Dolphins Offseason Report

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/5474446.htm

Miami is looking to pursue the services of Junior Seau, and who can blame them. Even if he's at a decline in his career, he's still a Top 25 LB, that's how GREAT he was.

I couldn't find any specific thread for a general Dolphins OffSeason Report... so hopefully I got it right by doing this...

This is fine!  There was a thread regarding the Dolphins' signing of Derrius Thompson.  I should have changed the topic of that thread to "Dolphins Offseason Report".  That's my bad. Here is a link to that thread, but let's keep "Dolphins Offseason" discussion on this thread:

http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;a ction=display;num=1047084279.

However, you should have added a as your message icon.  I hope you don't mind my doing so!

Just to update this:

Miami meets all 4 requirments that Seau wants and both team and player have sent feelers out. If something happens expect it to be soon and look for Miami to trade for Seau now rather then wait until June 1st when he is released and will command more interest.

Seau will need to take less money and restructure.

As a Miami fan I think it will be a good signing but will all depend on what kind of contract he signs.

This will be a good fit for both parties...if he is cheap...Miami will prolly give up a 5-6th rounder for him in this yrs draft. He still has 2 solid yrs left and teamsed w/ Zach would be tough to beat.

Speaking of Zach he signed an extension today through 2008. This frees up the cap room for Seau.

Seau will not only bring an upgrade of talent at the OLB position, but will also bring a motivation in the Miami lockerroom, which may light a fire under the Dolphins so games like last year's Vikings game don't happen. Zach Thomas doesn't seem to be able to do so himself... no doubt Seau will...

Big media news sources are okay, but I prefer to get mine from the horse's mouth and substantiate the report by way of "the Gridiron Newsstand".  So, with that said, here are the local reports regarding Thomas's extension:

This is the actual, original press release out of Dolphins headquarters-
http://www.miamidolphins.com/pressbox/pressreleases/pressreleases.asp?co ntentID=2615;

Another local quickie :

HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand", it seems like the Dolphins are going to put an offer on the table for Seau here sometime soon and make a deal with the Chargers as there seems to be a number of teams in the mix and they don't want to lose out by waiting until June 1st:

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-marvez31mar 31,0,6201007.column?coll=sfla%2Ddolphins%2Dfront.

Do you think they can "afford" to wait, fellas?

They can afford to wait until June 1st but they won't. Miami fans are plenty upset with the lack of F/A signings especially with what NE and BUF did this off season. It appears they will only need to give up something like a 5th or 6th round pick to get Seau in ASAP.

But even if they waited I could still see Miami getting him as both parties have said they want the other.

The one-two punch of "The Real Feed" and "the Gridiron Newsstand" workin' wonders yet again. First seen on "The Real Feed", then on "the Gridiron Newsstand"...  DT Jeff Zgonina brought on board the fishing boat fishing for Dolphins.  Check out the feed and this, the original press release by the Dolphins' brass:

http://www.miamidolphins.com/pressbox/pressreleases/pressreleases.asp?co ntentID=2618.

I think he is a perfect fit: exp, skills, runstuffer, smart..a bit slow..., covers ok,and can't be worse than what we have.Face it!!! We have been trying to get a solid/GOOD
OLB through the draft for yrs and can't do it... on either side...SO JR fitss the 2 year void.
SF, Raider and DEN all use this 1-3 yr contract VETS to "borrow" time for them to get short term production and leadership.
He is cheap IMO, and fits the bill.

He is no prize but he is an upgrade from Haley, who it appears will be traded or will sign with another team. But to be honest we were already deep at DL and this signing will probably be viewed as a waste of money.

Dolphins aquire OL Michael Thompson from Atlanta today for a 7th round pick in 2004.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1533335.html

Also Scott Gaylon retired. He was strictly a special teams player but now we are even more hurting at LB depth.

Well, first of all, as per the current headline atop "The Real Feed", the Michael Thompson deal has been nixed.  Check out "The Real Feed" for details...

Secondly, here is a little more local lowdown from "the Gridiron Newsstand" regarding the Dolphins' interest in Seau:

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/5545739.htm.

Looks like they are willing to part with one of their later-round picks for him.  I think it would be worth it if there is a real chance that if they wait until June 1st, they won't get him.

The Dolphins aren't too pleased with the schedule and especially the Sunday night game and then the Thankgiving Day game.

Although Seau appears to be a lock to come to Miami.

I'd be more worried about playing another game in the Meadowlands myself.

Bills | Wannstedt: Team to Beat - posted at KFFL (nfl.kffl.com)
10:20 PT: Allen Wilson, of the Buffalo News, reports Miami Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt believes the Buffalo Bills should be picked to win the AFC East this season. Wannstedt said he is impressed by Buffalo's acquisitions, but noted, "I'm glad they don't have (wide receiver) Peerless Price anymore, because we haven't tackled him yet." Price was traded to the Atlanta Falcons.

Sammy Knight may be coming in for a look although not sure if Miami can afford him.

April 4, 2003
Knight to visit Steelers early next week
Former Saints safety Sammy Knight is finally hitting the road. He visits the Steelers early next week and is trying to schedule a visit to the Dolphins. Despite being one of the league leaders in big plays (interceptions, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries) over the past few years in New Orleans, Knight hasn't had many calls in the early phase of free agency.

Be prepared for some competiton in Miami during training camp and preseason. Looks like the QB position may be up in the air and Miami is going to give Griese a chance to beat Fiedler.

Bad idea IMO but news worthy nonetheless.

By the way, here is some substantiation from "the Gridiron Newsstand" of what Bouve claimed regarding the apparent/alleged certainty that QB Brian Griese will end up in Miami:

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/5570685.htm.

Nice, short read!  I'd check it out!  It does sound very "affirmative."

Well, what Bouve was reporting was being corroborated on "the Gridiron Newsstand".  Here are a couple articles purporting the likelihood/probability of Seau's going to the Dolphins in a trade... by Monday... tomorrow:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20030412-9999_1s12seau.htm l;

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-dolphins11a pr11,0,7397914.story?coll=sfla%2Ddolphins%2Dfront.

But, as of the update at midnight April 14th on "The REAL Feed", it is appears that a kibosh is going to be put on the deal.  Here is ALL the ABSOLUTE LATEST from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/5617520.htm;

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/auto/epaper/editions/monday/ sports_e3a9a203034450c7005a.html.

Any thoughts, anyone (Bouve)?
