Vikings - Week 16 Analysis
« on: Dec 19th, 2003, 4:07pm »

It's time for a good ol' fashioned shootout!  The Chiefs cant stop anybody.  The Vikings can, as long as your name isn't Flutie/Bulger/Wheatley/Kanell/Barber/Collins/Green/Farte/Grossman!    But good backs have torched the Vikings this year and Priest is the best.  Look for him to have a huge day, and the Vikings D to get Green a couple times, keeping this one close....at least initially.

When the Chiefs have the ball...
The Vikes have been weak vs the outside run, and Priest loves to run there.  I see a big big day for Holmes and Gonzales.  I expect the Chiefs to run a lot and get the play action going vs some slow LBs for MIN.  That opens up Gonzales releasing down the seam for some big gains.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Vikings want to run the ball hard to keep Holmes off the field.  I don't think they'll be as successful as DEN was a couple weeks ago when Portis ran for 5 TDs, but they'll have some success.  They'll have to take to the air more than they did vs Chicago to make it work though.  Expect more big play attempts this week to help establish the run.

Key Matchups
Gonzales vs EJ Henderson
This rookie has one helluva-n assignment this week.  Stop the best TE in the game.  He'll fail big time.   Not many can cover TG mano-y-mano.  Gonzo will get some big yards, the trick will be EJ keeping him out of the end zone.

MIN ST vs Hall
This could be the biggest mis-match.  Vikings ST aren't good.  They rank in the lower middle class of the ST world
I DIGRESS...
that means they're rich if your a Democrat
.  KC ST are numero uno in the league.  Hall should get his record breaking TD this week.

The Game
Vikings are going into this one thinking run-run-run with a couple more big plays mixed in than was attempted vs Chicago.  KC is quite vulnerable to the run.  Vikes will use a bit of RBBC in this one, starting Bennett but giving OSmith a lot of looks and Moe some goalline/3rd Down looks.  They will score quickly, getting the Dome rocking, but Green/Holmes/Gonzo will take over by half time and take a 24-14 lead at half.  The shootout gets into high gear in the 2nd half, and both Green and CPepp get picked a couple times.  Vikes hang in there, but are never really close as they lose this one by 10.

Forecast
  - 34 -   - 44

Daunte Culpepper - 285 pa.yds & 2TDs, 2 INTs, 60 ru.yds & 1TD - Played well enough to win last week...until a 5'10 pass that should've been 7'2" cost them.
Michael Bennett - 65 ru.yds - Hampered by an ankle, will start but probably be part of RBBC
Moe Williams - 10 ru.yds, 65 rec.yds - Could lose some looks with OSmith breaking out last week.
Onterrio Smith - 115 ru.yds & TD - Huge week last week sticks him in for more carries this week...and FINALLY a TD
Randy Moss - 85 yds & 2TDs - Lost the game with lackidaisical effort at goal line last week.
D'wayne Bates - 15 yds - Bad routes, too slow...broken record.
Kelly Campbell - 45 yds - Gets a big play opportunity this week and cashes in.
Nate Burleson - 30 yds - Becoming a nice chain-mover. Runs nice routes.
Jimmy Kleinsasser - 45 yds - Getting nice looks in the flat, but not in the RZ anymore.
Aaron Elling - 2FG (+2 missed) & 4XP - An adventure every time he kicks the ball.
D/ST - 1sack, 2INT - Plays decent, but too much firepower.  ST gives up a TD.

Trent Green - 320 yds & 3TD, 2INT - Only 9 picks this year, but Vikes get him a couple times.
Priest Holmes - 135 yds & 2TDs, 70 rec. yds & 1TD - Marshall-who?.
Johnnie Morton - 55 rec. yds - 3rd option in this high powered offense.
Dante Hall - 45 rec.yds, 15 ru.yds, 125 ret.yds & 1TD - Gets a return TD for the record this week.
Eddie Kennison - 35 yds - Too much Holmes/Hall and Gonzo.
Tony Gonzales - 115 yds & 1TD - Will torch the slow MIN LBs
Morton Anderson - 3FG, 5XP - Having a Pro Bowl year.
D/ST 2INTs, 2sacks - Vulnerable to the run, but playing with a lead this week.

Who were those guys in purple?  More importantly, why couldn't they let Trent Green throw a few TDs?

Anyway, congrats on a big win.  I'll be cheering big time for the Raiders tonight (my fantasy opponent starts 4 Packers) and hope that the Vikes can have sole possession of 1st place going into week 17.

Will the REAL Minnesota Vikings  PLEEEEAASSE stand up!

Just when you think you can write this team off!  Wow!  What a win!

Viking gameplan was just as I expected, but much much more successful than I predicted.  Meanwhile, EJHenderson had a nice game.  They didn't cover Gonzo with him, but he was all over the field regardless.  Vikings played inspired....finally!

I picked the Chiefs to win the Superbowl.  They sure don't look capable of beating anyone right now.

GO VIKES!

Hmm... no week 17 analysis... wonder why?

I would HATE to be a Vikes fan right now.  But don't worry Capt., as an Eagles fan I've been down that road many a time myself.

I didn't give a Pats week 17 analysis for several reasons.  But I am sure I would have predicted a 31 to 0 score over the Bills.    Looking ahead to the playoffs the ONLY team I fear in the AFC is the Ravens.  I still think the Rams are the team to beat in the NFC.  Sorry Philly, but the Eagles inability to stop the run could very well cost them in the playoffs.

Okay, cp, now that you've had a full day to step back and take a deep breath and get some perspective on things and let it all sink in, VENT AWAY!
