by Tony Onisko Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:00 on Sun Dec 30 2007 News: Week #16: Cowboys vs. Skins Fantasy Football Slant: With home field advantage wrapped up, most of the prime time players will be limited in playing time this week. Romo will play at most a half. Barber will play until he gets a 1000 yds for the season(he only needs 19yds). Owens is out. Terry Glenn will be playing his first game of the season and I expect him to interduce himself to a few of Romo's passes. Witten might try to be the second TE in NFL history to have 100 receptions in a single season, so he might be worth a look. Nick Folk is probably the only Cowboy worth starting because he will play the entire game, kickers! I would also pass on the defense this week because Newman and Watkins are out and I would guess that some of the other starters will get some rest as well. Good Luck! Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:00 on Sat Dec 22 2007 News: Week #16: The Cowboys Travel To Carolina Fantasy Football Slant: For more than a decade, the Dallas Cowboys have struggled late in the year. They insist they're not worried about that happening this season. The Cowboys look to put a loss behind them and position themselves for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs when they visit the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. I hate to say it, but even though Dallas is 12-2, this is a must win. Dallas can clinch home-field throughout the playoffs if they win out. Considering the Cowboys have never won a playoff game (0-5) at Lambeau Field, home-field advatage could mean the difference between going or not going to the Super Bowl. We will find out this week if Tony Romo is really like Brett Favre. Can he play hurt? I think he can and I think he bounces back from last week and puts up 250yds and 2 TD's. I think the Cowboys return to a more balanced offense this week, which means more carries for Marion Barber and that makes him a #2. Terrell Owens, #1, is due for a big week, especially after sticking Jessica Simpson's foot in his mouth. Jason Witten will justify his pro bowl award with 80yds and a TD. Nick Folk has been solid all year and is worth a start against a struggling Panthers defense. I think the Cowboys defense is a great start the week, even without Roy Williams. The Carolina offense has been ineffcient all year and they are starting their third string QB. I see the Cowboys making a statement and laying the lumber on the Panthers, 31-10. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 14:10 on Mon Dec 17 2007 News: Week #15: So sorry! On vacation, be back for Week #16 Time & Date of this Update (PST): 23:20 on FRI DEC 07 2007 News: Week #14: The Cowboys Visit Kitna And The Lions Fantasy Football Slant: After becoming the first NFC team to secure a playoff berth, the Cowboys look to clinch their first NFC East title since 1998 and improve their chances for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs when they visit the reeling Detroit Lions on Sunday. Tony Romo passed for 309 yards and four touchdowns last week and should have similar success against a Lions defense that allowed Tarvaris Jackson to pass for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Unless you have Tom Brady, you start Tony every week! Marion Barber is averaging nearly 16 carries per game in his last five and is a good # 2 RB. The Lions' secondary doesn't have a prayer at slowing down Terrell Owens, who has 11 scores in his last seven games. Detroit's given up 10 passing TDs in their last four games. Owens is going to eat them up. Patrick Crayton has been a touchdown magnet when he's been healthy. The Cowboys have too many weapons for Detroit to stop, so expect Crayton to continue playing well. Jason Witten has only scored twice in his last seven games but should be in line for an easy score this week making him a #1 TE. Nick Folk is leading the NFL with 107 points and is a must start #1 PK. Defensively, this matchup is perfect for Dallas. The Cowboys are No. 2 in interceptions with 18 and No. 4 in sacks with 33. They are facing a quarterback in Jon Kitna who leads the NFL with 46 sacks and has thrown 13 interceptions. And Kitna will be without his favorite wide receiver in Roy Williams (knee), so expect Dallas to attack. The Cowboys DST has a touchdown, seven sacks and four interceptions in the past three games. Detroit also is tied for the NFL lead with 31 fumbles. Jon Kitna's face and words have been on the Cowboy player's minds all week. I expect Kitna's body to be slung all over Ford Field on Sunday! Dallas wins big, 37-17. