News: Week 16 Analysis vs. the Green Bay Packers

Fantasy Football Slant:
It's a one game season for the NFC Norris title on Christmas Eve.  The Vikings hold all the tie breakers on the Packers, except the one that matters; head to head record.  They can fix that with a win, nulling out their last second FG loss they suffered at Lambeau.  Green Bay is coming off an embarrassing showing that erased the last "stupid Lambeau fact" they held, the asinine Favre-at-home-when-temp-is-below-34-degrees streak.  They've already clinched a playoff spot, so maybe, just maybe they look past this one a bit.   But don't count on it.   The Viking-Packer rivalry has become one of the best in football over the last decade.  This one should be no different.

When the Packers have the ball...
The Viking D has not shown an ability to stop a herd of turtles, let alone a high octane offense headed by one of the best QBs ever.  In fact, they made Joey Harrington look Favre-esque last week, so the real thing is going to be a lot less fun this Friday.  Green Bay can pick their poison.  Deep crossing routes to Walker; screens to Green or Davenport; jump fades to Walker in the RZ; simple power running game with Green;  all these should be quite effective.  The Vikes have 2 rays of hope with Winfield returning from an ankle sprain, and Ferguson still recovering from a viscous clothesline hit last Sunday.  Neither sheds much light on the dark abyss that is Viking defensive fantasy players though.  If you've got them on your team, your probably not in the playoffs anyway, but if a gun were put to this writer's head, I'd start either Udeze or Williams in the hope of a sack...A sack, not multiple.

When the Vikings have the ball...
The Green Bay D has been almost as putrid as the Vikings D; however, they had success heavily blitzing Minnesota the first time around.  Expect a lot of that again this week.  Bryant McKinnie has been bothered by back spasms and was actually taken out for some of last weeks win vs. Detroit.  Nat Dorsey filled in, but only adequately.   This week, KGB is on that end, so McKinnie is vital.  If McKinnie needs help from an RB or TE to handle KGB, the Packers will be breathing down CPepp's neck all day.  The Packer secondary, for all their bravado and chest thumping...sucks!  Moss is back to form, Burleson has become a fantastic #2 complement, and the Vikings found a diamond in the rough with Wiggins.  The passing game is where the Vikings will win this one, if they do.  Expect some split time between Smith & Bennett, and with Bennett probably fitting this week's game plan a bit better, he's probably going to get more touches.  The Vikings opened with a screen to Bennett last week, but GB LB Barnett sniffs those out well, so don't expect a lot of receiving yards for either RB this week.   In the end, the Vikings offense has shown a tendency to stall in games, leaving 3 drives on the field, and that will be their downfall this week.

Key Matchups
McKinnie vs KGB
If McKinnie controls him, there's going to be a lot of time for CPepp, Moss & Burleson to shred the Pack.  If KGB goes off for 2 sacks in the first half, and causes pressure, hurries or scrambles, it will stifle the Viking passing game.  With Hunt and Jackson stuffing the run, there's not going to be a lot up the middle for the Vikings to alleviate the pass rush.  Bennett off tackle is the best chance at getting the running game going, but that is going to be hard to play action off of.  The only really good option for the Vikings is to handle KGB.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper -  pa. yds & 3TDs,  25 ru. yds  1 INT, 1 FUMB (2 stars)
Michael Bennett -  55 ru. yds, 25 rec. yds (1 stars)
Onterrio Smith -   25 ru. yds, 10 rec. yds (0 stars)
Moe Williams - 20 ru. yds, 15 rec. yds (0 stars)
Randy Moss -  85 rec. yds & 1 TD  (4 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 45 rec. yds (1 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 10 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 65 rec. yds  & 1TD (3 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 40 rec. yds. & 1TD (0 stars)
Morton Andersen - 3 XP + 1 FG (2 stars)
D/ST - 1 sacks, 1 INT, 31 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:    - 24   - 31

News: Week 15 analysis vs. Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Football Slant:
A quick edition this week.  The Vikings absolutely must win this week at Detroit.  Technically, this is not a must win, but a loss to a third consecutive inferior team would be a death blow the teams ego.

The Lions are stiff vs. the run.  They can be passed on; however, so expect CPepp & crew to have a lot of success this week.  Moss looked better last week and showed some downfield ability that has been missing.  Look for a good game from him and Burleson to get in on a good game as well.

The Viking D has been terrible the last few weeks.  A string of good RBs has really exposed them.   Kevin Jones is a good RB, not great, but good.  He should have a good day this week.  Harrington starts again and will probably be OK, but nothing stellar.   Roy Williams is a must start as Winfield is hurt and, though he may play, will not be 100%.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 335 pa. yds & 3 TDs,  25 ru. yds  (4 stars)
Onterrio Smith - 60 ru. yds, 30 rec. yds  (1 stars)
Michael Bennett - 35 ru. yds, 15 rec. yds  (1 stars)
Moe Williams - 15 ru. yds (0 stars)
Randy Moss - 115 rec. yds & 2 TD (4 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 50 rec. yds (1 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 20 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 65 rec. yds & 1 TD (3 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 40 rec. yds (1 stars)
Morton Andersen - 3 XP + 2 FG (3 stars)
D/ST - 2 sacks, 1 INT, 23 pts allowed. (1 stars)

Final:     - 27     - 23

News: Week 14 analysis.

Fantasy Football Slant:
First off, apologies for the late edition this week.  The Vikings laid a major egg in Chicago last week and need to take care of business at home to make the playoffs.   The Seahawks have almost filled up a carton of eggs so far this year, including the latest double-yoker on MNF last week.  At first, this would appear to be a 60-point game, but neither team is stopping the run well, so it's possible the game is done in 2:45, with a 28-24 score.  But wait!  Neither team can stop the pass either, so add another 28-24 and we've got a 70+ point game!

When the Seahawks have the ball...
Expect Zander to have a big day.  Hass's receivers (excluding Rice) are dropping everything like they're Elton John with the soap in prison.  The 5 TD first half debacle Zander put up a couple years ago is still fresh on Viking's minds.  The string of 100+ RBs vs the Vikings is another factor pointing to Zander having a big day.  He's a streaky back that hasn't "gone off" like he usually does.  This week he will.   Hass will still get 1-2 TDs, but Zander will get 2, maybe 3.  After last week's performance though, there is absolutely no way you can consider starting anything related to the Viking defense.

When the Vikings have the ball...
The Seahawks are banged up bigtime on D.  Both D Line and LBs are starting backups, so Onterrio Smith should have a nice day.  There's more and more rumblings out of Winter Park that Bennett will get more opportunities this week.  Spot duty with plays made for him are the most likely scenario, rather than a series or two.  But that still cuts into Smiths value.   Moe Williams has the flu and probably won't be a major factor, so that's at least good news for you Smith owners.  Moss is also going to cut back to below 50 plays to try and make him more effective.   See earlier updates for more on that.  The Vikings got away from the run last week, and Tice mentioned his displeasure with that fact a couple times this week.  So expect Smith and Bennett to get their chances.

Key Matchups
Viking LBs vs. Zander
If the Vikings want to win this one, they'll have to take away Zander, or at least hold him to 75-80 yards.  If Zander goes for 140, this one will be over.   Fred Taylor went for 140 a couple weeks ago in a Viking win, but Jacksonville didn't have the passing game Seattle does.   If Zander goes off early and establishes play action, it'll be a long day for the Vikings.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 285 pa. yds & 4 TDs,  25 ru. yds  (5 stars)
Onterrio Smith - 125 ru. yds & 1TD, 20 rec. yds & 1TD (3 stars)
Michael Bennett - 15 ru. yds, 55 rec. yds  (1 stars)
Moe Williams - zilch (0 stars)
Randy Moss - 35 rec. yds & 1 TD (3 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 50 rec. yds (1 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 20 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 65 rec. yds & 1 TD (3 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 40 rec. yds & 1 TD (3 stars)
Morton Andersen - 5 XP + 1 FG (3 stars)
D/ST - 2 sacks, 34 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:     - 38   - 34

News: Moss to cut back....again.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Moss is no threat at all on the field right now.  When healthy, he's commanding doubles constantly and triples in goal line situations.  Right now, he couldn't command a cocker spaniel.  Moss only has 1 TD and 8 receptions since returning from his hammy injury that still lingers.  With the once vaunted/since putrid Seattle D next on the schedule, one has to keep Moss in the lineup, but don't expect more than  4 for 30 and a possible TD.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 15:39 on Fri Dec 3rd 2004

News: Winfield will miss a month.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikes top defensive player will miss several weeks with a high ankle sprain.  This forces Derek Ross and Terrence Shaw into action as nickel and base starters respectively.  Last week's "emergency" recommendation of the Viking defense was a horrible misread.  Even the "experts" can get fooled once in a while, and that was a case on point.   With the latest injury to the Viking secondary, and the Seahawks coming to town, it's recommended you run as fast as you can to the keyboard and dump any Viking player without a QB, WR or RB designation at their position.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 15:32 on Thu Dec 9 2004

News: Turnovers,Bears dash Viking's 1st place hopes

Fantasy Football Slant:
The matchup in week 13 was a major slugfest as advertised.  The Vikings were beaten by a career 3rd string QB, and the worst offense in the NFL.  Onterrio Smith was effective running the ball, but the Vikings got away from it very early.   With the game at a 3 point differential, and the Vikings sitting 1st&Goal on the 3 yard line, Linehan called for passes.  The result was a spectacular INT by Urlacher and a missed opportunity.  The players played poorly, but the loss was more attributable to poor coaching.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 14:10 on Fri Dec 3rd 2004

News: Week 13 Analysis vs. the Chicago Bears

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings and Bears write another chapter in their storied rivalry this week at Soldier Field.  The Vikings are riding high off a 2 game win streak.  The Bears are just trying to keep their jocks from riding high as they watch their offense look as bad as an NFL offense can.  Insult is added to injury as their new defensive start, Ogunleye, has been downgraded to doubtful and will probably not play.  The Bears do get Urlacher back a couple weeks early to help offset the loss.  It won't matter in the end though, as the Vikings will be way too much for the Bears anemic offense to keep pace with.

