by Dave Bohrer Time & Date of this Update (PST): 12:00 on Sun Dec 24 2006 News: Week 16 Report Fantasy Football Slant: The Redskins play in St. Louis this week. Look for Ladell Betts to come through with a big game. Jason Cambpell is showing that he is the real deal, but if you are in your Championship game or going for the league title, I'm sure that you have used a different QB. Go with the guy that got you to this point. The other usual suspects, Moss and Cooley, are also solid plays this week. Look for Moss to reach the end zone once again. Campbell has thrown a TD in each of his five starts. Of course, you should stay far away from the Redskins' D. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 12:00 on Sun Dec 10 2006 News: Week 14 Report Fantasy Football Slant: To my surprise, there were two fantasy bright spots on the Redskins' last week, Ladell Betts and Santana Moss. It was Moss' first good game in quite a while but with a rookie throwing to him, he is still a risk proposition. Betts signed a contract extension this week, meaning he will come back as Portis' back-up next year. That is bad for Betts' owners who thought he may be next year's Chester Taylor and for Portis owners who may lose some carries to a productive Betts. As for this week, the Skins' play Philly. Betts is a good play as is Moss. However, I think the best play is Cooley, who is coming off of his first bad game in a while. Look for Cooley to come back and score this week. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:00 on Wed Nov 22 2006 News: Week 12 Report Fantasy Football Slant: Okay, there's hope for the future in Jason Campbell. In his debut as a starter, the second year pro put up 200 yards and 2 TDs. Don't expect this every week (particularly this week in Carolina) but he is certainly a valuable keeper. Of course, if you are in a playoff chase this year, he has no value to you. In fact, like last week, there is little fantasy value on this team right now and I can only recommend playing Ladell Betts and Chris Cooley. CC had a TD last week and will continue to be the go to guy with Moss nursing a hamstring injury. I am not sure what Santana's status is for week 12. Keep him on the bench unless he will definately play. Betts is still a low #2/high #3 in my book who has a so-so matchup this week. I say this, and not that he has an unfavorable matchup, because he is a productive receiver out of the backfield and if the Skins' are down early, he may score some points through the air. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 09:00 on Sat Nov 18 2006 News: Mamma Mia! Fantasy Football Slant: How about oh vey! Actually it's more like oh crap! Unless you have been living in a cave, you know that Portis is done for the year. Ladell Betts steps in as the starter. The Jason Campbell era begins with Brunell finally getting the hook. To make matters worse, Santana Moss is listed as doubtful and even though he is not ruled out for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, he is too risk to play this week. Let me start by saying that you should not play any Redskins except possibly Betts and Cooley. Betts is a high #3 this week given the fact that he is starting behind an untested rookie. He was on most rosters prior to Portis' injury anyway, but if he was not picked up and you are in the playoff hunt, that is an easy recommendation. He is the #1 free agent pick-up this week. I liked what I saw from Campbell in the preseason and we'll see what happens. If you are in a deep keeper, he is probably on a roster already. If not, there is no need to pick him up since he is not going to be a premium keeper even if he does well. He is certainly no better than a #3 QB this week. Playing without Moss doesn't help. I'm not sure what this will do for Cooley but he is a low #1, high #2 TE this week. The defense and the kicker (Novak).... don't even think about it even against the crappy TB offense this week. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 08:00 on Sun Nov 12 2006 News: Week 10 report Fantasy Football Slant: Whoa! Last's week win over Dallas was crazy. However, in the fantasy world, not much going on. Santana Moss is practicing and has been upgraded to probable. Get him back in there. Portis and Brunell are also ready to go. I've seen reports that Cooley's role will be expanded, so he may be a guy to watch in the second half. Other than that, there is not much to report on from a fantasy perspective. Keep an eye on Jason Campbell getting some playing time a little down the line. