Drew Henson tracker

Well, It looks like Drew Henson may finally give up baseball.  Why?  Because he realizes he sucks.  Even with Aaron Boone going down for the Yanks, Henson has been concentrating on football.

The Houston Chronicle reports Henson has been working out with a football coach and has been attending football academies in Florida that other players are working out at.  (link at bottom)

This is good news for the Texans who own his rights until the 2004 draft.  They can trade him for a higher draft pick.  Henson can reenter the draft, but he has no say on where he goes.  If he is traded, he has some input.  In addition, he could probably justify more money in a contract if he is traded for.

On a side note, I think Charlie Casserly is a mastermind of the draft.  He always manages to make late round smart picks, smart trades, and finding that diamond in the rough.  Since he has been with Houston, he has drafted Carr, Dominik Davis, Andre Johnson, Jabar Gaffney, and many others.  Some teams don't even have there first rounders from 2-3 years ago even playing.

If I recall correctly, Henson was a sixth-round pick last year.  Unfortunately, that doesn't spell big contract for him.  He might be better off dong nothing and re-entering the draft.  If teams know he is serious about playing football in 2004, he will definitely go earlier than the sixth round - and get a bigger contract.

Ah yes, he was a sixth rounder, but he will not get a sixth round contract. Every team knows that he would have been a 1st rounder if he came out.

Plus, he can go to a team he would like to go to if he goes before the draft.    He could go to Buffalo, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, or Buffalo, which would all be good fits.(and all have expressed interest in him.)  It is nice to be able to bargain with 4 teams instead of just one.

If he is drafted, he has no say what team he goes to.

Each team has a rookie salary cap which they can't go over.  If the Texans were to sign Henson, they would have to make sure the contract fit under the 2003 rookie salary cap.

Since the Texans already signed their other rookie draft picks to contracts (including Andre Johnson, third overall pick in the draft), they don't have first-round money to give him.  Although I don't know the exact numbers for each of their rookie signings, I can't imagine they could give him anything more than 4th or 5th round money at best...

I think Henson will end up entering the draft once again...

Spotted this on KKFL today:

Texans | Henson Has One Team Interested - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 18 Feb 2004 10:56:02 -0800

Carlton Thompson, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans general manager Charley Casserly said one team has agreed to the Texans' parameters for a possible trade for QB Drew Henson. Casserly and Tom Condon, Henson's agent, are scheduled to meet with several teams at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this week, and more teams are expected to accept the Texans' trade parameters as well. Casserly declined to identify the team that has already accepted the terms. Henson will be allowed to visit with the team that has met the Texans' initial asking price, but it's uncertain when that will take place. Teams looking to acquire Henson must first agree to the trade parameters.

Rumor has it that this unidenified team is the Cleveland Browns.  Now this would be interesting.......

This thread has become WAY more of a "Drew Henson" tracker thread than a "Texans Offseason Report" thread.  Hence, the re-naming of the thread (expect a new "Texans Offseason Report" thread when the time is right).

In any event, I thought I'd keep the Drew Henson watch going with what's currently topping "The REAL Feed":

Henson to work out for Browns
NFL.com (02.03.2004 13:30)

QB Henson holds private workout with Cowboys
NFL.com (02.03.2004 13:29)
