Redskins In-season Report

Portis still not practicing and not looking good for opening day... according to "The REAL Feed": Portis misses practice, status for opener still uncertain ESPN: NFL (05.09.2006 21:31) Running back Clinton Portis and cornerback Shawn Springs didn't practice Tuesday, and their availability for Monday night's regular-season opener against Minnesota was uncertain. Betts would get the start, but Duckett, the guy Gibbs has brought in and is built in the "Ernest Byner" mold Gibbs so loves, is the guy to keep your eye on here...

Portis upgrade to probable. However, I would keep him on the bench week 1. http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/9648815

I think Gibbs is primarily trying to keep their opponent in the dark and on their toes and didn't appreciate Portis's flapping his jaws. Gibbs and Portis don't have the smoothest of relationships, and I think this situation is another outward manifestation of that. While in a straightforward sense this may be able to be spun positively, I think if you read between the lines, it doesn't spell good things for their relationship and, thus, the long term. Regarding this week, I betchya he's deactivated for the game, probably "officially" right at game time.

Along the lines of what I suggested earlier on this thread regarding what I perceive to be an extant tension between Gibbs and Portis, here's a "telling" quote from the piece linked to immediately above: "When told what Gibbs had said, Portis didn't know the decision already had been made. 'I thought it was a game-time decision,' he said. 'As of now, my bag's packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain't going.' Last week, it was just the opposite. Portis spent several days downplaying his chances to make the season opener, saying he was not in football shape and had yet to recover from a partially dislocated left shoulder that caused him to miss nearly all of preseason. But after the final practice, Gibbs sprung a surprise, saying Portis had tested the shoulder sufficiently and would play as a backup to Betts. Portis carried 10 times for 39 yards in the 19-16 loss to the Vikings, but he has complained of soreness all week. 'I can't do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas,' said Portis, pointing at the equipment bag in front of his locker. 'We have seen some miracle days happen. This ain't no situation for me not to be playing in.'" This just doesn't sound right and, as such, doesn't portend good things in the long-run for this relationship. I mean Portis is a VALUABLE fantasy player, but this is a situation fantasy footballers MUST keep their eye on, a wary eye that is. Stay tuned...

Portis expects to be at full-speed this week against the woeful Texans... From "The REAL Feed": Texans can expect 'full-throttle Portis,' 'Skins RB says ESPN: NFL (21.09.2006 19:19) Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis practiced again Thursday and pronounced himself ready for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. I would be cautious, however, about the hype right now. Unless this game is a tight one, all this talk could be for naught. Portis has two things (potentially) working against him this week. One, there is the injury, which don't see as being 100% healed (all of a sudden). But, two, if they go ahead BIG or fall behind BIG, they'll probably pull him. Furthermore, Duckett was one of the Redskins bright spots against the Cowboys. He could be good in a Gibbs-run system. I could see him spelling Portis... on the goal-line.

I updated my Redskins report midweek with respect to Hall (as reported above as well) and a free agent recommendation. Check it out.

I really wonder what kind of future he has with the team... We all kind of know that Portis and Gibbs are NOT the "best of friends"... |
| This is great news for Redskin fans. Most people are surprised he is going to be sticking around. In the short term, this is bad news for Betts owners in keeper leagues. What could of been a hell of a RB on another team is now just destined to be a back up. However, to your point Steg, in the long term he may turnout to be something. There is always the possibility that Portis will get traded. (maybe that is why they got Duckett?) But if Portis and Betts are on the same team, then Portis is clearly the better back.
