From "The REAL Feed": Brooks' one-week trial over, Jets turn to Testaverde ESPN: NFL (05.10.2005 10:42) Brooks' one-week trial over, Jets turn to Testaverde by Len PasquarelliThose tired, old Vinny, veni, vidi, vici jokes you thought had been put away for good by the NFL media? Get ready to hear them again. Ditto the hackneyed "Vinny and the Jets" references. The venerable Vinny Testaverde, with ... I REALLY don't like this move. I thought the kid did well considering he was playing away in Baltimore,... no picks, not a horrific completion percentage, no fumbles. Vinny's been out of ball-playing ALL YEAR! I know he's familiarish with the system, but I see this just as a last-minute, loooong-shot, desperate attempt to SAVE THE SEASON, which is destined to FAIL. The guy's 41-years-old and has only been back in New York, no less as an NFL quarterback for the Jets, for like 10 days. Is this guy really ready? Mind you, I've always been a Testaverde apologist. But, in this situation and at this point in his "career", which really is over, once this team is "out of it", which I think will be sooner than later given the fact that I believe Vinny is set up for failure here, Bollinger will be back in there getting his shot. FURTHERMORE, Pennington's career may be in jeopardy and this team has to get a (better, fairer) look at Brooks. The Jets would have been better off going with the philosophy of delaying gratification in this case, I fear.

| It looks like Brooks Bollinger is going to have to stay comfortable on the bench. There were Rumors that Testaverde would be benched. However, it appears Testaverde is going to be fine and start after the bye week if he is healthy.(all indications are that he is): http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AluhGbQpEK2k30eXnjEKxO1DubYF?slug= ap-jets-testaverde&prov=ap&type=lgns

IF that ends up being the case, we'll see how long it lasts. If you have eyes, you can see the fact of the matter... He's looked quite God-awful... and every bit a man 41-years-of-age who was out of football for three-quarters of the the year... and now he's got a sore calf muscle, that he incurred, mind you, on a play on which he was not even hit or overly rushed, to make him more of a statue in the pocket. As Bob Herzog of Newsday wrote, "A loss of mobility is something the strong-armed but slow-footed Testaverde cannot afford. As Edwards said, 'If he's wounded, we can't send him out.'" Plus, at best, another loss or two and they are going to (have to) want to see what they have in Bollinger given Pennington's VERY uncertain future... There's little to no hope for the Vinny... from an NFL perspective, no less from a fantasy one. ... On the other hand, granted they are keeping it simple for Brooks, but the kid has looked at least somewhere between pretty good and hopeful. I think Edwards is being stupid about this to be honest. In any case, to cool off any of your Testaverde hopefuls out there, here's another quote from Herzog worth noting: "When asked if he'd consider using both Testaverde and Bollinger in a sort of two-QB platoon, Edwards did not dismiss the notion out of hand. 'There's a lot of ways you can do it. That's why I'm not saying anything. I'll weigh my options,' the coach said." Here is a link to this Newsday article I am referencing: "Vinny to get sacked? Herm in no rush with the bye week but may audible to Bollinger". As the above article suggests, Edwards was... is... in NO RUSH to make a decision here. And, why should he be... other than to cater to story-starved reporters? Here are other LOCAL articles from off "the Gridiron Newsstand" dated today that at least suggest that Edwards just blurted out his qualified "commitment" to Testaverde: (from the AP article linked to by DD) "'It's over. It's done. It's Vinny,' Edwards said. 'Vinny's going to go for San Diego if he's well,'" to get the pushy reporters off his back: "EDWARDS LUKEWARM ON STICKING WITH VIN" "Jets Won't Commit to Testaverde as the Starter" "Jets mull playing two QBs" This, I think, paints for you all the "bigger picture". Granted the AP report appears to the the "latest" "word", but to just say that "ALL indications are that he (Vinny) is (playing)," I believe, is just a bit tendential.