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 016:30 on Sat Nov 4 2006 News: Week 9 report Fantasy Football Slant: The Redskins come off a bye week and play Dallas at home. There are a lot of injuries to report, most notably Santana Moss who is reportedly not playing. I hesitate to recommend either Lloyd or Randel El even though they will be counted on to step up. If anyone steps up, Chris Cooley is a more likely candidate. Both Portis (ankle) and Brunell (ribs) are listed as probable. As always, Portis is a #1 and Brunell is a #2 despite being nicked up. Neither the kicker nor the defense are good options this weekend and probably for the rest of the year. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 09:30 on Sun Oct 30 2006 News: Week 8 report Fantasy Football Slant: The Redskins are off this week on a bye. PLEASE do NOT post to this thread! This thread is only to be appended to by Dave Bohrer.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 12:00 on Sat Oct 15 2006 News: Week 6 report Fantasy Football Slant: The Redskins' offensive inconsistency continued last week against the Giants. This time they were surprisingly bad against a sketchy defense. So in the past couple weeks they lit up the tough Jags defense and then couldn't move the ball against the Giants, a team that gave up 35 first half points in the preceeding game. This week against Tennesee at home, conventional wisdom is that Brunell, Portis and Moss will all have big games. Tennesee's defense held the Colts in check last week but are still ranked towards the bottom of the league statistically. With a record of 2-3, this is an important game for the Redskins so that they do not fall too far behind. Therefore, I expect an easy win with both the offense and defense playing well. If they do not win this game, this will be a long season. Finally, with regard to my midweek recommendation to pick up and play the Redskins' defense, keep in mind that the unit is ranked 28th in the league against the pass. However, they are playing a rookie QB and I recommend the play. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 18:00 on Wed Oct 11 2006 News: Midweek update regarding John Hall and picking up Redskins' defense Fantasy Football Slant: I will address the Redskins' poor performance last week in my weekly report. However, since some leagues require that free agents be made by Thursday night, I will report on two things now. K John Hall is out for the season with a groin injury. The Redskins signed a kicker named Novak. However, I do not know much about him and cannot recommend picking him up even as a bye week filler this week. Also, the Redskins play at home against Tennesee this week and I recommend picking up the Redskins' defense if they are available and playing them. Vince Young will be the real deal one day, but right now he is a green rookie running the 27th ranked offense and the Skins will blitz all day. Travis Henry ran for 120 against the Colts who are weak against the run. He should not be that successful this week. Pick up D unless you have a top defense with a good matchup this week. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:30 on Sat Oct 7 2006 News: Week 5 report Fantasy Football Slant: Wow! After sputtering for the entire pre-season and the first two weeks of the season, the Redskins offense expectedly turned it up against the Texans and, surprisingly, did the same in Jacksonville. The Jags have a top defense, making the offensive output a shocker. Brunell and Moss led the way with breakout games. Unfortunately, like it was at certain points last year, the Redskins offense is not at all predictable. At least not to me. This translates to playing Portis and Moss every week (duh) and hoping for the best. Brunell is another story. Conventional wisdom says play him with a good match-up, but, so far, that has not been the way to go. This week the Redskins travel to NJ to play the Giants (speaking of unpredictable). Last year, the Giants killed them, but this year who knows? I'll keep Brunell as a #2 and Portis and Moss (I knew he was due for a breakout game) as obvious #1's. Cooley still has not broken out but had 70 yards last week. Stay away from the Redskins D this week but keep in mind that they play the Titans at home next week. If your D unit is on a bye then, perhaps think ahead and grap the defense if they are available. K John Hall is a decent bye week filler this week. