Texans In-season Report
« on: Sep 21st, 2005, 6:30pm »

Following their 22-7 loss to the Steelers on Sunday, the Texans have fired their offensive coordinator, Chris Palmer. Undoubtedly, Coach Capers' decision was based on the ineptitude that the offensive line has shown in the last few years. It's funny, then, that the new offensive coordinator should be none other than offensive line coach Joe Pendry.

If it came right down to it, I'd rather be Nick Nolte than Gary Busey.

Well, depending on how the Texans fair in the "Bush Bowl", winning it by losing it, I suppose, this may just be the proverbial "beginning of the end" for Mr. Davis with the Texans AND, perhaps, his NFL career (think, "Travis Henry"), which would be such a travesty. Tailback is NOT the Texans problem.  They actually have three good ones as I see it.  Anyway, from "The REAL Feed":

Texans' Davis has surgery, won't reach 1,000 yards
ESPN: NFL (29.12.2005 09:27)
Davis won't reach 1,000 yards for first time in career by Associated PressHOUSTON -- Houston Texans running back Domanick Davis hadarthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday and will miss the season finaleat San Francisco. Davis missed four games, including the last two, with kneeinflammation. "B...

As HoustonTexans.com staffer Nick Schenck reported this afternoon, the Texans' depth at running back already was shallow with Domanick Davis on injured reserve. It took another hit today when head coach Dom Capers announced that Jonathan Wells was placed on injured reserve because of a deep thigh bruise.

Names starting be thrown around...  From "The REAL Feed":

Texans will interview Kubiak for opening
SI.com: NFL (02.01.2006 18:27)

As a Bronco fan, this makes me nervous...  I know the guy probably deserves a shot at a head-coaching gig, but...

I DIGRESS...
Quick reflection... from the mind of the admin...  Isn't it nice that we can report this kind of relatively small, speculative stuff without having to start a new thread?  I mean, save for this thread, this somewhat valuable news would not be reported in "the Red Zone"; I would NOT want a "Kubiak to Texans" thread started. I wouldn't even want a "Kubiak tracker" thread started.  ...  There is a method behind the madness, fellas...

As a this dismays me.  But, I am happy for Gary, who has admirably played second fiddle in one capacity or another for so many years now out in Denver.  From "The REAL Feed":

Inside the NFL
Sports: NFL / Football -- Charlotte.com (14.01.2006 09:06)
Denver offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will reportedly be named Houston's next head coach after the Broncos' season ends.

...

Maybe he will come back someday and succeed Shanahan.

It's virtually a done deal...  See ya, Gary!  From "The REAL Feed":

Finally, Texans land Kubiak
St. Paul Pioneer Press: Football (23.01.2006 04:30)
The Houston Texans will hire Denver offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak to take over the worst team in the NFL and help decide what to do with the first pick in the draft.

Here is an interesting rumor:

The Texans are reportedly working on a trade for Vikings wide receiver Troy Williamson, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Citing a report on a Dallas sports talk radio station, the Star Tribune indicated that the Texans remain high on Williamson's potential after considering drafting him last year.

Houston would love an option opposite Andre Johnson, as Jabbar Gaffney and Corey Bradford have done nothing to distinguish themselves in that role; however, neither did Williamson in his rookie campaign. If the Texans intend to draft Reggie Bush this April, perhaps Domanick Davis would be available to fill the Brian Westbrook role in the Eagles-style offense new Vikings coach Brad Childress is bringing to Minnesota—though the Texans would likely need more coming back their way than just Williamson in a deal for Davis. Maybe there's a shred of truth to this speculation…

How about if Houston keeps Carr off his back with D'Brickashaw Ferguson on his blind side?  Maybe trading down a bit?

That would be an interesting NFL daft move.  If they could actually shore up the O line that early (uh...), Davis could stand a chance to show what he has, Carr could show what he has...

Nice scenario!

Is this evidence that the Texans are leaning AWAY from taking hometown prospect Vince Young?  ...  From "The REAL Feed":

Carr to remain with Texans for next three seasons
SI.com: NFL (10.02.2006 20:01)

If so, I think they're making the right move.