When the Bears have the ball...
The Bears brought Jeff George out of the cedar chest to try and find anyone that can run an offense for them.  Hutchinson will probably get the start though, which is actually better news for the Viking D.  Thomas Jones had 30 touches in the first meeting this year and the same will probably hold true this week.  Expect a decent day from Jones, but the rest of the Bears offense will struggle.  The Viking D is playing better and could be used in a pinch this week.  Russell and Winfield are good INT gambles, and the Bears banged up OLine will almost certainly yield multiple sacks.  The best bets are Johnstone, Williams and Udeze.

When the Vikings have the ball...
With Ogunleye out, the Vikings will find running the ball a bit easier.  Urlacher is being rushed back from injury, so it's uncertain how effective he can be.  The Bears have also shuffled their secondary for this game, moving McQuarters to FS and starting Tillman at CB.  All this flux spells trouble for the Bears D vs. a Viking offense that is clicking well.  OSmith is getting most of the touches this week after being named the clearcut starter.  He should have a nice game, but with Urlacher in, it's hard to predict more than 75 + 1TD.  Moss didn't go deep too much vs. the Jags last week, but according to team sources, he's as close to 100% as possible and has looked good in practice.  Expect Moss and Burleson to have a great duo game this week.  Robinson is a wildcard vs. his old team, but has hit a wall of sorts with his foot injury.  Hard to predict what the return to Soldier will do for him.

Key Matchups
Burleson vs. Tillman
McQuarters was moved to FS almost certainly to contain Moss with doubles.  Burleson should get some good man matchups to exploit.  If the Bears try to roll back to cover 2, Wiggins and Smith should have a field day.  If Burleson can have success early, it could force the Bears into react mode and open the Vikings O wide open.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 290 pa. yds & 3 TDs,  25 ru. yds (4 stars)
Onterrio Smith - 75 ru. yds, 35 rec. yds & 1TD (3 stars)
Moe Williams - 25 ru. yds, 15 rec. yds (1 stars)
Randy Moss - 105 rec. yds & 1 TD (5 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 20 rec. yds & 1 TD(3 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 10 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 65 rec. yds (3 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 40 rec. yds (1 stars)
Morton Andersen - 3 XP + 2 FG (3 stars)
D/ST - 3 sacks, 1 INT, 16 pts allowed. (2 stars)

Final:     - 27   - 16

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 8:11 on Wed Dec 1 2004

News: Onterrio Smith promoted to starter.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings finally abandoned the RBBC approach and will give Onterrio Smith most of the carries.  Mewelde Moore had already fallen off most rosters, or should have.  Michael Bennett will be the next tatoo parlor visitor to request the WW removed from his arse.  Expect him to become available in most leagues, and don't bother picking him up.   Unless you want to bet on an injury to Smith, there's no reason to keep him, and Smith doesn't have a prolific injury history.  This move makes Smith a solid #2 RB.  The Vikings give Moe Williams too many RZ chances to make OSmith a #1.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 8:04 on Wed Dec 1 2004

News: Vikings D becoming a factor?

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings Defense has shown some life in the last couple weeks, helping the Purple notch 2 victories.   Does this elevate Minnesota from a complete non-fantasy-factor defensively?   No.  Harrington has been playing terribly and will lose his job to McMahon, and Fred Taylor still put up 140+ on the Vikes, though he still couldn't find paydirt.  The Vikes remain a spot start at best.  As circumstance would have it though, this week vs. Chicago could just be that spot!

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 10:40 on Fri Nov 19 2004

News: Week 11 Analysis vs. the Motor City Kitties

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Lions have come back to earth, and the Vikings have also struggled, so this game has a lot less marquee flash than maybe a month ago.  The Lions offense has been hurt by injuries, so they'll need a ball controlled game to be able to pull this one off.   The Vikings shouldn't need more than a solid performance to secure a win.

When the Lions have the ball...
The Lion's Kevin Jones will try to follow Edge, Ahman & Tiki from the last 3 weeks.  If Jones can get 90+ and Harrington doesn't turnover the ball, the Lions have a chance in this one.  Jones makes a good start as he'll see enough touches to be successful.  The Lions receivers are hurting, and Reggie Swinton might be forced into the starting lineup.   As such, Williams will be the only real target and should see plenty of action.   The Lions will probably have trouble scoring more than 17, so the Viking D makes a very average start this week.  The IDPers shouldn't look to the DLine for any sacks, but the secondary may yield an INT.

When the Vikings have the ball...
The Lions are still somewhat respectable vs. the run, having only given up 7 TDs and only 4 20+ yd plays.   If OSmith is going to have a big day, it will take a commitment to the run by Linehan.   But a 140+ combined yards isn't out of the question.  Wiggins should be poised for another big game as well.   The Vikings shouldn't be too afraid of the Lions offense, so ball control won't be too much of a focus.  Moss hasn't been entirely ruled out, but don't hold out hope.  The Vikings should still be 2 over .500 after this game, with a healthy Moss to finish the season.

Key Matchups
Robinson vs. Bryant
Burleson probably draws Bly for most of the game, pitting  Robinson vs Bryant.  This favors Robinson, if he can get healthy enough to take advantage.   Bly will probably do a good job vs Burleson, so Robinson needs to give CPepp a target, or the vertical game could be stifled.   Robinson is the key to sealing this victory.

Viking Kick Coverage vs Drummond
Short fields killed the Vikings vs. the Giants.  They need to make sure they don't put their defense in similar situations this week.  Drummond was awesome vs. Jacksonville last week, and needs to be contained.   The Lions have trouble putting together big, sustained drives, so longer fields will benefit the Vikings.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 275 pa. yds & 2TDs,  35 ru. yds  (3 stars)
Michael Bennett -  15 rec. yds (0 stars)
Onterrio Smith -   90 ru. yds & 1TD, 45 rec. yds (3 stars)
Moe Williams - 10 ru. yds, 15 rec. yds (0 stars)
Mewelde Moore - no longer a factor (0 stars)
Randy Moss -  (0 stars)
Marcus Robinson -75 rec. yds & 1TD (4 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 25 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 55 rec. yds  (2 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 45 rec. yds. & 1TD (3 stars)
Morton Andersen - 3 XP + 2 FG (4 stars)
D/ST - 0 sacks, 1 INT, 17 pts allowed. (1 stars)

Final:    - 27   - 17

News: Moss doubtful.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Moss continues to try to get past the hammy injury   and will most likely sit vs. the Lions.   While Moss owners are undoubtedly bummin' due to the loss of their first rounder, the Vikings think they can win this one without him.  After 2 consecutive last minute FG losses to 2 of the better offensive teams in the league, they may be right.  Burleson continues to shine in his absence, though it's doubtful he's still available in your league.  But grab him if he is.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 13:20 on Wed Nov 17 2004

News: Week 10 review.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings have to be happy with the effort they gave on a short week sandwiched by road trips.   As expected, they fell behind early, and as predicted, came up short on the attempt to catch up.  Unexpected; however, was how close they made it, and the fact that the zebras stole this one right out from under Derek Ross & the Purple.

Culpepper showed exactly why the mouth-breathers need to sit down before they hurt themselves.  Too much "bench DC" talk going into this one, and he responded with 4 TDs!  Much more than predicted.  Wiggins had a great game again, and Burleson continues to improve.

Don't be suprised to see Burleson starting opposite Moss when he returns.  Nate is earning that right with his play the last 2 games.