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 21:30 on Wed Nov 28 2007 News: Week #13: "Boys" vs. "Pack" for Home Field Advantage Fantasy Football Slant: The big game is here. The Cowboys and Packers game is the first time two 10-1 teams have met since 1990. The winner of the game gets the inside track to homefield advantage in the NFC playoffs. A Cowboys victory against the Packers would also clinch them a playoff spot. A Cowboys victory and a loss by the Giants on Sunday would clinch them the NFC East title as well. Considering the way these two teams match up, I think we have the makings of an ol' fashioned Texas shootout. Expect a lot of passing and a lot of points in this game. I would start every offensive player on both Dallas and Green Bay with the exception of both teams starting running backs. No one runs well on Dallas; they've allowed five rushing TDs this year and have been rushed on the third fewest times of any team. While the Packers have given up a lot more rushing yards on the season, they have only allowed four rushing TDs this year. To make it simple, START: Romo, Owens, Crayton, Witten, and Folk. I would avoid starting the Cowboys' defense this week. If you have other options, use them! I think this will be a great game to watch, if you can watch it that is! I am fortunate enough to "have" the NFL Network, so I will definately be in front of my TV at 5:15pm on Thursday night! I believe Dallas will continue to own Brett Favre(he has never won in Dallas) and they will improve to 11-1 with a 27-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers! Time & Date of this Update (PST): 17:45 on Wed Nov 21 2007 News: Week #12: Cowboy Fans Have A Lot To Be Thankful For! Fantasy Football Slant: The Dallas Cowboys have never started a season 10-1 in the storied history of the franchise. Dallas will get that chance Thursday when it hosts the New York Jets in the Cowboys' traditional Thanksgiving Day game. If Dallas (9-1) needed a reminder to not look ahead to its looming matchup with fellow NFC heavyweight Green Bay next week, it got it on Sunday as the Jets (2-8) upset previously 7-2 Pittsburgh. Tony Romo is the highest rated QB in the NFC and is likely headed to a second straight Pro Bowl. Expect the Romo-Owens frieght train to continue to deliver the goods! The Jets stopped Willie Parker last week and I don't think Barber or Jones will have much to be thankful for on Thursday. Terrell Owens has four straight games with at least 100 receiving yards, catching eight TDs in that stretch. He is an elite WR who should never be on your bench. Jason Witten continues to be one of Romo's favorite targets and is a must start against New York. Nick Folk has been quiet the last few weeks, but I expect the Jet defense to stop a few Dallas drives leaving Folk with more FG opportunities. The Jets are expected to be without Laveranues Coles (ankle), and Thomas Jones isn't going to have much success running the ball. A short week of practice combined with traveling to Dallas should make for a poor offensive performance this week. The Dallas defense is a #1 this week! The Cowboys will crush the Jets 34-7 and the starters will be sitting on the bench in the fourth quarter waiting to play the Packers next week! Time & Date of this Update (PST): 11:50 on SAT Nov 17 2007 News: Week #11: The Skins come to Big "D" Fantasy Football Slant: The Dallas Cowboys have put some distance between themselves and their NFC East foes the past two weeks, beating Philadelphia and New York to go two games up in the division. On Sunday, the Cowboys try to make it three straight wins over their closest pursuers in the East when they host the Washington Redskins. In his first full year as a starter, Romo has thrown for 2,555 yards - third-most in the NFL - and leads the NFC in quarterback rating (103.3) and touchdown passes (23). He is a #1 QB, keep starting him! Nothing exciting about Barber or Jones, they are both #3 RB's in my opinion; if you have other options, use them. Terrell Owens tops the conference with 855 receiving yards and is tied for the NFC lead with eight touchdowns. A clear #1 WR and a must start. Patrick Clayton has been playing well over the past few