Well,... in stark contrast to this horrendous Vick situation,... here,... we say, "Goodbye," to a TRUE warrior and stand-up human being, one that I have particularly fond memories of: Martin to make it official, retire from Jets, NFL ESPN: NFL (24.07.2007 09:52) Jets running back Curtis Martin, the fourth leading rusher in NFL history who hasn't played since the 2005 season, will make it official this week and announce his retirement from the NFL. Well before there was ever "the Gridiron", I remember (and I'm tearing up right now reminiscing about my life) taking Curtis Martin in the 4th round of the 1995 GBRFL Restocking Draft and another one of my beloved players Robert Smith, I believe, in the 7th. I'm sure I still have the tattered notebook somewhere back in New Jersey. I won Championships with them both. Moreover, I can recall that Sunday almost like it was yesterday. I was not the usual draft central. It was my first year, a 24-year-old kid, in this upstairs apartment in South Korea. Again, I didn't live on a base. As a teacher, I lived right out with the Koreans in their society. Point being, I was just about the only person floating around in "that environment", so to speak, participating in anything like this, and not merely participating, but LOVING it. I spent a wonderful day on the phone with wonderful friends I've maintained and made because of this wonderful hobby we share. In any event, I can still picture the rust-color panels of the living room, if you can call it that, of this dingy apartment. I can still hear the static in the phone which was reaching out over a half a world, and I can still picture the notebook in which I had my player lists and the fantasy mags I had my mom send me. In particular, one had a yellow cover and cut-out cards of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice in it. I might not have chosen it, but my mom did because she knew I'd like the cards, and she was right. Remember this was before the internet era (at least for me). I still remember the crack of dawn that morning because of the odd hour of day I was participating. The core group was getting together on a Saturday afternoon back in Jersey. For me, that was dawn Sunday morning into midday. I don't remember who I took first, second or third, but I remember, like it was yesterday, a whole WORLD away, quite literally, on a staticy phone saying the name(s) Curtis Martin (and Robert Smith). Bye, Curtis,... we'll miss you and the kind of player you were... And, thank you, for taking me back to a "place" that still exists... in me...