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:30 on Sat Sept 30 2006 News: Week 4 report Fantasy Football Slant: After a nice offensive showing against the lowly Texans, the Redskins face a difficult matchup in Jacksonville. Portis is back and is a must start every week. Moss has still not had a breakout game but has not been horrible either. He has been consistently mediocre, but unless you have 3 other studs, keep going with Moss and wait for him to produce. Brunell looked pretty good last week. However, he is a low #2 this week against his former team. Cooley has not been producing like he did last year. I'm not sure if it has to do with the new system or what. If you haven't already picked up another tight end, this may be the week to do so. However, I still have faith in Cooley and expect him to bounce back (just not necessarily this week against a tough defense). Time & Date of this Update (PST): 8:30 on Sat Sept 23 2006 News: Week 3 report Fantasy Football Slant: This is what we've been waiting for. All reports indicate that Clinton Portis is going to play. He is listed as probable on the injury report. So it is safe to play him this week in Houston. Put him in, don't look back and expect a big game. There have been rumblings about Brunell's ineffectiveness and inserting Jason Campbell. Be aware. However, Gibbs will stick with Brunell for a long time. Let's see how the offense does with Portis at full strength before even thinking about anything like that. Brunell is a good #2 play this week. Moss has not broken out with a big play this year. Look for that either through the air or on the ground. He was listed as probable earlier in the week then taken off the report. Finally, the Redskins defense is not a bad play this week in Houston. Look for a turnover or two and a solid overall performance as they look for that illusive but important first win. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 8:00 on Sat Sept 16 2006 News: Week 2 report Fantasy Football Slant: The Redskins travel to Dallas for the Sunday night game. It was this time last year that they came back to beat the Cowboys on two late bombs from Brunell to Moss, setting the tone for Moss' great year (and Brunell's great first half of the year). This week the big news is that Portis is listed as doubtful and will reportedly not play. This guy is an animal and it would not shock me to see him play a little. However, going by the reports, it is not looking good. Dallas has a good defense and they are hungry for a win coming off a loss to the Jags. So... this is not a great week to play any Redskins' fringe players (Betts, Duckett, Randle El or anyone else for that matter). Brunell may have to pass a lot in the second half if the running game is not working and they are behind. He is a decent #2 who could end up with 250 and 2 TD if all goes well. Look for a long one to Moss and Cooley getting a lot more balls thrown his way. John Hall kicked 3 field goals last week but I still think there are better options around the league. This is not a great week to play the defense. I except a turnover or two from Dallas but they have a lot of firepower with Jones, TO and Glenn and are capable of big numbers. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 19:00 on Fri Sept 8 2006 News: Week 1 report Fantasy Football Slant: It should come as no surprise that the Redskins' offense looked horrible in the preseason. However, preseason is preseason and I don't put a lot stock in it. Proof in point, the Steelers "D" looked bad in preseason ... Culpepper looked good ... but when it counted, the Steelers stepped up. My point is that the guys you drafted to start must start. This week they open against the Vikings on Monday Night Football. If you drafted Moss and Cooley, odds are you drafted them as starters. Go with it. Moss may be double teamed all night, but he is always capable of going the distance. Unfortunately, it looks like Portis is out at least this week. Have him on your bench and only insert him if word comes out to the contrary. Betts appears to be ahead of Duckett on the depth chart and is a decent start. Perhaps play Duckett in TD leagues or as a #3 if you are desperate (anything can happen here). Brunell remains a #2 and should only start in leagues that play 2 quarterbacks (if at all). If Brunell looks bad, keep an eye on Campbell for the future if you are in a keeper league or one with deep rosters. The more I see of him, the more I think he is going to be good. John Hall is a mediocre start this week. If you have one Vandy and are looking another kicker, I think you can do better. The defense is also a mediocre start this week against the Vikings who will look to minimize mistakes on offense. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 23:01 on Tue Aug 22 2006 News: Redskins pick up TJ Duckett Fantasy Football Slant: Just as I am hitting send on my rankings report, the NFL Network reports this three way deal. Duckett to the Redskins, Lelie to the Falcons and the Redskins '07 third to the Broncos. I am not sure why the Redskins did this, but they must not be comfortable with Betts. Also, I cannot imagine taking a healthy Portis out in goal line situations, but that is what Duckett does best. Perhaps TJ should be handcuffed to Portis now? Time & Date of this Update (PST): 23:00 on Tue Aug 22 2006 News: PLAYER RANKINGS Fantasy Football Slant: These rankings are based on a 10-12 team league. |
