Top Ten Fantasy TEs for 2006
« on: Aug 11th, 2006, 10:12am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Every year I post my top ten lists and it always generates lots of fun discussion and plenty of other top ten lists.  Have at it!

1. Antonio Gates
The Chargers still don't have any WRs that will take the catches away from him
2. Tony Gonzalez
He'll have more blocking responsibilities in 06, which is why he isn't #1.
3. Todd Heap
He should be even more productive with McNair at the helm.
4. Ben Troupe
Surprise! Troupe should emerge as the top TE and will be used as a WR too.
5. Jeremy Shockey
Despite the hype, he just doesn't produce with the top tier guys.
6. Chris Cooley
He creates mismatches as a TE/H-back hybrid and he gets looks in the red zone.
7. Alge Crumpler
He seems to be the only receiver Vick can ever find.
8. Randy McMichael
If he didn't have to block so much, he could be a top tier guy.
9. Dallas Clark
Is this the year he really emerges as a top TE? Probably not yet.
10. Heath Miller
Will continue to grow with Big Ben and should rise up this list each year.

Ok, something just struck me  , and I'm not really sure if it all totally adds up, draft predictions all have Gates usually #1, #2 right??? (for TE's)

Now the last time I checked a QB had to throw him the ball, well...... that person will be Rivers, so how come he isn't getting more love, when we are expecting BIG things from Gates, and not to mention Tomlinson getting receptions out of the backfield.

I'm a believer in Rivers, and I think people are really underestimating him this year, I stated once before, look for a Carson Palmer first type of season starting, if not BETTER!!!  3300+yds.  18+td's probably more, and 18 ints-probably a few less.

This guy you can get 8th-9th-10th rounds, its's foolish not to grab him, especially if you are a believer in Gates....... Hello????? Doesn't this tell you something.

Just a TE comment, man!!!!  You have McMichael and Troupe reversed, McMichael won't be in blocking that much, McMichael is going to be pushing the Gates/Gonzales envelope for top tier TE's,  with Culpepper QB'n now, people I believe are making a mistake passing on McMichael. (especially if Pepper's healthy enough to roll).

Troupe I like, but who's his QB?????  The same arguement can be made for Gates, who's his QB???  River's isn't getting any love, but man Gates is getting a #1 ranking !?!?1?!  What gives?

I would agree with McMichael being top 5 and I would definately have J. Witten in  the top 10!

Forgot about Witten, he should be right in the 5-7 range, he has to be, I've already witnessed multiple drafts and I've never seen Clark or Miller and even Cooley for that matter being drafted before Witten.

The thing is that Rivers has Gates and Tomlinson, and not a whole lot else. If he had a more reliable WR than McCardell, then I'd be a bigger believer in him.  That said, I don't think Rivers will be bad and have him in the top 15 for FF QBs.

If the Miami O-line plays reasonably well, I think that McMichael has a change to climb into the top tier of TEs, but I think he'll be called on the block for the running game quite a bit.

Ben Troupe is my surprise pick. I think that he'll do just fine with Volek at the helm, especially if the Titans do put him in the slot to take advantage of his receiving skills while Kinney stays in for protection.

Look at the rankings from a year ago... there's always a surprise amongst the top 10, and this year I think it's Troupe.

I have Heath Miller in 10th with 98 FF points. I have another sleeper pick at #11 with 97 points and then I have Witten next at #12 also with 97 points.  So he could easy rise into the top 10. I just think that Witten will see his numbers drop just a bit with Owens in tow and the fact that the Cowboys could be running some more two-TE sets. He scored 112 last year, so I see a point less per game (not a big drop, but enough to put him outside the top 10).

With the notable exception of Ben Troupe, who I REALLY don't like, I pretty much have all the same names you have on your list here within my Top 12, but I have them jumbled up quite a bit differently... pretty much from top to bottom, but, again, 9 of your Top 10 are within my Top 12, so...  Gotta leave it at that... Mums the word as I try to get us a magazine next year (on which I remain willing to cover $500 worth of the costs out of my pocket/"breathing room", but need a "group" to step up and make up the difference)...

Ben Troupe is a joke at top 10. (Just my thoughts your list is as good as any.)

I agree with Jason Witten comments...but I really like the whole Dallas offensive squad this season.

I would also include Crish Cooley in the top ten.

