Buy Low, Sell High - everyone participate!

I thought a "good" idea for a participation thread for us active traders would be a value-based thread...guys that you should try to trade for because owners are looking to dump them for recent underperformance (i.e. "buy low") and those that you should try to trade away because they've performed beyond their ability, and are likely to tail off for the rest of the year (i.e. "sell high").  I'd like for each of us to give a rationale for those players we list...

I'll start off...

Buy Low:  Curtis Martin

The Jets have dwelled at the bottom of the basement since the beginning of the season, but have started to show some life.  Add to that the fact that Chad Pennington could return in as little as a couple of weeks, and the offense could really take off.  Once the Jets establish a passing attack, Curtis Martin could see some nice rushing lanes that have been non-existent with Vinny at the helm.  Is he a #1 back?  Probably not, but he could be a decent #2 back in a few weeks that could be gotten for some flashier names.

Sell High:  Quincy Carter

#1 offense in the NFL, eh?  After this week (at Detroit), Carter's stock should be flying pretty high.  The next few weeks will have him crashing back down to Earth as he faces the first TRUE defensive challenges this year, with Tampa, Carolina and Miami coming up.  Remember -the best defense that Dallas has faced thus far is Philadelphia, which is a shadow of its former self.  Arizona, Detroit, and both New York teams have very suspect defenses, and that's what Carter's value is currently based on.  Look to trade him for someone who is underachieving right now, like Drew Bledsoe.  You'll be surprised at how you might get a bite for this inferior talent.

BUY LOW:RB- I have 2

TJ Duckett- They have been giving him more and more reps lately. As the season goes on he will approach 20 per week and get most short ydg TDs. They already ahve changed the area, next is the RB area. Maybe Reeves will do these hand in hand. Duckett is a RB that gets stronger with more carries.

Wm Green- This guy is finally coming into his own. The OL is gelling well, and the passing game is consistant enough to keep the safety back. He has been rolling for a few weeks now. History shows that he finishes the season strong. Also remember Davis took him over Portis last year. THAT says ALOT since he coached Portis in college.

Buy LOW-WR-Anquan Boldin
This guy has had 1 shitty game-33 Yds. The other have been a 60+, 86, 99 and 95, and week 1 blowout. Regarless he is getting the ball and the team is always playing from behind. Shipp will open things up for him. He does lack on the TD side, but will be a solid #2-3 for you and should not cost much, maybe a filler RB and a more "name know" WR that is not doing well-say Gardner or Bobby Shaw type guy. He is very reliable.

SELL HIGH-It was going to be Anthony Thomas, but
I missed it by a week. SO>>>>>>
QB- TRENT GREEN- This guy is at his peak.  Green is overvalued because most FF guys think the offense is turing into the "Rams of old" , don't be fooled!!Vermeil will feed Priest the TDs when he gets the chance.
He had a HUGE game last week us it to help your other areas. He was prolly a backup for you anyway.
Just my $.02.

Terrell Owens.  Last year I sat through the misery, and boy did he reward my patience!  I don't think Garcia is down and out just yet.  I also think Terrell is one of the best conditioned and most competitive players in the league.  This is not exactly a new idea.  Not much of a detailed comment, but Owens always does this, and someone always gives up on him.  The RBBC will keep the passing game possible, and T.O. just needs someone to get the ball somewhere in his zip code when he starts showing up for the season, even in the double coverage.  The heel won't hold him back.  The OL is not protecting Garcia, that's true.  And this week they play Tampa Bay. And on the premium sites I get, Owens is still in the top five WRs against the Bucs! If Owens has a bad game against the Bucs, he may be very under-rated.  After the Bucs, SF is looking at:
Arizona twice, the Rams, their bye, Steelers, Green Bay, Baltimore, Browns, Eagles, Seahawks.  Steelers and Browns are the only really bad news against WRs to date.   Don't know.  But if the chance came up in a league where I don't have him (only one for me this year) I'd do him as trade prey.

There's some nice, meaty stuff here so far.  Great thread idea, Jet!

I'm goin' with two sides of the same coin here...

Buy Low - Kelly Holcomb

Sell High - Tim Couch

Couch looked pretty bad at home yet again.  That's been his problem and probably one of the main reasons behind his benching.  He's just not very good at defending home field.  He is VERY lucky the Raiders are just that bad.  He and the Browns should have lost that game.  Holcomb will be back in the lineup soon.