- Position- - | - Player- - | Projected Fantasy Role - | - Comments - | | QB | Mark Brunell | #2 | Despite having some big-time weapons at his disposal and some gas left in the tank, consider Brunell no better than a strong back-up QB. Many people thought that he was finished going into last year. He then got off to a great start then had a poor second half. This year I see a carry-over from the end of last year. He is a 36 year old QB who may fall apart. Do not rely on him as a #1. The upside is that he has plenty of weapons and a coodinator (Al Saunders) who is known for producing good QB stats. | | QB | Jason Campbell | #4 | The QB of the future. He is battling Todd Collins for the backup job. Don't count on him this year, unless Brunell goes down, but he should be a good pickup in keeper leagues. With that being said, he has not been incredible in the first two preseason games, so let's see how the rest of the preseason goes. For now, I will say his arm looks strong and he appears to have a good head on his shoulders. | | RB | Clinton Portis | #1 | Everybody knows about the shoulder separation. Pre-season sucks. The question is will he miss any regulur season action? The answer is I don't know. He ran for the first time on August 21st and still has a sling on his shoulder. He certainly will not play again in the preseason. However, he is still still a great back who will be the work horse when he gets in there and will play though injuries if possible. The likes of LJ, LT, Alexander and Tiki will be taken 1-4 in most drafts. Then comes Portis IMO. He may miss a game or two in the beginning of the year, but he will be there for you come playoff time. He was a monster during the second half of last year and he will be a monster this year. It is well reported that coordinator Al Saunders is a blessing for Portis. | | RB | Ladell Betts | #4 | If you have Portis, handcuff him with Betts. The word is that Portis will not miss more than one game, but if you use a first rounder on Portis, you should have insurance. | | WR | Santana Moss | low #1 | Moss had a great year last year, catching for almost 1500 yards and grabbing 9 TDs. However, that is his ceiling. He will not pass those numbers IMO. He is also prone to injury. My advice is to let someone else draft him high. Take him if he slips. If Portis is healthy, the Skins will be a running team. Even if he is not, Moss' success is dependant on both his and Brunell's fragile health. He may lose catches to Lloyd, Randel El and Cooley. | | WR | Brandon Lloyd | low #3 | Lloyd came over from the 49ers for a 3rd rounder. He is slated to start opposite Moss and could turn out to be the Skins' possession receiver. I do not see him being anything better than "decent" by which I mean 800-900 yards and 5-7 TDs. Too much competition for only one ball. It should be noted that he has a minor hamstring injury to be aware of. | | WR | Antwaan Randle El | #5 | While dangerous when he touches the ball, Randle El only scored once last year as a starter in Pittsburgh. Again, the Skins will pound the ball with few balls trickling down to the third receiver. On the other hand, a few trick plays may go his way. | | TE | Chris Cooley | #1 | A solid tight end to take after Gates, Gonzalez, etc. are gone. His numbers (775 and 7 TDs) sound about right for this year. I tend to think the Cooley will take catches from the WRs rather than vice versa. | | PK | John Hall | #2 | A bye week fill in at best. Not a top 12 kicker. | | D/ST | ---------- | Low #1 | If all goes well on offense and they can control the clock, this will be one of the better defenses in the league. The turnover statistics are not mind-blowing but as long as Gregg Williams is running the show, this is a defense that can be relied upon. | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 12:30 on Sat Jul 09 2006 News: OFFSEASON REPORT Fantasy Football Slant: It's that time of year. For those of you, like me, who take the offseason "off", it's time to get back into it and see what's been going on the past few months. The Redskins were once again active in the free agent market, adding Randle El from the Steelers. WR Brandon Lloyd was picked up in trade from S.F. and they also added backup QB Todd Collins. Significantly, the 'Skins brought in offensive coordinator Al Saunders, formerly of K.C. He comes over with a history of success and will take over the play calling from Joe Gibbs. Together with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Saunders give the Redskins the best coaching staff in the league (arguably). Patrick Ramsey was traded to the Jets. The draft focused on the defensive side of the ball. QB-- This may be the team's weakest position both in fantasy and as far as the team's success is concerned. Word is that Mark Brunell will start, Todd Collins is #2 and Jason Campbell will start his 2nd year as #3. Brunell is coming off a 3,000 yard/23 