In all, a tough loss to the Pack, but Viking faithful, and Viking owners have to be happy with the comeback ability the team has shown lately.  The schedule going forward favors the Vikings, so expect a lot more good than bad from your Viking players the rest of the year.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:40 on Sat Nov 13 2004

News: Bennett getting the start vs. the Packers

Fantasy Football Slant:
It may turn some heads to see Bennett getting the start.  According to Tice, it's due to Smith's bruised shoulder.   It's probably more due to Bennett's need for some love and confidence.  Expect Smith to see a lot of the touches and probably to play better than Bennett.  Diggs, Jackson and Sharper are decent tacklers and Smith is better at breaking them; Bennett needs the open space and probably won't find it vs. the Packers.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 8:40 on Sat Nov 13 2004

News:Week 10 Analysis vs. the REVILED Green Bay Packers

Fantasy Football Slant:
The assignment doesn't get any easier for the Viking D this week as they go to Lambeau Field.  Green Bay appears to have righted the ship offensively and defensively.  They've scored 35+ the last 3 games, and have only allowed an average of 14 in that time.  For the second straight year, the Packers get a bye in front of the Vikings game, and the Vikings have a short week.  Expect GB to be very prepared and crisp in this one.  The Vikes will have to be just as sharp or they'll find themselves down 14 quickly.  In the end, I don't think they will be, and playing catch-up all game, they eventually fall short in this one.

When the Packers have the ball...
Ahman Green should be licking his chops after seeing Tiki and Edge shred the Vikings for 101 & 123 respectively.  But this is a border battle for pride and bragging rights in the NFC Norris, so keeping the score low isn't a priority.  Unless Favre's hand injury is worse than advertised, expect a very balanced attack between Favre and Green.  Ahman will end up with a combined 150 to 185 and 2 TDs, while Favre will score similar numbers to the last 3 weeks;  about 265 and 2 TDs.   This make the Viking unit unstartable  .   The Packers have only given up 5 sacks this season, so don't expect pressure to create too many INTs.   As such, there aren't any IDPers to be found on the Purple side in this one.

When the Vikings have the ball...
The Vikings are going to have to get Onterrio Smith rolling.  They haven't been able to open up a deep threat without Moss, but if Smith can run effectively to start the game, it could spring Robinson loose for a couple big gains.  Grady Jackson and Darren Sharper are back in the lineup, making it much tougher to run on GB, so don't expect huge numbers.   Modest success early should open up some controlled passing and allow clock sustaining drives into the RZ.  It will be imperative the Vikings get 7 when in the RZ, so expect Robinson and Wiggins to get major looks there.  Bennett will see looks as a change of pace, but not much.  Moe Williams, normally seeing some RZ looks, probably only gets them if the Vikings find themselves inside the 5, as there's enough confidence in Smith from the 5 on out.

Key Matchups
Nate Burleson vs. Michael Hawthorne
Harris will probably be able to control Robinson for much of the game, so Burleson must find a way to give CPepp a target.  Campbell has been a disappointment as a slot receiver, and if the Vikings are forced to check down to TE/RB passes as they have the last 2 weeks, they'll become too predictable and bog down.  Burleson needs to keep the 10-15 yard play attainable vs. Hawthorne.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 215 pa. yds & 2TDs,  25 ru. yds, 2 INT (2 stars)
Michael Bennett -  10 rec. yds (0 stars)
Onterrio Smith -   80 ru. yds, 35 rec. yds & 1 TD (0 stars)
Moe Williams - 20 ru. yds  (0 stars)
Mewelde Moore - no longer a factor (0 stars)
Randy Moss -   (0 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 55 rec. yds  (1 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 15 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 65 rec. yds  (2 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 35 rec. yds. & 1 TD (3 stars)
Morton Andersen - 2 XP + 2 FG (2 stars)
D/ST - 0 sacks, 1 INT, 31 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:    - 20    - 31

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 19:40 on Fri Nov 5 2004

News: It's official: No Moss again this week for Minnesota.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Viking fans and Moss owners will have to suffer another week without their superstar.  Moss is officially out again this week.  The timing couldn't be worse, as most owners probably looked at the schedule, saw Moss vs. IND & GB, and jumped for joy in expectation of 2 20 pt weeks.   It's also obvious that the Viking offense is nowhere near as potent without Moss.   Culpepper didn't top 200 yards vs. a terrible Colts D, and the unit as a whole only put up 28 pts to a team that had just given up 56.  Viking owners will have to temper their expectations until Moss returns.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 19:40 on Fri Nov 5 2004

News: MRI reveals slight tear to Moss' hammy

Fantasy Football Slant:
Terrible news for Moss owners who might have foolishly held out hope he'd start this week.  Still, it's hard to believe he wouldn't be suited up and ready vs. the Packers.  Moss loves going into Lambeau.  Keep an eye on this report, as it wouldn't be suprising to see him ready by Week 10.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 19:40 on Fri Nov 5 2004

News: Week 9 Analysis vs. the Indianapolis Colts

Fantasy Football Slant:
Another Monday Night Football appearance for the Vikings this week as they travel to Indy.  The Colts have lost 2 in a row and will be hungry to show they are still a top team in the AFC.  The Vikings want to show last weeks embarrassment at the hands of the Giants was a one week aberration.  That may be tough to do as 2 major offensive weapons, Moss and Moore, will most likely not dress this week.   In addition, Robinson has a sprained foot and will play with a prosthetic to help alleviate stress on the foot.  That leaves a lot of pressure on Burleson & Campbell to carry the wideout duties.   If there's any bright spot, it's the return of O-whereIsMyBong-Smith.  Expect to see him split time with Bennett; and of course, there's always the TD-Vulture, Moe Williams.

When the Colts have the ball...
The Viking coaches feel their D played better than the score would indicate last week, citing the short fields they were handed by the offensive TOs and blocked punt.  That may be true,  but this Colts offense doesn't need a short field to kill you, so this week the only excuse will be, "They were better than us.".  The Colts should be able to do just about anything they want offensively.  With last weeks performance in mind, I don't expect the Colts to respect the tattered Viking offense, so I don't expect them to try to pound Edge as a ball control strategy.   They may do it anyway though, just because it's going to be successful.  Peyton should be able to systematically execute the Colt offense to the tune of 3-4 TD passes.  The Viking D Line is starting to play well and may get some pressure, but Peyton is quick to release and probably won't get sacked more than once.  Harrison, Wayne & Stokely are all better than their matchups, so at the risk of sounding redundant, no Viking D players warrant a start this week.

When the Vikings have the ball...
The Vikings need Moss at 100% vs the Packers next week, so they will most likely shut him down completely for this one.   A short week between 2 road games just isn't enough time to get any treatment, so it just makes sense to sit him.  Moore is still nursing a sprained ankle, but has also lost favor after a couple of poor decisions in the NYG game.  With OSmith returning, and Bennett's showing during last week's garbage time, Moore won't see much action in this one.  The Colts D is just plain bad.  This game is probably going to see the Vikings scoring 24-27 points, but they're never going to be in it.  Burleson makes a nice #3, but he's no #1.  Robinson will probably go, but he has never played well hurt.   Don't expect much out of him.  All this adds up to a pretty bad passing day for the Vikings.   Luckily, the Colts are equally bad vs. the run.  I expect both Bennett and Smith to put together a respectable first half on the ground, but the second half will see the Vikings behind too far to run the ball consistently.  With Dungy's Cover 2 D in effect, the forced passing game will probably yield some yards, but expect a couple picks as well.

Key Matchups
Viking DLine vs. Edgerin James
It's hard to pinpoint a key matchup in this one.   If the Vikings have any hope of winning this game, it's to stop Edgerin early, and get pressure on Manning.   Peyton will throw picks of pressured enough.  The linchpin to the Viking win in this one is the D Line.

Forecast

News: Moss might miss MNF.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Whether it's posturing, deception or truly a wait and see situation, word out of Winter Park (Viking HQ) has Moss sitting this week @ IND.  It makes sense, as the next week @ GB is much more important.  But with Robinson nursing a sprained foot, the entire Viking offense becomes suspect for what originally looked like a game that might yeild 4 or 5 fantasy starters.  Stay tuned...

News: Week 8 Review

Fantasy Football Slant:
It probably wasn't too hard to detect the trepidation about the Giants game when you read the Week 8 Analysis.  As it turns out, that trepidation turned to stomach turning gore on Sunday.  Much of the analysis, as it turns out, was spot on:
Tiki Barber shredded the Viking defense
The already marginal Viking LBs probably played their worst game of the season.  Several play action plays had Roanall Smith and Dont. Thomas completely out of position.  However, their inability to stop Barber running up the middle was even more glaring than expected.
The Viking DLine got some nice pressure on Warner to handle the Giants passing game
They were able to get a lot of pressure on Warner.  The Giants passing game was not what hurt the Vikes.
Shockey was too much for the Vikings to handle
Some great catches by the Mouth of the East, and probably should've had a score.

The circumstances unforseen turned out to be the poor play the Vikings offense.  Some credit is certainly due the Giants D; safety Wilson played a great game, but passes dropped and poorly thrown were the main reason for the Viking futility.  Moss continued to be a non-factor, and is not much of a decoy anymore.  There's already talk of sitting him completely until he's back 100%, so stay tuned if you're a Moss owner.

