How about this from "The REAL Feed"?  ...

Brees vows to remain Chargers' starter at QB
ESPN: NFL (08.05.2004 22:43)

Here is the LOCAL corroboration from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

AP Report -
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20040507-1604-fbn-chargers -rivers.html;

Local Report -
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004/05/09/sports/professional/0_03_005_ 8_04.txt.

Is he in denial or is there a glimmer of hope for him?

I don't think that bottom link is working anymore. I got a "link not in servive any longer" deal when I clicked on it.

In regards to Rivers, I think he'll be the starter, just first day things he was having to get used to such as new receivers (what receivers? LOL) and a new offensive line to snap the ball just like the article said. He'll come round after while though. I really like the guy myself and think hes going to be a productive QB in this league. Son of a coach - helps is regards to his baseline knowledge and instincts.

I keep hearing comments such as this - that SD has no talent at WR.  I see this as an opportunity for us FF wise.  Someone will probably step up and he will be undervalued.  The question is, who?

My money is on Dyson (as long as he is healthy).  He has performed in the past and has more talent than the others IMO.

Fine point made bgsg, and I hope your right! I like Marty and also Rivers and to boot I own LT2 in my Insane league so, I wish nothing but the best for SD and their whole team in general including their wideouts. Dyson definitely has a great chance of breaking out as you said if health doesn't get in the way though, those secondaries are starting to build up quite a bit in that division so,.......(except KCs however, they are hoping their improved pass rush helps their 2ndary this season) it shall be interesting to see if Rivers starts, if he is successful when/if he does start and also like you mentioned, which WR will take off (Don't forget about LT2 best receiver on that team IMO - comparing SD's wideouts to Arizona's WRs of last year isn't quite the same comparison since Ariz didn't have LT2 to throw to............just a thought).

sorry but to clarify my last post a bit, bgsg & I originally spoke of this in chat when the comparison to a sleeper breakout WR was Boldin of last year.

Anyhow, I do agree there are some sleepers waiting in the wings though, with ALL the TOP notch WRs coming outta the draft this year, perhaps one might look there! as well.

Not good news for Chargers fans:

(is there ever good news for Chargers fans?)

THe Chargers have pulled the contract offer for Rivers off the table.  They were willing to offer him as much as Gallery got, but not as much as Eli got.  I think Rivers is overestimating his value.

And now, Rivers is going to be so far behind in training camp that he won't be starting anytime soon!

This is kind of old news at this point.  I'm surprised no one else got on reporting it before me now (unless it is just considered common knowledge at this point).  Still, it needs discussing.  Here it is off "The REAL Feed":

Chargers, QB Rivers make deal nfl roundup
FREEP: Football (24.08.2004 03:41)
The San Diego Chargers and rookie quarterback Philip Rivers agreed to terms on a six-year contract, ending the first-round draft pick's three-week holdout. The contract will pay Rivers $40.5 million, including a $14.25-million signing bonus. He can earn $10 million more in incentives.

How soon do you guys think he starts?

Mid-season.  Brees has been decent in pre-season and has at least merited a few regular season starts.  Rivers sat out for quite a while and I doubt Schottenheimer is in any rush to throw him to the wolves.

Steg, I have a friend whose a huge NC State 'Wolfpack' fan.  In fact, he even has a designated 'Wolfpack' room in his house, with like a NC State Wolfpack pinball game and custom wallpaper and everything (which is where he sleeps when he has a fight with the wife).

Anyhoo, he goes to all the games and has of course seen Torry Holt and Koren Robinson and Phillip Rivers first hand throughout their college careers, so I was asking him about Phillip Rivers yesterday, and he gave me his personal scouting report:

Very accurate and instinctive passer, moderately slow footed, above average arm strength, great size, toughness and leadership.

Take that for what it's worth, but I think Mr. Rivers has sealed his fate for this season with the holdout unless the Chargers drop to 0-10 and we get a preview for next season.

By the way, he did have very complimentary things to say about Jerricho Cotchery, the Jets 4th round pick.  Evidently he has the potential to be very productive possession-type receiver, not real fast but big with a great work ethic.

Not that it belongs here, but since it is here... Cotchery has had a very impressive training camp so far according to coaches and media types. He'll be the replacement for Chrebet when he's done, although I don't know how much fantasy value he'll have sitting behind SMoss and McCareins.