weeks. He is a #2 WR this week facing a Redskins defense without Sean Taylor that is allowing 218.3 yards a game through the air to rank 22nd in the league. Jason Witten is a top tier TE and is a solid start every week. The Cowboys defense is starting to play to their potential. This unit has been getting healthy and gelling over the last few weeks. I think they will put lots of pressure on the young Jason Campbell, forcing him to make mistakes and turnovers. The front seven will contain Clinton Portis and the Defense will be a solid start for your fantasy team! The Cowboys knock off another NFC East opponent, 28-10, making the Green Bay Packer game in two weeks the N.F.C game of the year. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 16:50 on FRI Nov 9 2007 News: Week #10: The Battle for the NFC East Fantasy Football Slant: The Cowboys will have a lot more trouble with the Giants this week than they did in their Week 1 track meet. The Giants haven't lost since Week 2, but this season they have played 3 teams with winning records(Cowboys, Packers, Redskins) and they are 1-2, barely beating the Redskins. The Giant's defense now ranks among the league's leaders in many defensive departments -- including sacks, where they have an NFL-best 30. In their first two games, both losses, the Giants hemorrhaged 80 points; in their past six, all wins, they allowed 79. As for the Cowboys, they're playing great football right now. Other than the near-loss at Buffalo and the whipping vs. New England, they've beaten everyone they've played by at least 10 points. Tony Romo hasn't shown any drop off after signing his big contract and he should continue to produce over 250yds and 2 TD's this week, making him a #1 QB. The Barber & Jones duo both got a piece of the endzone last week and I expect the Cowboys to pound the ball against a New York defense which gives up 4.2 ypc. I expect both players to have between 60 and 70 total yards with Barber reaching pay dirt. T.O. always steps up in the big games, so a 100yds and a score should be automatic, #1 WR. Jason Witten is making a case for himself for the Pro Bowl. In the week one meeting he had 116 yards and a score, this week 80 total yards and a score should make him a high scoring TE. Nick Folk is a top 5 kicker this season, but the Meadowlands wind has been known to eat up kickers, expect a drop off this week. The Cowboy pass defense is getting close to being totally healthy, which should help them this week against the Giants. Week #10 will also mark Tank Johnson's debut as a Cowboy. This will probably be a high scoring affair, so if you have another option at D/ST use it. I expect Dallas to continue to roll through the N.F.C. East. The Cowboys will end up 8-1 with a 28-17 win over the Giants. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 15:13 on Sat Oct 27 2007 News: Week #8: Bye Week Time & Date of this Update (PST): 22:24 on Sat Oct 20 2007 News: Week #7: The Vikings come to Town Fantasy Football Slant: If you had told me before Week: #6 that Adrian Peterson would top 220 rush yards on the Bears, I would have told you to go straight to the nut house. But Peterson was able to find huge seams against Chicago and made them pay; don't expect him to do the same against Dallas. The Cowboys will aim to do what the Bears couldn't: Slow down Minnesota's run game and force Tarvaris Jackson to pass. Dallas' pass defense ranks 24th thanks to Tom Brady hanging five scores on them last week, but they should be able to clamp down on the Vikings. Dallas knows that running the ball against Minnesota will be a nightmare, so that's only going to make Tony Romo's day that much better since the Cowboys will throw early and often. Romo is a high #1, so expect 250+ yds and atleast 2 TD's. Minnesota is No. 2 against the run and should limit both Cowboys running backs this week. The Vikings are the only team yet to allow a rushing touchdown this year. Stay away from both Barber and Jones! The Cowboys have the receivers to make Minnesota's 32nd-ranked pass defense pay! Owens and Crayton are both high #2's. Crayton has actually outplayed Terrell Owens the past three weeks. He has 18 catches for 303 yards and four touchdowns in that span, while Owens has 11 catches for 124 yards and one touchdown. Both wideouts should dominate this matchup. Jason Witten is a #1 and should post solid yardage totals with a possible TD. Folk kicked two more