Another unpredicted aspect was Moore's sprained ankle, though injuries are always a wildcard.  Bennett came in and performed well in relief.  Moore, if healthy, will still start vs. IND on MNF, but expect all the other Minny RBs (OSmith, Moe & Bennett) to get touches next week.

The Key Matchup was certainly dominated by Strahan.  He walked down the line on several running plays away from him and made the play.  He, Hand, Robbins & Wilson were huge defensively for the Giants.

Finally, should you be worried if you're a CPepp owner?  Was it time to trade him last week?   Cool your jets, oh over-reactant one!   Yes, CPepp had a bad game, but all the best QBs in the league will do so at least once this season.  He remains an every week starter and probably bounces back with a 4TD game next week vs. the putrid Colt D.

A poor loss at home vs. a team that seems to have the Vikings # the last 4 years, but the team seems to be shaking it off, and so should Viking owners.  Moss owners are the only ones that need to be a bit worried, and hopefully that hammy heals soon.

News: Week 8 Analysis vs. the New York Giants

Fantasy Football Slant:
This week the suprising G-Men come to the Metrodome to try to repeat what they did last year, when they knocked off the favored Vikings on the road.  The Giants were expected to occupy the cellar in the NFC East, but have thus far been much more effective offensively than expected.  They'll need to continue that productivity if they plan on having any success this Sunday.  The Vikings defense had their best showing of the year last week, and will hope to slow down the Giants enough to give their offense breathing room and not require 35 points for a win.

When the Giants have the ball...
Three words...Tiki, Tiki & Tiki.  Expect a lot from Barber this week.  Play action should be hugely successful once Barber runs the ball, which you can expect him to do well.  Toomer and Hilliard have decent matchups, but Shockey will be wide open most of the day off play action.  None of the Viking LBs is good in pass coverage and a top flight TE like Shockey should do some serious damage.  The Giants will score too much to make any Viking D, IDP or otherwise, worthy of any fantasy start.  Expect the Vikings to blitz more than they have so far this year as young players are beginning to understand assignments better.  Warner may have some trouble if the Vikings can get pressure, but the Giants O-Line has been up to the task so far this year, so don't expect much more than 2 sacks and maybe an INT.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Expect a lot of Viking RB touches this week.  The Giants, while not completely soft, are not very tough vs. the run.  They are tougher vs. the pass, and are very aggressive in coverage, snagging 8 INTs already this year.  The Vikings don't want to force without Moss at 100%, so Moore should see a nice day.  Moe will vulture at the goalline as usual.  Bennett will get a few more touches this week, but unless he rips off at a 20 yd/attempt average, don't expect him to eat into Moore's game too much.  Moss is back in the lineup, but don't expect a major day.  It wouldn't be suprising at all to only see Moss in on 3rd down and goal line packages.  The Vikings were only 2 for 11 on 3rd down last week and Moss can help with that.  With the Giants at a +9 TO differential, it will be key for the Vikings to take care of the ball, and control the clock.

Key Matchups
Dorsey vs Strahan
Rookie Nat Dorsey gets another baptism by fire this week when he has to take on Strahan.  Strahan has had some great games vs the Vikings and is surely licking his chops at the chance to notch up another multiple sack game.  If Strahan gets pressure, it's likely to result in an INT from the ball-hawking Giants D, so it's vital that Dorsey contain him.  Most likely, Moore and/or Berton will be used to chip on Strahan to help Dorsey out.  This will hurt Moore's receiving #s this week.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 270 pa. yds & 3TDs,  25 ru. yds  1 INT (4 stars)
Michael Bennett -  15 ru. yds (0 stars)
Onterrio Smith -   (0 stars)
Moe Williams - 20 ru. yds (0 stars)
Mewelde Moore - 115 ru. yds, 30 rec. yds. (3 stars)
Randy Moss -  30 rec. yds & 1TD (2 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 85 rec. yds & 1TD (4 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 25 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 75 rec. yds  (2 stars)
Jermaine Wiggins - 25 rec. yds. & 1TD (3 stars)
Morton Andersen - 3 XP + 2 FG (4 stars)
D/ST - 2 sacks, 24 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:    - 27   - 24

News: Bennett back, so what!?

Fantasy Football Slant:
Bennett was certainly dissappointed by his lack of opps this week, but who can blame Tice for sticking with Moore?  Bennett was inserted a couple different times, but the lack of continuity caused some late plays and confusion on the field, so Tice nixed the substitution plan and stuck with Moore.  Tice has now said Bennett will "have to earn his way back" to the starting lineup.  That may include returning kicks, according to Tice.  Debate the question "Should a player lose his job due to injury?" as you will, but you simply cannot take a player off the field who is putting up 600+ yards of offense in 3 weeks for a player who can't even stay on the field.  If you've got Bennett, and can stash him for at least 2 more weeks, do so.  But once OSmith returns from his suspension, the Viking RB core is going to be fantasy hell.

News: Week 7 Recap

Fantasy Football Slant:
Hopefully many followed the advice layed out in the forecast.  It was recommended Moss sit the fantasy rosters this week, as his involvement was going to be minimal if any.  That's exactly what happened.

The rest of the game played out significantly better for Viking fans than predicted.  The Vikes didn't throw nearly as much as forecasted, CPepp ending the game with only 1 TD & 183yds.  That's because Moore was so effective running the ball.  He chalked up 138 yds, but lost his TD to Moe as predicted.

The most glaring stat was 3rd down conversions, 2 for 11.  The loss of Moss was most felt on 3rd down.

Was the Viking D a suprise?!  Maybe the standard footer on the D will have to be revisited!   Then again, maybe not.  TEN abandoned their run game way too early.  Brown had 30 yds in the 1st Qtr, and only got 2 attempts in the 2nd Qtr.  The score was still 3-3 and then 3-10, yet TEN continued to let Volek throw terribly. That left an effective run game, at least in the 1st Qtr, with no chance to help out the D and keep CPepp off the field.

Burleson took advantage of his matchup, and got the TD love as well.  MRob continues to delight his believers.  Campbell may officially be off this forecaster's sleeper pick list!

RB-wise, Moe is back in true form, stealing the TDs inside the 15 yard line.  While Moore is making a wonderful ydg start, he isn't getting the TDs, which hurts him if you're in a scoring league.  Bennett's return was nothing to speak of, and may not be for the foreseeable future!  See further updates for Bennett's role going forward.

Another win.  A should-win that was.

News: Week 7 Analysis vs. the Tennessee Titans

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings will have to make due without the most effective offensive weapon in the NFL this week.  Moss has a strained hammy, as most of you know, and is likely to sit this week out.  The white-hot CPepp is carrying this team right now, and the Vikings are confident they can do to the Titans what they did to New Orleans in the second half last week.  A half in which Moss wasn't even dressed, saw the Vikings chalk up an easy 17 points.  The Titans are coming off somewhat of a letdown at home to the Texans after a complete dismantling of the Packers at Lambeau.  They should be crunked up for a win as this is as much of a must win as a week 7 game can be for the Titans.

When the Titans have the ball...
The only chance Tennessee has this week is to keep CPepp off the field.  Look for a lot of Chris Brown.  The Vikings rank mid-pack vs. the run, but are more susceptible than it would appear.  Brown should have some success, and open up the passing game for McNair.  Still, the Titans know they can't match the Vikings blow for blow, so the run will be vital to their success.  There aren't really any Vikings, as a unit or IDP, that are worthy of a roster spot right now, let alone a start this week.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Mewelde Moore continues to blow away any expectations and perform to a very high level.  He starts again this week, and should have some good runs vs TEN.  Some interesting stats to note:  1) TEN ranks top 15 vs. the run, but has allowed a league high 7 runs > 20 yards, & 2) TEN only has 9 sacks this season.  It appears if Mewelde can continue to break tackles at the line and get to the secondary, he could break off a couple long ones.  And it looks like CPepp could have all the time he wants when the Vikes do pass.  That doesn't bode well at all for the struggling TEN secondary.  Burleson will get a matchup vs. maligned Andre Dyson. He should be able to eat that matchup alive and have a big day.  Don't expect too many scores though, as Moe, Robinson and Wiggins have been dominating those looks in the Viking RZ gameplan.  Expect an above average rushing day for Mewelde opening up an effective passing game for MRob, Burleson and Wiggins.   Kelly Campbell, as you may have noticed, is a favorite sleeper pick.  We're picking a long bomb completion for 6 this week.

