Packers re-sign running back Green to one-year deal

How things can so dramatically change in such short order in the NFL...  From "The REAL Feed":

Walker tells Packers he wants to be traded
ESPN: NFL (10.03.2006 00:30)
Javon Walker told ESPN.com that he has already informed the Packers of his desire to play elsewhere.

Things may really be falling apart in Green Bay...

The Pack sign up and coming Safety......

March 13, 2006 8:29 PM ET
Packers:  Manuel on board
The News

The Packers on Monday signed safety Marquand Manuel, who started the final 13 games for Seattle in 2005 after Ken Hamlin was injured in Week 7.
Our View

Similar to last year, the Packers figure to enter 2006 a bit of a mystery on defense, especially with another new defensive coordinator on board. Their secondary was one of the weakest units in the NFL in 2005 and while Manuel is certainly not a top tier acquisition, it's good to see the Packers addressing their most glaring needs

Another good move on D.......

Packers win recruiting battle for DT PickettBy John Clayton
ESPN.com

In perhaps the most competitive negotiation Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers beat out the Bills and the Rams for Rams defensive tackle Ryan Pickett.

Terms of the agreement weren't available. Pickett was visiting the Bills but had stayed in touch with the Rams, hoping to get an offer that would bring him back. The Packers talked Pickett into his first visit over the weekend and there was some thought he might not have totally liked his visit.

Those thoughts were proved wrong when the Packers stepped up and gave him a deal. Pickett will replace Grady Jackson as the run-stopping defensive tackle in the team's 4-3 scheme.

Pickett's signing along with the addition of safety Marquand Manuel and re-signings of halfback Ahman Green and defensive end Aaron Kampman are being used as recruiting tools to help prevent Brett Favre from retiring.

Favre is watching the Packers' free-agent acquisitions to see what kind of team they will have. If he likes what he sees, he is expected to postpone thoughts of retiring for another year.

John Clayton is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.

This is the same exact AP piece from above...  Everywhere I have happened to poke around, Green Bay local dailies in particular, give it the title it's given as per the post above,... all except this out-of-town resource...  Look at the difference in the selection of a title...  From off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"Favre says '06 will be finale if he plays"

Same exact words, quite a different emphasis! This is just rhetoric, but I thought it interesting enough to post about.  It's, at least, an object lesson in "media slant" particularly relevant to the goings on of this forum. Don't believe the hype!

Update on Favre retirement saga...  The team really is sincere about giving their legendary quarterback all the time he needs...  From "The REAL Feed":

No rush: Packers, Favre delay roster bonus to late July
ESPN: NFL (14.04.2006 21:25)
The Packers have pushed back the April 15 trigger date for quarterback Brett Favre yet again.

I don't know what makes me think it, but I actually think that the longer this goes on the greater the chances that he retires. What do yous think?

I personally think Farve is just being an ass.  By this point you either know or don't know if you are going to play.  Farve is just not telling the public.  I hope he has at least told the organization his plans.  They do have a draft to plan for......

My real thought is that Farve wants to be traded to a team that has a chance to win in the playoffs.  (ie...Miami)  But he can not publically come out and say he wants to be traded.

Either way, Farve is being an ass........

Mind you, this definitely could be the case (but I don't think Miami would be his #1 choice).

Here's just an interesting thought that popped into my head (while I labor over Symbolic f'n Logic)...  As I stated, I don't disagree with the take that Favre would (have) like(d) to (have) go(ne) to a legit playoff contender.  BUT, do yous think that maybe, just maybe, another possibility is that Brett would have liked to have played out his final days back down in New Orleans?  Playoffs or not, what would give him "purpose" (to play another year or two) would be contributing to the rebuilding of his hometown team and hometown (area), a purpose embedded in the very circumstances, a real-world purpose that is not evanescent like (mere) Super Bowl dreams, which he has already lived, mind you.  Playoffs or a Super Bowl would just be the cherry on top in this scenario.  For that matter, how about Steve McNair?  The same could stand for him.  ...  Drew Brees went and unexpectedly mucked both those scenarios up, though.

Anyway,... just throwin' it out there...

They say the Favre situation will NOT affect their draft strategy, according to "The REAL Feed":

GM: Favre's indecision won't affect Packers' draft plans
ESPN: NFL (24.04.2006 21:01)
Brett Favre's uncertain football future isn't going to govern the Packers' plans for the draft, general manager Ted Thompson said.

Gee.   Big surprise.

Packers' Favre will play in 2006
The News & Observer (04/26/06)

Worries about Favre's future have become an annual rite of winter for Packers fans, as the QB has contemplated retirement during the past several offseasons -- only to return each time.

Charles Woodson a Packer:

Packers agree to terms with Charles Woodson
NFL.com wire reports (04/26/04)

Woodson's signing comes a day after Brett Favre told the team he would return to play the 2006 season. Favre previously urged the team to make a "statement" in free agency, similar to the signing of Reggie White in 1993.

What a turn-around in just two years...  We can recall last year's saga, now, this this year...  This guy definitely was not made to play in Green Bay.  Honestly, given the timing of this, I think he dislikes Favre for what he said during last year's saga and is unhappy to hear that he is returning.  But, we all know he can't trump Favre... and, mind you, shouldn't.  From "The REAL Feed":

Packers' Walker gets OK to talk trade with other teams
ESPN: NFL (27.04.2006 10:12)
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Javon Walker has received permission from the team to explore trade opportunities and a deal is expected before this weekend's NFL draft, league sources with direct knowledge of the situation said.

Wide receivers have become such prima donas in today's game...

Here we go again...  From "The REAL Feed":

Favre could change mind, play beyond '06 season
ESPN: NFL (06.05.2006 17:03)
Despite comments earlier in the offseason that there was "no doubt" the upcoming season would be his last, Brett Favre said Saturday that he wasn't so sure.

Given how things looked just one year ago, tell me this guy's career didn't get a totally unexpected shot in the arm...  From "The REAL Feed":

Packers, receiver Driver reach agreement on new deal
ESPN: NFL (11.05.2006 18:30)
The Packers and wide receiver Donald Driver have agreed on a four-year extension for $17 million, according to Driver's agent Jordan Woy.

Driver's got serious fantasy value going into '06...

RB Gado...  Try Dr. Gado...  From "The REAL Feed":

Paging Dr. Gado: Pack back spends offseason in hospital
ESPN: NFL (22.05.2006 18:12)
Green Bay's Samkon Gado spent part of his offseason doing grunt work at a local hospital, a step toward his goal of becoming a doctor and returning to his homeland in Nigeria.

When it all comes out in the wash, will he be their go-to tailback next year?

O-line takes a hit...  Currently topping "The REAL Feed":

Packers likely to lose guard Barry with quad tendon tear
ESPN: NFL (23.05.2006 15:00)
Four-year veteran offensive lineman Kevin Barry, who was contending for a starting job on the Green Bay Packers' revamped blocking unit, likely will miss the entire 2006 season after sustaining a torn left quadriceps tendon.
