Bears Offseason Report
« on: Mar 21st, 2006, 11:39pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

The Bears have been quiet during free agency, but this could be an interesting signing:

Griese agrees to five-year deal with Bears

"Brian Griese agreed to a five-year deal with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, adding depth behind Rex Grossman at quarterback."

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=sports&id=4013402

"The Bears have said they are committed to Rex Grossman as their starter, but Griese has started 72 of 75 games in his career."

...and

"Behind a defense that was ranked No. 1 for much of the season, a strong offensive line and effective running game, the Bears went 11-5 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

"Grossman's numbers -- 20-of-39 passing for 259 yards in two games -- weren't overwhelming, but the passing game opened up when he returned."

I really love Lovie.  Pieces coming in place!  Back-ups and competition.

Bob's son already stirring the pot...  From "The REAL Feed":

Griese hopes Bears keep open mind
SI.com: NFL (22.03.2006 19:18)

In any event, whoever is chucking the ball in Chitown isn't usually much of a get from a fantasy perspective...  The REAL question is...  Who's going to be toting the rock for them next season?  Any inside word on Benson's status?  What about Jones?  Inquiring minds want to know...

Everything I've been hearing (via various interviews and sements on NFL radio) cites Jones as the "slam-dunk" starter in CHI with Benson fighting for scraps.  Pople feel Smith realizes what he has in the veteran back and will use him accordingly.

Azumah to retire after seven NFL seasons

http://chicagobears.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=14727

In 2005, a hip injury that required surgery during training camp robbed Azumah of his explosiveness. He played in 15 games as a nickel back after losing his starting job to Nathan Vasher, who was voted to the Pro Bowl after leading the Bears with eight interceptions.

Azumah, 28, retires third on the Bears' all-time kickoff return list with 2,885 yards, trailing only Glyn Milburn (4,596) and Dennis Gentry (4,353).

I don't deny that that's how things "appear" right now.  I must say, HOWEVER, that I firmly believe that fantasy footballers banking on Jones this year are deluding themselves and setting themselves up for trouble, and those with Benson, who have (relatively) modest expectations are going to be, at least, pleasantly surprised.  ...  Isn't this the "bait-and-switch" time of year, in any event, when teams with overpaid back-up studs "hype up" their seasoned incumbent, who's coming off a good season or run of seasons, only for (fiscal) reality to set in come July, August or when the incumbent starter gets injured and the overpaid stud back-up pops one or two "bigguns" and the switch takes place?

This is a guy the Bears want to land:

Bears sign Panthers' Manning to offer sheet
(AP: 4/21/06)

The Chicago Bears signed restricted free-agent defensive back Ricky Manning Jr. to an offer sheet Friday, with his agent saying the deal is worth up to $21 million over five years.

Manning spent his first three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, who eliminated the Bears from the playoffs last season. The Panthers have until April 28 to match the offer or receive a third-round draft pick from the Bears.

Da Bears seem to love them Panthers!  Lovie saw what hurt them, and he WANTS them!

This'll have Cedric Benson owners salivating...  It sure had me frothin' at the mouth... despite its just being rhetoric...  From "The REAL Feed":

Pasquarelli: Second time a charm for Benson and others?
ESPN: NFL (01.06.2006 17:01)
Cedric Benson was among a number of first-round picks who struggled in 2005. He should have plenty of opportunities to make amends in Year 2.

Jones pulling a Benson... and getting punished for it...  From "The REAL Feed":

Bears demote RB Jones, LB Briggs at minicamp
ESPN: NFL (03.06.2006 09:30)
When the Bears began their minicamp Friday, two starters who had bypassed most of the team's voluntary sessions in the offseason were demoted to second-team status.

Sure, this may be "temporary", but do you really think this is NOT the direction the Bears brass want to go in???  Come on, now...  This is a time for wise fantasy footballers to "realize"...  This is likely marking the beginning of a trend, namely the beginning of the end!!!

Pro Bowler finally shows up... according to "The REAL Feed":

Vasher returns to Bears practice without new deal
ESPN: NFL (20.06.2006 11:30)
Nathan Vasher has returned for the final three days of organized activities, and has suggested that his boycott got the attention of Bears officials.