Key Matchups
Moore vs TEN D
Once again, Burleson draws the weaker corner and should be able to take care of Dyson.  If Mewelde is successful, Burleson could have another 100+ day.  If TEN does a good job vs Mewelde, Burleson will be limited a bit more.  He should be able to dominate his matchup and get some excellent 3rd down opps.   But the true linchpin is Moore and the running game.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 335 pa. yds & 3TDs,  45 ru. Yds  (4 stars)
Michael Bennett -  15 ru. yards, 35 rec. yards (0 stars)
Onterrio Smith -   (0 stars)
Moe Williams - 20 ru. yards & 1 TD (0 stars)
Mewelde Moore - 75 ru. Yards, 40 rec. yds. (3 stars)
Randy Moss -   (0 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 85 rec. yds & 1TD (4 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 45 rec. yds & 1 TD(1 stars)
Nate Burleson - 75 rec. yds  (2 star)
Jermaine Wiggins - 65 rec. yds. & 1 TD
Morton Andersen - 4 XP + 2 FG (4 stars)
D/ST - 3 sacks, 27 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:     - 34   - 27

News: To Moss or not to Moss, that is the question.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Do I start Moss this week?   Is Moss going this week?   Will Moss play?   I've only fielded this question about a dozen times this week, and I'll share with all of you my inside track opinion.....maybe.  Tice, usually not wont to play the mind games and media two-step, has been unusually coy about the status of his prize weapon this week.   Latest word has Moss running on a treadmill with no soreness.  Does that mean start him?   Who knows!?  Unfortunately, you'll be stuck with the gametime decision bug.  If you're in a league that lets you promote/bench players up to 15 mins before kickoff, then watch NFL Countdown and hope Mort kicks in with his last minute news.  If not, go with this:  the Vikings feel they can beat TEN without Moss.  They feel comfortable against a weaker TEN D that can be torched by the pass.  Tice was leaning toward sitting him earlier this week to make sure he heals fully for MNF vs INDY week 9.  I think that's the course he'll take come Sunday.   If you can wait for last minute news, do so and start if you get lucky.  Otherwise, sit him and find a replacement.

News: Moore gets even more responsibility this week.

Fantasy Football Slant:
In addition to another start at RB for the superpowered-Viking offense, Mewelde Moore will get kick return duties this week as well.  He already makes a #1- or #2+ RB start, but if you get return yards, he's got an added bonus for you.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 10:20 on Tue Oct 19 2004

News: Moss diagnosed with "significant strain".

Fantasy Football Slant:
Moss plans to sit all week.  He'll skip practice Wed., Thurs. & Fri., then test the hammy in a closed door practice/walkthrough on Saturday.  The closed door attribute raises the eyebrows a bit.  Tice is clearly making TEN plan for Moss.  The entire D scheme centers around stopping Moss on a usual Sunday, so this plan, in effect, forces TEN to put in 2 gameplans defensively.  Don't plan on seeing Moss Sunday.  He's essential to Minnesota's post season plans, so he's going to need to be fully healthly ASAP.  That means sitting him vs two weaker pass Ds the next couple weeks.  With Moore running the ball as effectively as he is, he's still opening up the passing looks for the WRs.  Wiggins return has also added another target for CPepp.  The Vikes will still put up 24+ w/o the NFLs #1 offensive weapon.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 1:39 on Mon Oct 18 2004

News: Week 6 Analysis.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings certainly ran the ball very effectively as predicted, but the "temper expectations" on the passing game was off!  The Vikings came out throwing and simply torched the Saints secondary who, even with McKenzie starting, simply had no business being on the field this Sunday night.  CPepp threw long, deep and often, racking up another 5 TDs!  He's certainly showing a better understanding of the field, the offense, the defensive recognition, and overall game management.   This kid is sick this year, and MVP sentiments are already circling in Minneapolis.

Hopefully some of you took the advice on Moore, MRob & Burleson as all performed as advertised.   Burleson shined and almost doubled the predicted output.  He didn't find paydirt as expected though, as Wiggins returned to the lineup with a bang!  With 2 TDs & 56 yards, Wiggins' tenure on the waiver wire Tuesday morning was a little longer than a Britney Spears wedding, but not much!

The most telling performance was the most unsung though.  This was far and away the best performance by the Viking OLine this year.  Losing Rosenthal had an effect, and rookie Nat Dorsey has taken a couple weeks to come around, but he's beginning to be a very servicable RT.

The D still has significant issues though.  The DLine simply cannot pressure the QB.  When Brooks and Carr can pick you apart, it doesn't bode well for playoff time when the likes of McNabb & Hasselbeck will do far worse.  The Vikings must find a way to get pressure.  Once the LB core gets a little more healthy, expect the D to start DOGging a bit more and creating a bit more havoc.

Overall, a good win.  And with 2 weaker Ds coming to the Metrodome the next couple weeks, expect Daunte to continue his inferno for a couple more weeks!

News: Moore shines again, earns another start in front of Bennett.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Mewelde Moore continues to impress, tallying 180+ yards vs. NO.  Tice has already announced he'll start vs. TEN next Sunday.  Moe Williams is back and did, in fact, steal some goal line carries vs. NO, but did not hit paydirt.  Bennett is scheduled to be available this week vs. TEN, but will not start.  Moore's start value takes a hit with Bennett returning and Moe's injuries behind him.  He may not be the best start this Sunday as it's looking for RBBC-like all the time starting this Sunday.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:05 on Mon Oct 18 2004

News: Moss likely to see "limited role" vs. Tennessee.

Fantasy Football Slant:
In his press conference today, Mike Tice said he "wouldn't be suprised to see Randy ready and up for some action in a limited role".   He emphasized concerns about the injury lingering and laid out a scenario in which Moss could sit this week, be part of a red zone package vs NYG, then be ready in full vs. IND on MNF Week 9.  It's still early, but so far news is not good for a full speed Moss next week.  This makes Burleson and Robinson excellent starts vs TEN.  Both performed very well vs NO when Moss went out.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 7:54 on Mon Oct 18 2004

News: Moss strains hamstring as Vikes roll.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Moss left the game in the second quarter Sunday night with what is being reported as a strained hammy.  Stay tuned for more info on his availability Sunday vs Tennessee.  Officially, he's questionable, and knowing how tough he is, expect him to suit up Sunday.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 6:54 on Fri Oct 15 2004

News: Bennett works out, should be ready for Titans next week.

Fantasy Football Slant:
This may be the last week you can pin down a single RB as the go to guy for the Vikings.  If Mewelde performs as well as expected this week, , he'll probably earn a split of the work with Bennett vs. TEN in Week 7.  So Week 8 vs NYG may be the week Bennett takes the backfield over completely.  But be careful when using Bennett as a #1, as he has the ultimate TD vulture in Moe Williams coming back from a calf strain.  The Viking playbook also fights his value, as:
    the draw (CPepp),
    the jump fade (Moss,MRob)
    the sneak (CPepp)
and the naked boot Z flat (CPepp option to Moss)
are all favorites deep in the red zone.   Bennett will usually get his TDs if he can take them in from outside the 15.  So temper expectations from the Bennett when he returns, as he warrants a #2 or a strong #3 on most rosters.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 14:00 on Thu Oct 14 2004

News: Week 6 Analysis vs. the Nawlin Saints

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings are preparing for what would appear to be another shoot-out this weekend in the Superdome when they visit the Saints.  Neither defense could scare a Pop Warner team, but don't necessarily expect another 60 point affair.  The Vikings have gotten healthier and their offense is clicking on all cylinders, but the Saints D has only allowed 4 passing TDs, so the run is where the Vikings want to make their hay.  This should be a win, and Vegas agrees, setting the line at -3.5 for the visiting team.

When the Saints have the ball...
The Deuce returned last week, but was clearly still shaking off some rust.   He managed 102 yards vs. a still stingy TB D, but fumbled twice.  Don't look for him to suffer the same effects this week vs. a D only good vs. the run on paper.   No one bothers to run on this D because passing is just too easy.  Joe Horn and Deuce make good starts this week and Stallworth is a nice sleeper too.  This next line could just be added into the footer of these updates:  There aren't really any Vikings, as a unit or IDP, that are worthy of a roster spot right now, let alone a start this week.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Mewelde's coming out party last week was a huge success.  He'll continue his productivity vs. an equally horrible Saints D.  The Saints rank at the bottom of both the passing and rushing D lists.  They've allowed a league high 9 rushing TDs, which bodes very well for Moore seeing paydirt Sunday.  Moss, Robinson & Burleson can all expect success this weekend if he can run as expected.  Don't expect much from Kelly Campbell, who is in the Tice doghouse right now.  The Saints pass D gets a major upgrade this weekend as McKenzie will move into the starting lineup.   McKenzie is very familiar with Moss, which probably doesn't matter.  But with Ambrose & McKenzie starting, and Fred Thomas moving to the nickel, the Saints may not be as susceptible as one would expect.