FG's last week along with 3 PAT's, he is a must start and should be considered a #1. The Dallas defense got abused last week and I'm sure they are more than motivated to make a stand against the Vikings. This units weakness is in the secondary. The front seven is solid and should be able to slow down "all day" Peterson! I would rank them as a #2, so if you don't have a stronger "D", they shouldn't lose you any points this week. The Cowboys want to remind the rest of the NFC that they are still the team to beat! The "Boys" bounce back with a 24-14 win! Time & Date of this Update (PST): 13:35 on Sat Oct 13 2007 News: Week #6: The Duel in Dallas Fantasy Football Slant: This is the game everyone has been waiting for. However, as much as I want this to be a close game there are a lot of things working against Dallas and if this game were in New England everyone would be calling for a Patriots blowout. The Cowboys have home-field advantage going for them but not much else. Romo is coming off a near-disaster and New England coach Bill Belichick thrives on disrupting young, talented quarterbacks. Can you remember how many times Belichick made Peyton Manning look foolish? Coach Belichick will throw a lot of different looks at Romo. New England just does so much to confuse an opposing team that the Cowboys, who have been in fewer big-game situations, will have trouble making adjustments. By the time they do, the Patriots will have the Cowboys right where they want them. Romo has a bright future, but this week won't be part of that. That being said, Romo will most likely have a few interceptions, but still have over 200yds and probably 2 TD's, which in fantasy terms is still a good day! I would expect both Julius Jones and Marion Barber to have modest days on the ground, in the area of 70 total yards a piece due to the Cowboys abandoning the run and trying to play catch up through the air. Terrel Owens has avioded the media this week, but warned us to, "Getcha Popcorn Ready", so I expect T.O. to perform on this big stage to the tune of 100+yds and 1-2 TD's. Patrick Crayton will grab a few balls for 60-70 yds. Jason Witten has developed into Romo's favorite target and he will continue his hot streak with 80yds and a possible score. The hero of last weeks miracle win, Nick Folk, is a #1 kicker who should kick 2 FG's and have a couple extra points. Up to this point of the season, the Cowboys defense has been solid and kept teams from the "big" plays. Last week, the Bills only scored 3 points on offense, so sometimes the score(25-24) doesn't tell the whole story. However, without Anthony Henry and a 80% healthy Terrance Newman lining up against Randy Moss, the Dallas defense is not a good start this week! I expect that the veteren lead Patriots will win this match-up 34-28. Although, when these two teams meet each other in the Super Bowl, the defense with a hungry and rested Tank Johnson, a healthy Anthony Henry and Terrance Newman will lead the Cowboys to the title! Time & Date of this Update (PST): 22:25 on Fri Oct 5 2007 News: Week #5: The Boys and the Bills battle on Monday night! Fantasy Football Slant: The Cowboys are 4-0 for the first time since their last Super Bowl season a dozen years ago and a win Monday night would give them their first 5-0 start since 1983, when Tom Landry was still the coach. Through the first 4 games, the "Boys" have averaged roughly 38 points and 441 total yards per game. The Cowboys' 151 points are 22 more than the NFL record-holding 1998 Minnesota Vikings had at the same point. This weeks match-up against the Bills, who rank dead last against the pass and 27th against the run, should help Dallas stay on their record setting pace. When it comes to a Cowboys' offensive player, "start'em if you got'em." Romo is currently the #1 Fantasy QB and I would expect between 275-325 yds passing and 2-3 TD's. Barber is a solid #2 this week and he should score his 5th rushing touchdown on Monday. Jones is continuing to start and get his carries, but he is no more than a low #3 because he can't even find the endzone! Terrell Owens is a #1 and should expose Buffalo's beat up secondary for over a 100yds and a score. We finally had a Patrick Crayton sighting last week. While last week's game wasn't indicative of his role in the Dallas offense; you probably can expect 3 catches for 50+ yds and a possible TD. Jason Witten already owns three touchdowns, and