Bengals Offseason Report

Thought these goodies from "the Gridiron Newsstand", especially in light of RB Corey Dillon's recent absence from mini-camp, would be a good way to kick off a Cincinnati Bengals Offseason Report thread:

http://bengals.enquirer.com/2003/04/12/wwwben1a12.html;

http://www.cincypost.com/bengals/2003/bengnt04-12-2003.html;

Bengals Notebook -
http://bengals.enquirer.com/2003/04/12/wwwben2a12.html.

Honestly, nothing to worry about on the Dillon front... if you were wondering what my take was.

The mini-camp was VOLUNTARY.  Dillon was pissed that everyone was making a big deal out of it.  He was spending time with his family.

I guess the media thinks VOLUNTARY is mandatory.

Not just the media... a lot of the coaches call it a "voluntary" mini-camp only because they can't call it a "mandatory" mini-camp.

I haven't read the articles (because, frankly, I could give a rat's ass   about the Bengals right now  ) so I don't know Marvin Lewis's take on all of this.

What week do you guys think Carson Palmer gets the starting nod? Personally, I think by mid-season. Any thoughts?

To be honest with you, unless Kitna gets hurt or the Bengals offense is completely inept, Palmer won't get any starts this year.

I think the Bengals offense will be OK.  Kitna played solid in the 2nd half of the season.  Chad Johnson emerged as a quality NFL WR.  Dillon still gets his.  Warrick has developed a "new and improved attitude" coming into this season...  so as long as Kitna is healthy, he'll be the starter all year.

I think if their record, which probably will, falls below .500, Lewis will try to develop him!

Not "if", when their record falls below .500.

Looks like Dillon is on board now. This article is right off the Bengals website..

In the minutes after last season's loss in the finale at Buffalo, Bengals running back Corey Dillon shared a joke with fullback Lorenzo Neal that went along the lines that neither wanted to start another season at Georgetown College.

Well, Neal isn't coming back because he's in San Diego. But Dillon isn't laughing in the Marvin Lewis era and on Wednesday he put his money and his house on the Bengals winning the AFC North.

"I'm not saying we're the favorites or anything like that, I just like what we're doing" said Dillon after practice. "I'll put all our chips on us. I'm going to ride with us. If I was a betting man, I'd go with us."

Dillon knows that if he uttered such words in any other year, he would be committed, or at the very least, be on ESPN as the newest joke; But Dillon thinks Lewis has instilled the right ingredients.

"Once you break it down by personnel, player against player across the board, we match up with anybody", Dillon said. "We just needed a little something extra and Marvin brought that."

Dillon's attitude is refreshing, but I'm not so sure I agree with him. I guess when you go 2-14 you have to tell yourself these kinds of things to keep your spirits up. They finished with the league's WORST record, giving up the MOST points and only 4 teams scored fewer points... not a good sign. Even though they play in a pretty weak division, I still see them finishing in the cellar again next season.

I disagree. They play in a weak division with alot of questions. They have a coach who has lifted the spirits of everyone on the team and within the organization, includung some of the most disgruntled players (see Dillon). He has brought in players that can play his defensive system. Don't be surprised if the finish ahead of Baltimore and Cleveland in their division.

Besides, Arizona is in a class by themselves for the cellar position this year...

Cleveland will throw all over the OVERRATED Bengals defense, and Baltimore will SHUT DOWN the non-existent Bengals offense.

I guess we will have to wait and see KJ. But, you are pretty good at predicting things. After all, you did say Detroit was going to win the NBA title.

Oh, wait a minute...

Bengals have signed Shane Matthews.  They got the veteran back up they were looking for.

You know what this means?  Wave BYE BYE Akili Smith

Yes, Bucs released Matthews when they drafted Chris Simms.  They had him on the roster about a month.

In any event, the Matthews story is currently second on "The REAL Feed" and here is all the local corroboration from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Also, an update, according to the second piece, Akili Smith has been told he will be released, so that is in fact a foregone conclusion!

1)  Go Palmer
2)  Go Bengals.  A Bengals AFC Championship means a 9ers NFL Championship
3)  Go Akili.  Just outta pity, I wanna see him do well somewhere else.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of Lewis and Palmer having on this organization.  I boldly predict an 7-9 year for them, 2nd in their division .