Key Matchups
Burleson vs Thomas
Ambrose doesn't have the speed to keep up with Robinson 1-on-1, so he's probably going to need safety help.  Moss will obviously get the other safety, so Burleson could see quite a bit of single coverage this week.  If he can run good routes and get himself open, something he sometimes falls asleep on, he could be poised for a big game.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 310 pa. yds & 2TDs,  45 ru. Yds  (5 stars)
Michael Bennett -    (0 starts)
Onterrio Smith -   (0 stars)
Moe Williams - 20 ru. yards (0 stars)
Mewelde Moore - 105 ru. Yards & 1TD, 60 rec. yds. (4 stars)
Randy Moss - 90 rec. yds & 1 TD (5 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 30 rec. yds & 1TD (2 stars)
Kelly Campbell - 25 rec. yds (0 stars)
Nate Burleson - 75 rec. yds & 1TD (3 star)
Richard Owens - 30 rec. yds (0 stars)  ** Wiggins may be back
Morton Andersen - 3 XP + 2 FG (4 stars)
D/ST - 1 sack, 1 INT, 24 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:     - 27   - 24

News: Vikings shuffle a couple roster spots.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Howry will hit IR this week.  Ryan Hoag, the 2003 Mr. Irrelevant will be signed to replace him.   Also 4th CB Rushen Jones reached an injury settlement and will be replaced by Derek Ross.   The only fantasy news to all this fodder, is Nate Burleson will be returning punts this week.   So if you've go Burleson and get return ydg, you may see an extra tick on the scoreboard.   Don't count on much though, as the porous Viking D doesn't force too many punts anyway.

Vikings punt returner and 5th receiver Keenan Howry suffered a sublexed shoulder and will miss significant time.   There is nothing significant about this injury though, as Howry is nowhere near any fantasy roster spot.  Cory Withrow, backup center, will probably miss Sunday's tilt vs. NO, but starter Matt Birk is ready to return.  All in all, the Vikings managed to finally get through a weekend without losing starters, and should get a whole lot healthier for NO on Sunday night.

News: Post Week 5 Analysis

Fantasy Football Slant:
This game played out pretty predictably.  The Vikings D should be pretty disappointed with their 4th quarter collapse.  As forecasted in the Game Analysis' Key Matchup, Viking LBs were key to stopping the short passing game, which Carr used quite effectively in the 4th.   The Texans won the battle, but the Vikings won the war.

Mewelde was even more effective than predicted, kudos to any GMs who followed the advice to grab him and start him.

Robinson was the biggest suprise.   Kelly Campbell's matchup looked good, but he suffered a calf injury and played little.  Robinson took advantage of the increased opps and chalked up a huge game!   While it may be prudent to grab him as a bye week fill-in, wait another week to see if this type of production will be coming reliably.   Burleson & Wiggins (who returns this week) will still dilute his looks going forward.

All in all, a good road win.   The "outdoors on grass" monkey has at least been eased somewhat.

News: Week 5 Analysis vs. the Houston Texans

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings travel to Houston to take on an improving Texans squad riding their first ever win streak!  The Texans took it to Oakland last week and shut down a good offense.  They'll need to do more to shut down Moss, CPepp and a great offense that's coming of a bye and has had plenty of time to devise a big day offensively.

When the Texans have the ball...
Houston is a fairly balanced offense.  They pass a bit more than half of the time; Carr has already racked up 107 attempts, second only to Manning in the AFC.  Fortunately, that plays right to the weakness of the Vikings D.  Carr should have a very nice day vs. a banged up LB core and an underperforming DLine.  The Viking secondary has held their own considering the lack of pressure, but the LBs are a weak spot, so Davis and Billy Miller make nice plays this week.  As usual, no Viking D member is worthy of an IDP roster spot right now,  let alone a start this week.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Minnesota will face a 3-4 this week for the first and only time this season.  With the injuries depleting the Viking RB core, Mewelde Moore gets the start and makes a pretty good sleeper play, as Houston ranks in the bottom 20% in rush defense.  Moe Williams will reportedly get the short yardage, goal line and probably 3rd down opps, but I think Moore shines early and earns those looks by the end of the game.  Moore is also a pretty good blocking back, so Culpepper should have enough time vs the blitzes Houston will throw at him.  Houston ranks in the top 15 in passing D, but has allowed 8 passing TDs.  Translation:  if the Vikings get close to the goal line, look for big 84 to get the call.  Expect a big day from Moss, and a couple big plays from Kelly Campbell.  Burleson and Robinson should get in on the action, with Robinson possibly getting a goal line look as well.

Key Matchups
Thomas/Smith vs Billy Miller
Miller has not been used much yet this season, but the matchup this week would seem to favor him.  He's going against inexperience at both SAM and MIKE this week.  If the Viking LBs can just cover up the intermediate routes a couple times and keep Carr from moving the chains even once, they should win this one by 10.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 370 pa. yds & 4 TDs,  25 ru. yds  1 INT (5 stars)
Onterrio Smith -   (0 stars)

Kelly Campbell - 85 rec. yds  & 1 TD (3 stars)

News: Moss leaves practice, but should play.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Moss tweaked his ankle before the season opener, but has played all year and, though apparently "slowed periodically" by the injury, remains the top fantasy wideout in the game.  Look for another huge week vs a HOU D allowing 2 receiving TDs/gm.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 5:00 on Wed Oct 6 2004

News: Hovan "injured", might not start.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The continued poor performance of Chris Hovan had Tice calling him out on MNF vs the Eagles.  He responded by disappearing for the game and the subsequent game vs. Chicago.  Apparently, Hovan suffered a kick to the back of his knee in Monday's practice and is officially questionable for this Sunday.  Expect Martin to split his plays, or even take the start this week.  In Tice's radio show this week, he dropped the Moore nugget (below), and let it be known the DLine will get a major shakeup this week.  If you're starting any Viking Dlinemen in IDP leagues, sit down before you hurt yourself.  After that, go to your computer and make sure none start this week!

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 4:54 on Wed Oct 6 2004

News: Rookie Moore gets the start vs. the Texans.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Williams is out, Moore is in.  According to Coach Tice, 4th round pick Mewelde Moore will get the start, with Larry Ned providing spot relief.  Williams is now projected to handle "3rd downs, short yardage and goal line situations".  Houston is giving up a lot of yards/gm; however, Moore makes a risky start.  He's a good blocker, so he should provide adequate room for CPepp to work, but temper yardage expectations and forget about scores.  Those will go to Williams or CPepp if they come on the ground.

News: Smith drops appeal, begins suspension.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Smith opted not to continue pursuing his appeal of a 4 game suspension, citing the "limbo effect" it had on him and his team.  Don't buy it!  The Vikings need him back for the Indianapolis game on MNF Nov 8th, and that's why they're dropping it now.  With Bennett's injuries piling up, it just wasn't safe to take the chance that he'd be available for that game, and the Vikes will need a home run hitter if they plan to beat Indy.  Smith is out for Weeks 5-8, so adjust accordingly.  As stated earlier, keep him stashed away if you can, as Bennett and Williams are not proving they can stay healthy and Smith will very likely see a lot of action upon his return.

News: Mike McKenzie traded to Saints for QB.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Not direct Viking news, but great news for Viking WRs when they face GB.  McKenzie played very well vs Minnesota.  With Al Harris and a safety almost sure to be assigned to Moss all game, look for secondary WRs to have big days vs the Pack-"it-up-we-are-done"-ers.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 1:49 on Mon Oct 4 2004

News: Moe Williams suffers strained calf.

Fantasy Football Slant:
When it rains, it poors on Viking RBs.  Bennett suffers another knee injury, Smith's vacation hits home, and now Moe suffers a calf injury and won't take any reps this week.  He's still slated to start Sunday @ Houston, but expect to see plenty of rookie Mewelde Moore in relief.  The extraordinary depth Minnesota started the year with had many clammoring for a trade with Miami.  It's now clear that would've been a huge mistake!  Williams makes a nice fill-in vs a Houston D allowing 133+/gm; however, with health problems, it's not recommended.   Stay tuned to find out how quickly he heals this week.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 1:29 on Mon Oct 4 2004

News: Bennett suffers another knee injury, undergoes surgery.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Michael Bennett took a hit in practice and suffered a torn meniscus in the same knee that has had him sidelined since preseason.  He had surgery to repair it today and will be held out until Oct. 24th.  Bennett can't seem to stay healthy the last couple years, and wouldn't even sniff a fantasy roster if it weren't for Moss and CPepp raising his stock.  Don't be suprised if he's held out another week or two after his new & improved return date.  Even when he does return, he'll ease in and split carries with Moe Williams and Onterrio Smith (after suspension) for a couple games, so if he's your #1 RB, your in trouble.   Keep him on the shelf if you can afford it, but don't expect much before mid-November.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 1:20 on Mon Oct 4 2004

News: Smith's suspension likely to sideline him beginning this week.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Onterrio Smith's suspension hearing has officially hit the fast track.  Originally slated for this Wednesday, the appeal hearing has apparently been fast tracked and sources close the Vikings put the chances of Smith taking the field this Sunday at about 1%.  Smith would hardly warrant a roster spot through the suspension, as Bennett is supposed to return to the starting lineup; however, Bennett has suffered a setback (read further updates), and it's quite possible Smith returns to start after his "vacation".  If you can afford it, put Smith on a shelf as it's probable he'll still see significant action later in the season.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 7:41 on Fri Oct 1 2004

News: Smith's appeal to be heard Wednesday.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Onterrio Smith's suspension just seems to loom but never arrive.   The appeal hearing is set for Wed. with a decision likely not to take affect until Week 6.  That is not set in stone; however, as the Monday notification rule, which would alert the Vikings of Smiths unavailibility on Monday the 11th, is not a rule or part of the collective bargaining agreement.  This is great news for the Vikings, who can now ease Bennett back in vs Houston week 5.   This is terrible news for Bennett, Williams and Smith owners, who will have no idea who to start.  As painful as it is to do vs. a weak opponent, you should only start a Minnesota RB as a last resort in Week 5.  Stay tuned, we'll let you know if anything changes.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 6:13 on Thu Sep 30 2004

News: Viking LBs officially doubtful for Week 5.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The status of EJ Henderson & Chris Claiborne for Week 5 at Houston is doubtful according to Mike Tice.  But local media, and Claiborne himself have both said they expect to see him back for that week.  Henderson is a bit more tenuous, but is very optimistic he'll be ready for NO week 6.  Stay tuned sports fans!   We'll update you on the value of the Viking DST closer to gameday.