Benson owners... it's officially time to commence salivating in earnest... From "The REAL Feed":

Bears, Peterson agree to three-year contract extension
ESPN: NFL (28.06.2006 21:19)
Adrian Peterson, who in four seasons has proven his value to the Bears as a viable No. 2 tailback and a standout special teams performer, agreed to a three-year contract extension.

I still wouldn't be surprised in Jones somehow finds himself in Indy before it's all said and done.

Thu Bears,

Any news on Tim Day? I feel he could be an offensive weapon and nice pick up at Tight End, though probably not an every down player...lacking blocking skills.  I really like Dusty Dvoracek as a draft pick, may get some playing time and contribute in rooky season at Defensive Tackle.

Let the transition from Jones to Benson begin...  From "The REAL Feed":

(This is actually the same AP article, but I thought both headlines from "The REAL Feed" really "paint the picture"...)

Jones gets hurt while taking physical
SI.com: NFL (27.07.2006 20:08)

Unhappy Jones injures hamstring in Bears camp

ESPN: NFL (27.07.2006 21:05)
Chicago Bears running back Thomas Jones, displeased with his situation on the team, hurt his hamstring during a physical Thursday and missed practice.

It's time to start movin' Benson way up your charts and Jones way down...

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  Thomas Jones is the best running back in Chicago since Walter Peyton.  Benson is a high paid wanna be, with completely unproven skills at the NFL level.

If Lovie runs TJ out of town, he should have his head examined.  You can run Benson up your charts all you want...right now neither Jones or Benson looks real good...Lovie just has not made his mind up what he wants to do...other than throw his weight around and make an example out of proven players not making early camp.  Last years coach of the year is making rookie mistakes with his running back situation.

Now don't go saying that I said Benson is no good.  I said he is unproven at the NFL level...and that my friends is a fact.  I'll take a proven athlete over potential every time and 1300+ yards is proven.

Well,... perhaps you didn't exactly say, "No good," BUT you did say this...

Quote:
Benson is a high paid wanna be, with completely unproven skills at the NFL level.

There's a pretty fine line there.

...

In any event, I didn't know you back when Jones was a Cardinal (or Buccaneer).  All I know is that right now I would love to know what you were saying about him back then.  I can't really, so I'll just take you at your word here and now... and henceforth... regarding Thomas Jones.  ...  All I know is that if he is feigning a sore hammy because he is upset about things, that's immature and he's cutting off his nose to spite his face.  Just do your best.  Understand the economics of the game.  Understand that you're still somewhat paying the price for your VERY lackluster performance early in your NFL career.  And, get out there and showcase your talent for everybody watching, which you know they are.  Don't be a baby about it... and potentially really ruin your career!

Regarding Benson,... though yet unproven in the long-haul in the NFL, he is the real deal.  There is no more prototypical of a back than him.  He was built to run footballs.

I won't comment on whether or not Thomas Jones is faking a hamstring or not, because only he knows.

I will say that Benson held out for the big paycheck last season and when he did sign and get his chance he got hurt.  It was disappointing, because I was real excited about getting Benson last season.  Still think he has the potential to contribute in a big way.  Just think a bird in the hand is always worth two in the Bush.

Again, the facts speak for themselfs, Jones gained over 1,300 yards last season on a team that had no passing attack and everybody knew they were going to give the ball to Jones and he was going to carry the pill.  Steg, Jones made a believer out of me last year and yes I would compare his God given natural athletism to those of Cedric Benson.

He's made me a believer, too, cwhams,... in his ability.  But, that doesn't matter to the reality of the matter.  I don't believe his future is with the Bears.  I'm sure he's made a believer of some other clubs as well, one of which he'll probably be playing quality ball for sooner or later, but the sooner the better.  Furthermore, from a fantasy perspective, don't let Benson's letting you down last year (like he did me too) coupled with Jones's performance cloud your "fantasy" judgment this year.  Those who are still picking/ranking Jones higher than Benson are screwing themselves.  Fantasy football judgment is about A LOT more than on-the-field success even if it is recent.

Auhhhhhhh, how sweet it is!!!  If Mr. Jones has made a believer out of anybody and gets a shot at a starting gig with a decent line...he still has fantasy value.

Truth is you are right Steg!  You just can't spend a #1 draft pick, 4th overall, pay the guy a ton of money and not put him on the field and give him a chance.  Tom Jones will very likely be singing the blues elsewhere.

That's the business side of the NFL that I don't like...rookies comming in and making millions more than proven veterans...but it is the reality of the league.