he'll be facing a team that has allowed 2 previous TE touchdowns. Fantasy owners can expect another Witten trip to paydirt, along with a solid yardage total. Considering the way the Cowboys are moving the ball, kicker, Nick Folk, is a starter every week. The Cowboys should have had a shutout last week against St. Louis if not for a touchdown on special teams. Although the Bills offense showed some life against the Jets with Trent Edwards in his first start at quarterback, they still are the No. 31-ranked offense and the Dallas defense is a must start! The Cowboys are riding high, but they have a look-ahead game next week with the Patriots. They need to be careful here. The primetime match-up is enough to keep the "Boys" focused and they win 31-10. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 20:23 on Fri Sep 28 2007 News: Week #4: The Rams limp into Dallas Fantasy Football Slant: The Cowboys are returning home after two impressive road wins and have a record of 3-0 coming into week #4. While facing the ailing St. Louis Rams on Sunday may seem like an automatic win, in order to extend their record to 4-0, the Cowboys will have to prepare to play as if they still were the underdogs they were against Chicago last Sunday. There is no longer any doubt that Romo is a must-start fantasy quarterback. Although tied for last with a 0-3 record, the Rams lead the league in pass defense, allowing 146 yards per game, but they have yet to record an interception. Romo is a #1 and should put up 200yds and 2 TD's.. Marion Barber is making a case to be the man in Dallas, but both backs should see plenty of carries because I expect most of the 4th quarter will be spent handing the ball off in a game the Cowboys will have locked up before then. Marion should be a high #2 with 70 total yards and a TD with Julius Jones being a low #3 with about 90 total yards. Romo to Owens is one of the top QB-WR connections in the game and Terrell Owens is a high #1 every week! Considering that he didn't make it into the endzone last week, I expect Owens to "celebrate" at home this week with 100 yds and a TD. I wouldn't expect anything from Patrick Crayton who has failed to impress while filling in for the injured Terry Glenn. Second year man, Sam Hurd, should see more time and more yards! Jason Witten is off to the best start of his career and is a low #1 or high #2. Rookie place kicker, Nick Folk, has been a pleasant surprise and should make for a good start this week against the Rams. The Cowboys defense is getting healthier every week and they are leading the NFL with 10 turnovers. The Boys will be facing a Rams team with a hurt QB(2 broken ribs), a rookie RB(Leonard), a dismantled O-line(without Pace), and a banged up WR(Holt). I expect the Cowboys defense to be a quality start this week. With the Cowboys at 3-0 and the Rams at 0-3, this game screams letdown, but I don't think the Rams have the horses to keep it close. The "Boys" win this game 27-13! News: Week #3: Sorry that there is no report. I am in the middle of moving and I do not have internet access. Look Forward To Seeing You Next Week Time & Date of this Update (PST): 20:55 on Thur Sep 13 2007 News: Week #2: Dallas travels to Miami Fantasy Football Slant: Lets get this out of the way, anybody who guesses, predicts, expects, or prophecies' what is going to happen in Week #1 of the N.F.L. is partaking in actions that are hazardous to your health! It is next to impossible to accurately project what is going to happen after watching 4 to 5 preseason games that utilize vanilla offenses, non-blitzing defenses, and truthfully; the games themselves become more about revenue than player analysis. So, I spared you my worthless attempt last week and I hope to give you a more informed opinion on what is in store for the "Boys" this weekend! This week's game will be in sunny Miami, but the forecast calls for possible rain and thunder showers, so weather might end up being a factor in the game! Last week, the Cowboys offense exploded for 478 yards and 45 points. The Boy's two brightest stars, Romo and Owens, shined bright! Tony Romo completed 15 of 24 passes for a career-high 345 yards and four touchdowns - two of them to Terrell Owens. Expect both players to be high #1's again this week! Julius Jones and Marion Barber both had decent days, about 60 yards rushing a piece and Barber continued to evolve into a touchdown vulture with one