Got to make a post about Eric Johnson (Not a top ten...but):

August 9, 2006 12:19 PM ET
49ers:  Smith finding Johnson
The News
The 49ers took Vernon Davis with the sixth overall pick, but it is another tight end who has caught the attention of quarterback Alex Smith for much of training camp. That man is Eric Johnson, who missed all of last season with a torn plantar fascia. "It's tremendous to have Eric in there," Smith told the Oakland Tribune. "We can run anything in there, and Johnson will find that hole. ... He's a guy to go to."
Our View
Those fantasy players expecting huge things from Davis as a rookie should take note of the fact Johnson has been impressive in camp. The 49ers will likely employ two-tight end sets all season so both will see the field, but the combination of Davis' struggles to pick up the offense and Smith's targeting of Johnson has caught our attention.

I know this time last year I was very high on Chris Cooley... he finished #4 among TEs.  Most people didn't have him in their top 10.  Now this year Ben Troupe is my guy. Laugh all you want, but I like his chances this year.

I have to go with the majority here on the Troupe ranking.  I'm thinking one of the rooks will rank higher then Troupe...  maybe lewis or steg's boy, L. Pope...

That will merit a shot from the stegman i'm sure

Well... to show you all that I stand behind my rankings...

I drafted Ben Troupe as my #1 TE in the Giants of the Gridiron draft last night. I was able to get Heath Miller as well, so I should have a very solid duo there.

"5. Jeremy Shockey

Now let's look at the facts for 2005:

Times Targeted: Shockey 122 (2nd in the League)
Receiving Yards: Shockey 891 (3rd in the League)
Touch Downs: Shockey 7 (Tied for 2nd in the League)

That looks pretty elite to me.

So one year of solid yards and TDs equates to elite status? He's still not the same tier as Gates and Gonzo... Gates, over the last 2 years, had 2000+ yards and 23 TDs. Gonzo had an off year in 05 (even with 900+ yards receiving), but in the previous 6 seasons, he averaged more yards and TDs than Shockey had in 2005. So let's see Shockey repeat those numbers (or even improve upon them) before we start calling him elite. So far he's just another Todd Heap: a nice TE who can be a fantasy producer, but isn't really going to carry a team the way Gonzo and Gates have.

Yes, but Shockey does not have to carry the team.

Gates and Gonzo are more or less the first look in their prespective passing games. Shockey is not. Sure, you can make an arguement that Kennison is in KC, but he's really not. In New York, you have Burress, Toomer and Barber who all get their looks and passes thrown to. Shockey will put up better numbers than Gonzo this year. With the retirement of Roaf, Tony will have to stay in and block more.

I agree with cw and bw here You are right about one thing Philly..it should take more than a years worth of top tier stats to put you in the elite category. But I am curious to know if you thought that after Gate's first year when everyone bumped him to the elite above Gonzo in the following years draft, or is this more of a vibe thing about Shockey?

I guess I was talking more about carrying a fantasy team than an NFL team. Gates and/or Gonzo can really turn the tide of a fantasy matchup. Shockey has not been able to do that. He averaged about 50 yards a game and a TD every other week. Sure, that helps, especially at the TE position, but it's certainly not top tier elite.

Gates broke out in such an exclamatory manner, that I expected similar numbers in year two... primarily because he was option A, B, and C for the Chargers in the passing game. As BW stated, that's not necessarily the case in Giant-land. The Giants have a number of options on offense and I don't see Shockey all of a sudden becoming the go-to guy.

C'mon people. I had him ranked #5 overall amongst tight ends and said he wasn't in the top tier. I'm not saying he is a bust or anything... I just think he's a second tier TE.

More 2005 FACTS:

Troupe-
Times tageted: 80-11th in league
Receiving Yards: 530-13th in league
Touch Downs: 4-tied for 11th in league

You could be right about Troupe, but just like the Rackers and Thomas Jones doubters...I always take a been there done that kind of guy over a I gotta feeling way down deep inside kinda guy.

By the way Shockey (still very young) is far from a one year wonder...he has done well since day one and has better offensive tools than all TE's in the league...Gonzales & Gates pending.  The guy was playing the last six games with cracked ribs last year...he is tough as nails...concussions are are different story... those are not about being tough...your body just won't answer to the brains calls...he could slip in rankings.