Jetdoc hit the best "sell-high" tip in the league IMO.  But I'll throw another out there:

Moe Williams
I know he's 2nd tier, but his production to date (avg 80 yds, 0.6 TD) is starting to get cut by Onterrio Smith.  When Bennett comes back, Moe will lose the starting gig for sure, but probably retain the goal line duties.  IMO, that makes him an even riskier play.  At the goal line, you've got DC running it in, fade to Moss, etc.  Trade him now coming off the 2 TD performance vs ATL and hope to get a player with more consistent touches.

Honorable Mention - Lamar Gordon
Much love to my NDSU alum, but Harris looked faster and might steal some touches.  That, and Faulk returning delegates him back to the bench (though I don't know the timeline for Faulk)

Buy-Low is tough in my league, as we have 10 teams and 15 man rosters, leaving slim-pickens on the waiver wire.  But I'll take a flyer on:

Jerry Porter
Coming back off injury soon, and will prove he's the one making OAK tick on offense.  Unless someone has stashed him away for this whole time (as in my league), he's possibly available on the wire.  Not sure how low you can get him if taken, since the GM is probably thinking the same thing if they still have him.

GO VIKES!

T.O. is my buy low pick.

As for sell high, I think Captain Purple hit it on the head with Moe Williams.  It's RBBC time in that particular tundra.  Just add what he said about Williams.

I got another pair...

Buy Low - Jerome Bettis

Sell High - Amos Zereoue

I think Pittsburgh is going to start going back to a more, well, "Pittsburghesque" offense, meaning more Bus.  This attempt at a "wide-open" offense in Pittsburgh has essentially failed, especially trying to run it with Zereoue, who is, a poor man's Tiki Barber.  Bettis had more carries than Zereoue last week and scored the touchdown.  This trend will continue as the Pittsburgh O "normalizes".

I think the Steelers want to go to RBBC with Zereoue getting the yards and Bettis as vulture back.  I think the only thing that will stop them from doing it is if the Bus can still do it.  Trade 'em both, high or low!

BUY LOW:

Chad Pennington
He is practicing with the team and actually was available as the emergency QB last week.  He might start against the Eagles this week or against Atlanta the following week at the latest.  The Jets have turned the corner a bit with a couple wins in their last two games.  Keep in mind that Pennington broke the wrist on his NON-THROWING hand.  His throwing arm is rested and in good shape, he could keep running and stay in good cardio shape.

SELL HIGH:

Michael Vick
There are rumors about his return and people will be thinking about the Michael Vick who carried the Falcons at the end of last season.  Keep dreaming folks.  Vick's ankle won't be in the same shape it was last year.  If he can't run as much, he won't be nearly as effective a QB.  Remember, he had the same injury that McNabb had last season...  I'm not saying he'll be as bad as McNabb, but he won't be as good as he was last year.

I don't know what to tell yous.  You either got on board in time or you didn't.  This ship's already pulled out of port.

If you didn't get on this ship, you should feel good about it because the SS Holcomb left port with a leak.

I'm fairly confident that Holcomb is the better QB for the Browns.  The players prefer him and he seems to have comparable ability to Couch.  The problem with Holcomb is that he can't play more than a few games before he is injured.

This is the latest news...

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/10667 32298264220.xml

This is taken directly from the story...
Quote:

Bad leg crimps Browns' plans

10/21/03

Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter

Despite the fact that Tim Couch was benched in the 26-20 loss to San Diego, don't rule him out to start this Sunday against Bill Belichick's New England Patriots.

Why? Because the Browns have no idea if Kelly Holcomb will be healthy enough to start the game.

Holcomb, who threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to pull the Browns to within 23-20, admitted after the game that he's been experiencing some bleeding in his broken right fibula and that it's still causing him pain.

Coach Butch Davis said yesterday he won't know until tomorrow whether or not Holcomb will be ready to go. It depends on how well he can move during tomorrow's practice. Couch also suffered a mild ankle sprain on a first-quarter sack, but is in much better shape than Holcomb.

Wow...some good choices here based on this week's performance.

I was tempted to put Brad Johnson on the sell high list, but I figured that Steg might crucify me for it...