TD year. He will be 36 years old in September. He started the year off red hot and then really cooled down. At best, he is a #2 QB. More likely, he should be considered a "middle of the pack" QB. Draft based on his second half of the year, not his final totals. The team focused on the run more in the second half. Collins has never really been successful as far as I can recall. This team has a lot of talent, so one would think that any QB that pilots the ship should have at least moderate success, especially with all the receivers that were picked up. However, don't take Collins until Brunell gets hurt. His upside is poor. Jason Campbell is intriguing. The articles I have read indicate that he is still the QB of the future. It is premature to evaluate him at this point, but he should see plenty of pre-season action that will give some indication of his talent. He could turn out to be a big time player based on some of the comments, but he shall see. RB -- No one will benefit from Saunders more than Portis. He is coming off a great year, rushing for 1500 yards and 11 TDs. Unquestionably, he is a #1 RB and a top 7 pick in any draft. The question is how high should he be taken compared to Alexander, Tomlison, James, Johnson, etc. My advice is this: you cannot go wrong with any of the above. If Portis is around with the #5 pick, take him. I think he will carry the load again this year and increase his TDs. In a keeper league, perhaps LT and LJ are more appealing, but after that, take Portis and you will not be disappointed. TE -- Chris Cooley is coming off an excellent year with 71 catches, 774 yards, 7 TDs. With the talent on the team, his success should continue. However, if Brunell should get hurt and Campbell takes over, Cooley numbers may suffer. With that caveat, he is a low #1 tight end. WR -- Santana Moss was huge last year with almost 1500 yards and 9 TDs. I don't know what it is but I am completely sold on this guy. He is a great deep threat and his numbers this year may be the same. Maybe I am still upset because I took him early two years ago with the Jets when he was a bust. However, he does not have a great QB throwing to him, Lloyd and Randel El will take catches from him and he is injury prone. My advice is to let someone else take him as a top 5 WR. If he slips a little, grab him. As for the others, I don't know yet. Lloyd could be productive as could Randel El. David Patten is also in the picture as well. This should be an exciting year. I am super high on Portis and Cooley and not so on Moss and Brunell. Campbell is the wild card. PLEASE do NOT post to this thread! This thread is only to be appended to by Dave Bohrer.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:30 on Sat Jan 07 2006 News: WILDCARD GAME REPORT Fantasy Football Slant: The 'Skins travel to Tampa Bay for the first wildcard game of the weekend. They are trying to avenge their last loss, a week 10 comeback by the Bucs, 36-35. Since then the Bucs have been hot but the Redskins have been hotter. The big news out of DC this week was the signing of assistant coach Gregg Williams to a three year deal thereby nipping in the bud any head coaching interviews. One can assume that Joe Gibbs will not be around forever and Williams is comfortable with his security and being the heir apparent. Back to the game, their should be less scoring this week. If the Redskins can escape with a victory, they will have to run Portis a lot as they have been doing, continue to play very good defense and hit Santana Moss on a big play or two. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:30 on Sat Dec 31 2005 News: Week 17 Report Fantasy Football Slant: For the final regular season game of the year, the Redskins play Philadelphia. The Redskins control their own destiny as a win puts them in the playoffs (they win the division with a win plus a Giants' loss). So, from a fantasy perspective, if your seaon isn't over, you can feel comfortable playing most of the Redskins that got you this far because they are certainly not resting this game. Most importantly, Mark Brunell hurt his knee and came out after a great start against the Giants. He is expected to start this week, so Patrick Ramsey has no value. As any Brunell owner knows, his stats have been way up and way down in recent weeks. Now with this injury situation, I would not be comfortable playing him this week. Roll the dice if you must, but give a long hard look elsewhere if you can. On the other hand, Portis, Moss and Cooley are no-brainers. Moss ended his TD drought in a big way. If you have any of these guys, play them. Even if Brunell gets hurt, Ramsey has proven he can get the job done and can get the ball to these guys. The Redskins' defense is a good play against the Eagles. It just started snowing here on the East Coast and I believe it will continue to tomorrow, which may be a factor in the game. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 8:00 on Sat Dec 24 2005 News: Week 16 Report Fantasy Football Slant: Okay, I admit it. This team (at least the passing game) is unpredictable. It seems that there is no method to the madness; Brunell can go out and throw 4 TDs against a good defense and 3 int's against a crappy D. So where does that leave us going into a huge game against the Giants? It was only 2 months ago that the Giants killed the Skins 36-0, holding Clinton Portis to 4 carries and 9 yards. The Giants D is banged up at the linebacker position. Even if they weren't, Portis has re-established himself as a #1 back since that dreadful game and there is no way anyone should even consider not playing Portis. The real questions marks are Brunell, Moss and Cooley (3 TDs last week after not doing much for a month). I think I should advise everyone to sit them, and (given my prior predictions) have everyone do the opposite so they will have big games. However, I can't do that. The Redskins have won 3 in a row, the Giants are ailing and the passing game did enough last week that Brunell (#2 QB), Moss (#2 WR) and Cooley (#1 TE) are all good plays. The Redskins' defense has turned it around the last two weeks. They were good in the beginning, horrible in the middle of the year and, the last two games at least, they have been great. The Giants put up good offensive numbers, so I would not necessarily jump back on the bandwagon this week. But they are not a bad free agent pickup if your #1 unit is playing a really good team. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:00 on Sat Dec 20 2005 News: Week 15 Report Fantasy Football Slant: Big game for the Redskins as they face Dallas at home. Both teams are hoping to earn a wildcard spot, so it is a must win game for both. Clinton Portis and the running game have been excellent. Portis is a #1. The passing game, however, has not been working. Brunell has not had a good fantasy game in weeks and should be on the bench right now. His lack of productivity has meant that Santana Moss' stats have been poor as well. It was his late heroics against Dallas in week 2 that set his great year in motion. Maybe he will find the end zone again but I have a feeling the Cowboys' secondary will keep an eye on him after what he did. With his stats to date, it is tough to sit Moss but he drops to a low #2 unless the passing game gets going. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:00 on Sat Dec 10 2005 News: Week 14 Report Fantasy Football Slant: The 'Skins travel to Arizona this week. This game can be a shootout or a low scoring battle. Either way, Clinton Portis will get a lot of carries and a lot yards. Last week, Rock Cartwright had a huge game but that was a fluke. Unless something like that happens again, I do not think Cartwright has any value. Santana Moss is probable with a hamstring injury and left practice on Wednesday. He practiced on Friday with no reported problems. He will play and has a good match-up. There is a little concern in my mind due to his history of hammys and the fact that he, more than any of the top WRs, relies on speed. So, unless more news comes out, start him and hope for the best. This is a big fantasy week for many. This is not the time to take chances so I would avoid the Redskins' defensive unit because I am fearful this could be a shootout game. Mark Brunell's numbers have been somewhat low over the last month, but I expect good #2 numbers against the Cardinals. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 9:00 on Sat Dec 3 2005 News: Week 13 Report Fantasy Football Slant: The downward spiral continues. The Redskins can't seem to win the close ones and the post-season is slipping away. The fantasy outlook for this team has also leveled off. However, this week they play the porous Rams' defense, so except good numbers from Portis and Moss who are both #1 options this week. Brunell and Cooley are also good plays. The Rams are starting rookie QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Even though he looked good last week, the Redskins' defense should be considered (probably off the waiver wire) if you need a big late season win and your regular defense has a bad match-up. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 12:00 on Sun Nov 27 2005 News: Week 12 Report Fantasy Football Slant: For those of you that had to get your line-ups in before the Thanksgiving games, sorry for the late report. However, nothing new to report on the Redskins' front this week anyway. San Diego comes to town. I recommended dropping the Redskins' defense in the past and would not play them this week. The usual suspects, Portis, Moss, Brunell and Cooley, should get their usual stats. Brunell has slumped the last few weeks. If you have a QB of equal value, perhaps put Brunell on your bench this week. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 08:00 on Sat Nov 19 2005 News: Week 11 Report Fantasy Football Slant: Oakland comes to D.C. this week where the Redskins are undefeated this year. This should be a high scoring game. Clinton Portis has found the end-zone in recent weeks and is a solid #1 option. If the Redskins get out to an early lead, he will have a huge game. Santana Moss has been held scoreless the last few weeks so he is due to get in this week. I predict at least one TD. He will at least get plenty of yards. Mark Brunell should also have a nice game. He needs to stop turning the ball over. He remains a #2 QB. Chris Cooley has been a consistent tight end and is a solid starter. Bye weeks are over so there is little need to discuss the Redskins' back-ups. However, if you are looking to replace an injured starter and are hoping to get a lucky week out of someone, the Redskins' are not the team to look at. Ladell Betts does something every 3 weeks and since he caught a TD last week, don't expect anything for a while. He is doubtful this week with a knee injury anyway. Rock Cartwright will take his place but he has little value unless you are really desperate. David Patten is out for the year but he has not been a fantasy factor at all. Keep an eye on WR Taylor Jacobs who moves into the starting spot. He hasn't shown any value yet but who knows. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 22:50 on Thu Nov 11 2005 News: Week 10 Report Fantasy Football Slant: Breathe a sigh of relief. The Giants' game two weeks ago was a fluke. Hopefully such a disgrace won't happen again. The Redskins have four clear-cut fantasy starters, Brunell, Portis, Moss and Cooley. As long as they are healthy, they should all continue to put up consistent stats. This week, the injury report looks clean, with the exception of Brunell who is listed as probable with a calf injury. He doesn't run much anyway, so I am not concerned. The Redskins travel to Tampa Bay, who remains the #1 rated defense in the NFL despite not playing too well the last two weeks. Last week, the Bucs gave up a lot of points to the Panthers but less than 300 yards. So, expect the 'Skins yardage stats to be a little below average. I view Brunell and Portis as solid #2's at their respective positions. Portis does not return to #1 status unless he can score more consistently. Moss is a #1 wide receiver. Cooley is a playing really solid and he gets a lot of lots from Brunell. It should be noted that K John Hall is back, but he has never been a good fantasy kicker. He is a bye week fill-in at best. The Redskins' D is a good play this week. The Buc's offense has been very poor since coming off the bye two weeks ago. However, after this week, the match-ups become tough (Oakland, San Diego, Giants to name a few). I cut the defense myself due to the schedule. They are a much better NFL defense than a fantasy defense. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 13:00 on Thu Nov 03 2005 News: Week 9 Report Fantasy Football Slant: Give the Redskins offense a "pass" after the beating they took last week. Come on, they had a great month overall and are still in the top 10 in offense! After the impressive 52-17 week 7 performance over San Fran, the Skins completely sank at the Meadowlands, 36-0. They look to rebound at home against the Eagles Sunday night, but from a fantasy perspective, this is a tough team to figure out. The Eagles defense was also destroyed this past week, so somethings gotta give, right? Santana Moss had an unbelievable October, so we can definitely give him a pass for last week. He continues to be a must play WR this year as he can score from anywhere on the field. His is listed on the injury report as probable for an unspecified "illness", but I would assume he is going to play. Clinton Portis picked up only 4 yards on 9 carries last week, but they were so far behind that he did not have a chance and barely played the second half. He is a solid #2 this week. He will generally get yards (except for last week) but only has 3 TDs on the year and they all came in the San Fran game. TE Chris Cooley was carted off the field with a knee injury but later returned to the game. He is, however, listed as questionable on the injury report due to a hip problem, so avoid playing him. Brunell was putting up some big-time numbers until the Giants game. Five very good games in row cannot be lucky. Look for Brunell and the entire offense to return to form against the Eagles, whose D has been weak. Avoid playing the Redskins defense if you can this week. Even though the Redskins have the #1 pass defense in league, the Eagles have the #1 pass offense. Even if T.O. does not play, the Eagles offense will still score some points and move the ball.