News: Viking LBs injured in win.

Fantasy Football Slant:
EJ Henderson & Chris Claiborne were both injured early in the game this week and missed the rest of the tilt, forcing rookie Dontarrius Thomas to play the Mike for the first time in the pros.  A less than average LB core got worse and Thomas Jones lit them up for it.   Claiborne says he should be back after the bye for the Houston game.   Henderson will miss 2 to 6 weeks.   Neither the Viking Unit as a whole, nor any IDP is a fantasy consideration, but the thin LB core of the Vikings could increase the start value of RBs against.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:24 on Sat Sep 25 2004

News: Week 3 Analysis vs. the Chicago Bears

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings host a Chicago Bear team riding high off a win at Lambeau last week.  At first glance, the Viking offense would appear to heavily outweigh the Bears D.  With the success Kearse had last week as a blueprint for Ogunleye, and the injuries the Vikes have suffered at that point of attack, the Bears defensive teeth could produce a bit more bite than expected.  The Bears run game is operating in high gear already, and should pose a stiff challenge to the Viking D-line, which has under-performed to this point.

When the Bears have the ball...
Expect the Bears to continue their gameplan from last week; run the ball and control the clock.  They tried to keep Favre and Green off the field, and they'll need to try to keep CPepp and Moss off the field too.  Grossman may yet become a good NFL QB, but he still needs time and isn't ready to carry a team on his back yet.  The Viking D Line is disappointing so far this year and Tice has shuffled the LBs due to poor play from rookie Dontarrius Thomas, so don't be surprised to see another good week out of Thomas Jones.  As has been the case this year, no Viking merits a start in IDP leagues, nor does the D/ST unit as a whole.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Minnesota will probably see much of the same gameplan opposing them this week that Philadelphia employed to a win last week.  Ogunleye will probably not joker like Kearse did, but the Bears have Urlacher for that.  The big difference this week will be the opposing offense, which is much less potent than Philly.  The Eagles got up and forced the Vikings to abandon the run, leaving Smith with only 28 yards on 10 carries.  The Vikings will be running more in this one, and while Smith won't rack up huge numbers, more than 28 is probable.  Moe Williams returns this week to steal goal line carries, and that will happen after Smith was stuffed 3 times at the goal line last week.  The Bears secondary is banged up, to put it mildly.   Expect very nice numbers from Moss, as usual.  Look for Robinson to break out and have a nice game vs. his old team.

Key Matchups
Haayer/Dorsey vs. Ogunleye
Mike Rosenthal was lost for the season this week so Haayer gets the start at RT.  Tice has high hopes for his 4th round pick Nat Dorsey, who he says will come into the game after 2-3 series.  If Haayer is containing Ogunleye and the game is close, don't look for that to happen.  If the Vikings have the game in hand, Dorsey will certainly see some action.  Either player must do a good job or a repeat of last week could ensue, where Kearse seemed to run free and give CPepp little to no time to throw.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 305 pa. yds & 2 TDs,  15 ru. yds (4 stars)
Onterrio Smith - 70 ru. yds, 15 rec. yds (3 stars)
Moe Williams - 25 ru. yds & 1 TD, 15 rec. yds (1 star)
Mewelde Moore - maybe 20 rec. yds. (0 stars)
Randy Moss - 110 rec. yds & 1 TD (5 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 80 rec. yds & 1 TD (1 star)
Kelly Campbell - 25 rec. yds (1 star)
Nate Burleson - 25 rec. yds (1 star)
Richard Owens - 15 rec. yds (1 star)
Morton Andersen - 4 XP + 1 FG (3 stars)
D/ST - 3 sacks, 1 INT, 23 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:     - 31   - 23

News: Urlacher questionable for Sunday.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Not directly Viking news, but huge impact for this week's tilt if Urlacher can't go.  Don't hold your breath though, as Urlacher has yet to miss an NFL game, and he'll continue that streak Sunday.  Look for him to spy CPepp most of the game, which could limit CPepp's rushing yards.

News: Mixon returns from suspension.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Kenny Mixon is returning from his alcohol-related suspension this week to start vs. Chicago.   That's good news for the Minnesota D who will need to stop the run.  Chicago is the #5 rushing team in the league, and racked up big yards last week @ GB.  Mixon is the best run-stopping D lineman the Vikings have, so his return is welcomed.  His fantasy value; however, is pretty marginal.   If anything, he helps raise the Minnesota D from a 1-star to a 2-star rating for this week.  Not a great start if you need a DST, try elsewhere.

News: LB Dontarrious Thomas struggles; demoted.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Things were happening way to fast for the rookie out there, and the replay of LJSmith's TD on MNF clearly shows Thomas missing his assignment and letting LJ run free.  There are no Minnesota LBs worthy of an IDP roster.  It's even debatable that any Viking is; however, Kevin Williams and Brian Russell would be the only two marginal considerations.

News: Vikes sign TE Berton.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Sean Berton made the team last year but was cut in camp this year.   He's a solid, reliable blocker and should see plenty of time in that role with Wiggins and KSass out this week.  However, he has no fantasy value as a TE on your roster.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:37 on Wed Sep 22 2004

News: Moss and Robinson set for a big game.

Fantasy Football Slant:
O-Coordinator Scott Linehan is taking a ton of heat in the media for not trying the fade to Moss or Robinson vs the short Philly corners last Monday.   Moss at 6'4" vs Lito Sheppard at 5'10" is a no-brainer!    Alas, the play wasn't attempted once and is definitely being pointed out as a missed opportunity.  Chicago's secondary is ailing and they're starting a lesser talented group with no one over 6'nuthin.  Expect good numbers from both Minny receivers.   Add an add'l bonus to Robinson who's playing his old team and will be incented to perform well.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:31 on Wed Sep 22 2004

News: Moe Williams back this week.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Moe returns from an ankle injury that sidelined him last week.  He could've gone, according to him, but coaches held him up in case Onterrio Smith's suspension came down this week.  He's back this week and make a note; he will be the goalline back.  There's a lot of frustration about the trips inside the 5 vs. Philly that didn't result in TDs.  Smith and CPepp couldn't get it in.  Look for Linehan to go back to Moe in those situations as he's more than proven up to the task.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:23 on Wed Sep 22 2004

News: Onterrio Smith starting again vs Chicago.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The suspension inevitably facing Smith is apparently not going to hit again this week.  As such, he's a decent start vs. Chicago.  Not a great start, but a good start as a 3rd RB.  You could find better, as TE and RT injuries, along with an opposing D that hasn't allowed a rushing TD this year could combine to limit his numbers.  Moe Williams is also back this week and will probably cut into Smith's touches.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:24 on Tue Sep 21 2004

News: Rosenthal likely out for the year.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Coach Mike Tice is classifying Rosenthal's injury as "significant" and will "likely end his season".  This is bad news for Culpepper, Williams and Bennett owners.  Adam Haayer and Nat Dorsey will replace Rosenthal this week vs Chicago.  Haayer has played 6 games total and Dorsey is rookie.  Their first task?  Some guy name Ogunleye.   IDPers, Adewale is a 5-star starter if he wasn't already.  Meanwhile, Moe Williams, the probable starter vs Chicago, is a risky start at best.  CPepp is still a must-start with 300 yds & 1-2TDs, but with Ogunleye and Urlacher chasing him all day, expect a couple sacks and a fumble/INT or two.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 7:27 on Tue Sep 21 2004

News: Rosenthal goes down with sprained foot.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Starting RT Mike Rosenthal is currently diagnosed with a sprained foot, but rumors are circling that it's really broken.   This would be a big blow to the Viking O-Line, further compounding the problem created when Kleinsasser went down with a knee ligament injury.   Adam Haayer replaced Rosenthal last night and looked awful.   He was clearly outmatched by Kearse.  If Rosenthal misses significant time, the Vikes will be forced to hold in the RB and/or chip with a TE.  Injuries have already pillaged the TE position so that option is already hard-pressed.  Dixon, the RG is too old and immobile to be much help.  Throw all this in a pot, bring to a boil and you've got less options in the passing game and a serious blow to the running game.  Keep a close eye as both CPepp and Bennett will suffer if Rosenthal is out long.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 7:23 on Tue Sep 21 2004

News: Wiggins injured in loss.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Wiggins sprained his hand Monday night, and will leave the Vikings razor thin at TE if he has to miss time.  Richard Owens did catch 3 passes, but is certainly not worthy of a roster spot.  The only other TE on the roster would be Jeff Dugan who is a blocker and is a non-factor in the passing game.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 14:35 on Sat Sep 18 2004

News: Week 2 Analysis vs. the Philadelphia Eagles

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikings travel to "The Linc" in Philadelphia to take on the Eagles on MNF.  Both teams had less than stellar defensive performances last week, as both units gave up over 410 yards, allowing 17 points each.  Whichever team improves more defensively will probably see the win, as both offenses are capable of scoring big points.

