CB Nate Clements is a Niner!  And the highest paid defensive player in NFL history!

Straight off the official 49ers website:
49ers Make First Free Agent Moves

The Niners also signed S Michael Lewis!

Niners sign Ashley Lelie:

Tracking the comings and goings in free agency
Free-agent wide receiver Ashley Lelie signed a two-year deal with the 49ers for $4.3 million, including a $2 million signing bonus.

NE dropped Banta-Cain and added Adalius Thomas (for a whole lot of money) to replace him.

From your article:  "Banta-Cain could play a prominent role in San Francisco's revamped 3-4 defence as an outside linebacker and pass-rusher."

Just what the Niners still needed, and at a much lower price.  I like what Nolan's defensive mind is doing in free agency so far.

I can't find the link now, with just a quick pass.  But here is a neat little blurb that a buddy of mine sent me when Gore got his new deal:

ESPN.com has reported that the 49ers have reached an agreement with Frank Gore to extend the contract of their star running back. Pretty much under the radar by NFL standards, Gore ran for 1,695 yards and averaged 5.43 yards per carry during the 2006 season.

Don't just sail past those numbers; they're special. Only five other players in NFL history have enjoyed seasons in which they reached the Gore levels for both rushing yards and yards per carry: Jim Brown (1963), O.J. Simpson (1973 and 1975), Walter Payton (1977), Eric Dickerson (1984) and Barry Sanders (1994 and 1997).

He may not get as many touches in 2007, but the comparison stats are pretty interesting.

RB Gore breaks hand

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=/nfl/n ews/ABN4094284.htm

He should be OK late in the pre-season, and the 9ers will use the time to evaluate other RBs at depth.

For those of you, like me, who were eyeing up the 49ers defense this year as a DEEP sleeper, perhaps we need to reevaluate...  From "The REAL Feed":

Franklin's knee injury could be problematic for Niners' 3-4 defense

S Darnell Bing and RB Thomas Clayton waived!

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nfl/ne ws/abn4100054.htm

If Bing is healthy, I'd expect to see him picked up somewhere.  They grabbed him pretty fast when he was dropped by the Raiders, but maybe they learned something after that.  (I expected to see a lot from him as a Raider, too.  Sounds like health problems.)

And I thought that Clayton was going to push Robinson or at least stick around for depth.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him picked up elsewhere at all.  If he is and it's a good system for him, keep an eye on him.
