Bears Offseason Report
« on: Feb 26th, 2005, 10:52am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Reports by Len "I like to eat Pasta"relli of ESPN and Chicago radio stations are that the Bears have agreed to terms with Mushin Muhammed.  No details on the contract yet or link.....

Mushin will immediately upgrade the Bears receiving corp.  Not too good when your two best receivers are Terrell adn Gage.

Great size (6'4-230ish), Plays TOUGH (played w/ a dislocated thumb, sprained toe and cracked ribs in the Captial One Bowl -vs- Georgia), but isn't "physically" tough (injury-prone-soft-body);

Awesome velocity on his throws and can fit balls into tight spots. Very accurate w/ good arm strength.  Purdue career leader w/ a 2.09 INT percentage (28 INTs in 1,336 attempts).

Not a threat to run and will need a protective offensive line to survive as he isn't his best under pressure. Has an elongated throw that some fear NFL CBs will feast upon.

Needs to play more consistently against top competition though, his "negatives" can be related to a lingering hip injury last year in which he was finally benched for in one game.

Played in a "shotgun-spread-offense". On one hand thats good because he knows how to read defenses and has played within a sophisticated Pro-Style passing game. However, he struggled at the Senior Bowl making the transition to taking the snap from under center - it will take him some time in the NFL to get used to that.

Basically - some believe he is better than Drew Brees (also played for Purdue) and others think he is Tim Couch material.

Boom or Bust prospect.

Hope this helps

Rex Grossman is still the man in Chicago, although the Orton pick was clearly designed to light a bit of a fire under Rex.

Orton has a world of talent and a great arm, but he needs to be coached up a LOT as he made a lot of poor decisions as a QB at Purdue.  Coming into this season, Matt Leinart was the #1 prospect at QB and Orton was #2.  Orton started 2004 on fire and then played terribly for the remainder of the season, thus cementing his plummet on the draft boards.

What the heck was wrong with having Thomas Jones as your
starting rb?

Give him some help with a healthy line and a qb then see what he can do.  I think he would of put up some monster numbers this year.

Plus having Mohammed and then someone like Mike Williams
would of opened up the offense and tons of lanes for him.

"Edinger Gets the Boot"

"Two undrafted free agents were signed, but Edinger's tenure in Chicago basically ended when Doug Brien signed a one-year deal with the Bears on May 12th."

"Edinger asked to be released following the addition of Brien, but the Bears figured they would take one last look at the merchandise before making a decision."

"Edinger leaves the organization fifth on the all-time scoring list with 463 points. His 75.3 percent conversion rate on field goals is the second most accurate in team history."

"Ultimately the decision came down to the fact that over the last 24 games, Edinger has converted 24 of 43 field goal attempts. He was also due to make a base salary of $1.1 million and had three years left on a five-year $7 million contract."

Uh-oh...  Here we go with rooks set to have a BIG impact not getting into camp on time... From "The REAL Feed":

Bears' top pick likely to miss first practice
Tallahassee Democrat: Football (19.07.2005 00:06)
The possibility of Cedric Benson being signed and in training camp for the Chicago Bears' first practice Sunday is as slim as it has been since the Texas running back was taken with the fourth pick of the 2005 NFL draft.

It's amazing that camps open next week and we have ZERO first rounders signed.  (Do we have any second rounders either?  I think third is the highest round with players signed at this point.)

Apparently Cedric Benson could be the most difficult of the first-rounders to sign though.

From "the Gridiron Newsstand", here is some LOCAL news on the status of RB Cedric Benson's contract talks or, should I say, non-talks:

http://www.suntimes.com/output/bears/cst-spt-biggs28.html.

A particularly dismaying quote:

"Now it's a matter of the Bears and Eugene Parker digesting them (the numbers of Alex Smith's contract) before talks on a deal for running back Cedric Benson resume."

Oh, and here's some LOCAL hype about Muhsin Muhammad:

http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/bears.asp.

We fantasy footballers know to put that in perspective, though.

The article only contains a small quote from Mushy about the Bears defense, which (if healthy) deserves a little hype.

Anyway, regarding Mushy, NFL Network reported that QB Rex Grossman recently got married and Mushy was one of a very select few teammates invited to the wedding.  Apparently the two have developed a pretty solid relationship fairly quickly.  That can't be anything but good for fantasy owners.

Cedric Benson... looking ahead.  From "The REAL Feed":

Salaam was one holdout who regrets the decision 10 years later
Sports: NFL / Football -- Charlotte.com (31.07.2005 07:14)
These days, Rashaan Salaam promotes martial-arts fights staged in China. Curtis Enis works the third shift at a garage-door factory in Russia, Ohio. And the Bears' latest first-round running back, Cedric Benson, inches closer to his own football Siberia with every day his training-camp holdout l...

Uh-oh...  The gloves are comin' off... ... From "The REAL Feed":

Bears coach Smith losing patience with Benson's holdout
SI.com: NFL (01.08.2005 03:26)

LOCAL and OFFICIAL corroboration of this mess from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

I don't think his fantasy value goes down just yet,... but, another week, moreover, in light of the resurgent season Thomas Jones had last year, precise fit for the new offense or not, you've got to put Benson down a peg.

Did you all see Kyle Ortons performance last night?  Granted, he was playing against the Dolphins third string Defense, but he showed that Chad Hutchinson better get comfortable holding that clip board.  Orton is going to be the #2 guy behind Grossman by week three of the preseason.  The Bears have been high on him all along.  He showed them that they made the right decision in taking him......

And with Grossman being the injury free QB that he is(sarcasm intended), you may see Orton starting this year!!

Orton will be the starter, as my post indicated above.  Hutchinson proved he can't do it last year.  The Bears are high on Orton and now he will be given all the opportunity in the world to show he is the man.  In my opinion, this will ultimately be good for the Bears.  I think Orton will be better than Grossman.....