When the Eagles have the ball...
Don't look for the Eagles to have a lot of success running the ball.   They'll attempt to exploit the young LBs on the Viking squad.  The short passes will be very effective, yielding a couple long, time-consuming drives. They'll take their shots downfield with TO, who has a distinct advantage on any Viking DB.  With the short pass gameplan, don't bother with any Vikings in IDP leagues.

When the Vikings have the ball...
Minnesota should have success running the ball vs. a D that allowed 140+ to a terrible Giants O-line.  The big play is always a weapon for the Viking O, and that won't change this week.  Look for play action to setup a couple bombs to Moss and possibly Kelly Campbell.  Though CPepp is always a starter, don't expect another 5 TD game, as the Vikings will be trying (and will need) to control the clock.

Key Matchups
Viking LBs vs. Mitchell & Westbrook
Seattle showed exactly how to exploit this group in preseason.  A short attack should prove very effective and render the improved Viking D line moot.

Forecast
Daunte Culpepper - 245 pa. yds & 2 TDs,  30 ru. yds (4 stars)
Onterrio Smith - 110 ru. yds & 1 TD, 15 rec. yds (5 stars)
Mewelde Moore - 20 rec. yds. (0 stars)
Randy Moss - 90 rec. yds & 1 TD (5 stars)
Marcus Robinson - 35 rec. yds (1 star)
Kelly Campbell - 45 rec. yds & 1 TD (2 stars)
Nate Burleson - 25 rec. yds (1 star)
Jermaine Wiggins - 15 rec. yds (0 stars)
Morton Andersen - 4 XP + 1 FG (3 stars)
D/ST - 1 sack, 1 INT, 30 pts allowed. (0 stars)

Final:     - 31   - 27

News: Williams out for Monday.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Suprisingly, Moe Williams won't make a go of it on MNF this week.  The sprained ankle apparently needs rest.  Can we read into this that OSmith may have his suspension take effect for the 9/26 game?   Williams would certainly be needed to start if that happens.   This rest would go a long way to ensuring he's as healthy as possible.   Either way, Moe owners need to make other plans.

News: Elling returns as kickoff specialist.

Fantasy Football Slant:
A wild ride for Elling continues as the carousel drops him back in Winter Park today.  Word from the press is that he will only be handling kickoffs, but remember where you heard this:  don't be suprised to see him trotting out there to attempt FGs of 45 yards or longer.   Andersen doesn't have that leg anymore, but Elling does.  This, of course, doesn't improve his fantasy status, which is still nil.  But it may mildly hurt Andersen's, who remains a top 10 kicker if Minnesota's offense keeps going at full steam.

News: TO tipping the Eagles gameplan?

Fantasy Football Slant:
"I'm looking forward to the undercard, Freddie Mitchell versus Kelly Campbell,'' Owens said, referring to each team's slot receivers.  This was in response to questions on the marquee matchup between TO and Moss.  Could TO be tipping Andy Reid's hand?  Seattle dismantled the Viking D in pre-season with a bevy of short passes over the middle.   Viking LBs had a lot of trouble keeping up in coverage.  Sounds like Reid's scouts did a good job of picking that up, and may plan to use the same strategy this Monday.   Last week we nailed the Kelly Campbell sleeper call, and we'll ride that horse again, as both Campbell & Mitchell look like a nice sleepers this week.

News: Onterrio named MNF starter.

Fantasy Football Slant:
OSmith will get to showcase the talents he says make him the Steal Of the Draft.  He's an excellent start in what should be a barn burner. (aka Take The Over   ) This may be SODs (or P-O-T as fans have taken to chanting) last chance to truly shine as the bye, his suspension and Bennett's return will likely put him on the shelf for over a month.  Smith owners should begin scanning the wire for other plans after the Chicago game on 9/26.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 6:11 on Thu Sep 16 2004

News: Moe Williams questionable for MNF.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Not much was made of the injury after Sunday's romp over Dallas, but any injury to Moe puts the few carries he does get in jeopardy.  Moe is a tough veteran and smart money expects to see him suited up come Monday, but it's a very risky start. Try to find help elsewhere.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 5:14 on Wed Sep 15 2004

News: Vikings sign veterans Shaw, Brown.

Fantasy Football Slant:
A very thin group at CB got worse when Irvin went down with a season-ending Achilles injury.  The signing of dregs from preseason doesn't alleviate that problem.  Sure, the Vikings can now at least field enough CBs, but with passing games of the Eagles, Colts, Saints, Seahawks and Packers (twice) still on the schedule, the Viking defense is no more than a bye week/matchup fill-in.  Even then, choose wisely!

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 4:01 on Wed Sep 15 2004

News: Kleinsasser could be out for a month or more.

Fantasy Football Slant:
K-Sass is integral to the Viking run game, and provides maximum versatility with his ability to release for passes.  This is the second year in a row he's missed significant time due to injury, and is one strike away from the dreaded "injury-prone" tag.  This increases Wiggins value marginally, as CPepp spreads the ball around quite a bit.  Rookie Jeff Dugan will fill in for KSass's blocking duties, but has no fantasy value.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 6:40 on Sun Sep 12 2004

News: Vikings sign RT Rosenthal to six-year extension.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Vikes have one of the biggest O-lines in the league, and they started every game together last year.  This signing will stabilize the RT position, along with a solid C in Matt Birk and a franchise LT in Bryant McKenzie.  Keeper leagues should rest assured the Viking running game will be solid for years to come.

News: Williams added to injury report.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Take a breath, it's Brian Williams, not Moe.  Brian was slated as the #3 corner to play in nickel situations but may not play that role due to a knee injury from preseason week 1, forcing the very green Rushen Jones into play.  While the Cowboys don't have the Rams or Packers passing offense, they should be able to exploit Jones.  If you had any inkling to start the Minny D this week, you better make other plans now.

News: Robinson questionable for opener.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Robinson is in Coach Tice's doghouse somewhat for missing much of the preseason with a "mild, mild" injury to his hammy.  That might land him on the Inactive list for Sunday.   Robinson has already dropped to 3rd on the depth chart, so he isn't much better than a #4 on your roster right now.  Burleson is a much better play this week, and Kelly Campbell is a very nice sleeper if Robinson gets a DNP, especially if you get big play points.

News: Kicker Update: Conway Out, Andersen In.

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Viking kicker carousel keeps on a-turnin.  Conway was abysmal in kick-offs in the pre-season finale vs SEA.  The plan is to bring in Andersen for FG duty, and groom Travis Dorsch from practice squad fodder to kickoff specialist in time for week 5, after the Vikes bye week.  Andersen is a future HOFer and probably deserves a bit of a bump from where Conway was ranked.  He is definitely a top 10 kicker when paired with the Viking offense.

News: Smith could play three games before suspension.

Fantasy Football Slant:
It's unlikely Smith is available in your league, but if so, grab him.  This news is great for the Vikings, who may have Smith for the first three starts and Bennett back for week 5.  Smith is a solid #2 if he's starting, though he will likely lose goal line carries to Moe Williams.   On the flip side, those that grabbed Moe as a sleeper are crushed by this news as it almost eliminates any starts Moe might have lucked into.  Williams remains a #4 or emergency #3 who will vulture a few goalline TDs again this year.

News: Suspension upheld for Viking DE Mixon.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Mixon is solid vs. the run, but not a major pass rush force, so he shouldn't have ever been a consideration and will most likely have to be replaced by rookie Darrion Scott for the two games.   This perfectly illustrates the Vikings' achilles heel this year.   The defense has almost no depth.  Any injuries will significantly lower the talent on field.  As such, the Vikings warrant no more than a bye week fill-in on your roster, and only if the matchup looks good.
