Broncos In-season Report

Starting tailback gig remains up in the air... Currently atop "The REAL Feed": Shanahan being coy about his starting running back SI.com: NFL (05.09.2006 06:38) This week, I think it'll be Mike Bell starting, Tatum Bell filling his usual "1b" roll, and Cobbs being activated and eating into their numbers. In the long run, though, it'll be Mike Bell or Cobbs as the "#1a" tailback. There's just no way to know that now, except that, I suppose, right now it is Mike Bell's job to lose. I don't think he's on a long leash, though. As for Tatum Bell, I just think he'll always be relegated to that "1b" role with the Broncos (again, that's the ONE thing about the Broncos backfield I've got down).

I can't tell a lie. I just got to call it the way I see it... I think Shanny and the Broncos are going to RUE the day they decided to go with this configuration at tailback, giving up on Mike Anderson and/or Ron Dayne and letting them go. I'm sorry,... but the two Bells just don't provide the "pow" that Anderson did and I believe Dayne, if healthy, could have. At least, provide something different... and a little veteran savvy. Both Tatum and Mike provide "pop", but neither provides "pow" or whatever. In fact, I believe with Mike Bell Shanny got two megalomaniacal about his stud tailback producing abilities and got too caught up in this feel good story of Bell's and wanted to show that it was about "him" (BAD move... by a great coach) by producing a stud out of thin air. Tatum and Mike just don't complement each other well. And, don't let the numbers deceive you. While their numbers through two weeks have been okay (just okay though), I watched today's game. They're not in sync at all, and it's because their running game is "awkward". Honestly I think Cedric Cobbs should be given a chance. Not because he's necessarily a better back. But, he brings something different to the table. I think he's more of a bowling ball-type back that would better complement (whichever) Bell. But, he almost fumbled his way onto the practice squad on the overtime kickoff today. So, I don't think that's happening anytime soon. But, Tatum Bell is notorious for wearing down both during a game and as a season presses on, and Mike Bell, an undrafted rookie free-agent, used to a college schedule, isn't going to fair any better as the season "wears" on, so I wouldn't bank on things getting better, and even if they do, it'll only be temporary and this experiment of Shanahan's will only come back to bite them in the ass late in the season/post-season... unless a fresh Cobbs steps in late in the season.

Sprained ankle aside,... this signing probably spells an end to RB Cedric Cobbs's weekly "activity", or should I say, "activation"... unless one of the Bells suffers an injury. From "The REAL Feed": Broncos bolster return game by signing Morgan SI.com: NFL (18.09.2006 18:30)

Given the report above,... which, despite being a diehard... , I am NOT happy about... because I am also a diehard Plummer fan and,... well,... by virtue of the former a Raider hater,... I am going to make this bold prediction... Jake "the Snake II" Plummer will be quarterbacking in Oakland next year and helping turn that franchise back around. In some way, I think it is an absolute shame that Shanny and the Broncos decided to go and draft Cutler. One part of me still thinks they could have done something better with that pick, and, yet, another part of me thinks they made the right move. I mean,... ultimately, I'm behind Jay, and I hope all works out well for all parties. That having been said, first Dayne and now probably Plummer, those are two of favs gettin' the shaft from my team. Damn it!!!

UNbelievable!!! Philly was right... Bell inactive... From "The REAL Feed": NFL Inactives (Sunday, November 12, 2006) The Sports Network: NFL (12.11.2006 16:09) How did it come to this??? How did Mike Bell go from being Shanny's golden boy... girl to, evidently, DEEEEEP in the doghouse all in the span of about one week??? I just hope ... it doesn't cost me in JYJ's league... Really, this is a case where being in Hawaii really works against you. As I went to bed LAAAAATE last night, I'm talking 4:30 a.m. local time, 9:30 a.m. EST, the news coming out seemed to be indicating that Tatum would probably be inactive. ... What a NIGHTMARE!!!
