and the 2nd is useless.
1st- He can mentor Shipp-GREAT IDEA.
2nd- He can put fans in the seats??? I GUESS????--see my point??? He prolly wants to pad his TDS. He will not get as many carries and wont be the starter for sure. I just don't get it??
What a fucking waste of talent.
Let's see, let PLummer and Boston got for NOTHING!!!,a nd then sign an OLD PLAYER?COACH as a mentor.
Like i have said in many other posts: ARIZ has taken the place of CINN as the worst managed franchise in the NFL, and I thought i would have never said that.

He's not even on my radar.   All this does, in my opinion, is hurt Shipp's fantasy numbers a bit.

My question is:

Who in the HELL is going to catch the ball for Blake?

Boston? Gone. Jenkins? Gone. Sanders. PLEASE!!

Are they planning on drafting a few rookies to start, or sign a few players, like maybe M-Rob and Crowell and hope they bounce back? Not really much left in the FA pool...

Cards release backup Fb and special teamer Dennis McKinley. He is being charged with international drug trading. I just heard it on ESPN SPORTCENTER. I'm sure it will be on all the sites tmrw.
And they thought Boston was a problem...again the hapless Cards had "no idea" of what this guy was doing. They are the worse franchise in the league. It was CINN in my book for about 12 yrs..Ariz takes the #1 spot now. IDIOTS. Do yourselves a favor guys and don't take any  Cards players for FF this year.
His is no major producer, but how can you miss a guy that dealt 1000's of pounds of pot across the border for the past few yrs. The DEA nailed this guy. This also has to be a major blow for the NFL. I can't wait to see the "spin".

It is still  unknown who will catch the ball in AZ this year.  Here is a question and answer with new AZ WR Coach Tyke Tolbert (from Arizona Cardinals web site)

Who are your top four wide receivers and who is going to start this year?

That is a good question. We lost our top three receivers to free agency so we pretty much have a whole new group. We are basically going to put them in the wash and see what comes out. We’ve got some guys who have been here, but because you have been here before doesn’t mean you are going to be the guy. We drafted a guy in the first round and in the second round so those guys will be in the mix with some of our vets. We’ll have to see what our best combination is.