score. I would consider both backs low #2's to high #3's. Last week, tight end Jason Witten continued to be one of Romo's favorite targets with 116 yards receiving and a TD. I expect him to run his routes between Jason Taylor and Zack Thomas for big gains making him a low #1. Patrick Crayton is filling in for the injured Terry Glenn and I wouldn't expect much from him, probably low #3 or high #4. The new and improved defense did not show up in week #1 giving up 35 points and 438 yards. Making matters more difficult, the Cowboys lost nose tackle Jason Ferguson for the season after he tore his right biceps muscle. Two other defensive starters, cornerback Terence Newman (foot) and outside linebacker Greg Ellis (Achilles'), missed the opener but could return for this contest. I would stay clear of the Cowboy's "D" until Newman is back and fully healthy! The Dallas Cowboys will start the regular season 2-0 for the first time since 1999. Wow! 28-10. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 21:13 on Wed Aug 22 2007 News: Team Player Projections Fantasy Football Slant: This analysis is based on your average 10- to 12-team league and standard scoring, with touchdowns and yardage being evenly weighted. The "Projected Fantasy Role" is where you should plan on lining that player up on your fantasy team from week to week. |
- Position- - | - Player- - | Projected Fantasy Role - | - Comments - | | QB | Tony Romo | High #1 | Romo has the physical abilities, talented offensive weapons, and a good line, which should allow him to be a top 10 QB. | | QB | Brad Johnson | High #3 | Could be a valuable handcufff. The Cowboys didn't resign Romo this offseason when they had the chance, so if he starts the 2007 season the way he ended 2006, he might play his way to the bench! Don't forget Johnson was a starter last year! | | RB | Julius Jones | Low #2 | History has shown that contract years = production. The new coach and offensive scheme will let Jones catch more balls and actually get some red zone touches! I have a feeling that Jones will seperate himself from Barber this season. | | RB | Marion Barber III | High #3 | I believe that Barber's yardage numbers will be similar, but he will not score 16 rushing TD's this year because Jones will steal some of his goal line carries. | | WR | Terrell Owens | High #1 | Owens lead the NFL in Recieving TD's(13) last year and I expect him to get even more this year! Phillip's plans on using Owens at all 3 WR positions like he did with the 49ers and Eagles, so I expect all of his stats to increase this season. | | WR | Terry Glenn | High #3 | Glenn still has the speed to get behind defenses and he has averaged about 70 yards a game the last 3 years. I expect Glenn to be a solid #3 WR and match his 6 TD's from last year. | | WR | Patrick Crayton | High #4 | When given the chance, Crayton has caught everything thrown his way. Another contract year player who should be playing for a starting role in 2008. Considering Owens and Glenn are both 33, injuries could force him into a starting role. | | WR | Sam Hurd | #5 | Young wideout with long, lean, flexible build. They call him "noodle"! He might not make an impact this year but has potential for keeper leagues. | | TE | Jason Witten | High #2 | Witten will most likely be at the top of the second tier TE's. His numbers increased after the switch to Romo as QB, so expect his catches and yardage stats to be good, but with T.O. in the red zone his TD potential will be low. | | PK | Nick Folk | Low #3 | 6th round pick with very strong leg. Will most likely win the battle vs. Gramatica because of his length on kickoffs. Folk currently is 2 for 2 on FG's with a 52 yarder during the preseason. | | D/ST | ---------- | Low #1 | I think the change to Wade Phillip's style of 3-4 defense(which lead the league in sacks in 2006) which emphasizes speed and quickness over strength and size will create an increase in sacks and turnovers. The addition of Ken Hamlin should erase the tendancy to give up big plays because he is better in pass coverage then Roy Williams. Williams will play closer to the line of scrimage and put pressure on opposing QB's. The return game will be average, but I expect the Defense to score a few more TD's this year! | Link to archived "Cowboys FF-specific Team Reports" by former Cowboys correspondent Gene Nestro: http://www.ffpro.com/teamreports/cowboys/cowboys-updates.htm.
