News: Play Brees, Bench Bush

Fantasy Football Slant:
It is hard to predict who will win between the Saints and the Panthers.  But from a fantasy perspective, it will be a good week to start Brees (Low #1) and Colston (High #1).  Brees, despite the team's Win-Loss record, has been consistent in his passing game.  He has stayed near 300 yards each week with at least 1 TD; he is a definite start.  Colston has also been a big producer for the passing game.  Bush, on the other hand, will need closer consideration.  He has been okay on the passing game, and with the weak secondary of the Panthers, he may be part of the passing game plan.  But his rushing has been weak and I think that he could lose games as a running back.  I would bench him.

The Saints are losing because they have poor defense. Winning or losing for the Saints this week once again depends on the D.

News: Saints has no Defense, they need a good offense

Fantasy Football Slant:
You have to admit that the loss to the Rams last week was unexpected.  But from a fantasy perspective it wasn't a bad week. Brees (High #1) threw for 272 yards and two TDs; not a bad outing for the passing game.  Colston (High #)1 had 129 yards recieving.  TEs Eric Johnson (High #2) and B. Miller (No Rating) each caught a TD pass.  RBs Bush (a High #2) and Stecker each rushed for a touchdown.  Bush is a risk for a start this week because he has had limited time in practice due to a sore left knee.  Brees and the receiving corps are a pretty good bet for a start this week (Brees has pulled himself up to the #4 ranked QB in the NFL).  I have come to believe that the Saints need to feel the pressure before they really step up and perform.  The Texans are certainly more potent adversary than the Rams, let's hope it brings out the best in the offense.

The Siants could have won last week if not for the poor performance of the defense. Winning or losing for the Saints this week depends on the D.

News: Another big week of numbers for the Saints' offense

Fantasy Football Slant:
This is almost too easy this week.  The Saints are playing the worst team in the league after orchestrating a big turn around. Brees (High #1 and a definite start this week) has emerged from the doldrums.  Start all the other Saints this week.  One note, Bush's rushing number are average, but he is the number two on the roster for receptions; he will have big numbers.  Another emerging talent is Patten and is one to keep your eye on.  I expect that he will become a key player for the Saints in the near term.  Brees already ops to him more often than Henderson.

The Defense is decent, but hey... they're playing the Rams.

News: Saints' momentum could carry them to more big numbers

Fantasy Football Slant:
It appears that the Saints offense has finally emerged from its offensive funk, but Brees (High #2) has yet prove he can be consistent.  This week will be a tough week for Bush (Low #1); Jacksonville has been tough against the rush this year and now Bush is carrying the bulk of the running game on his shoulders.  He should have a decent week, but don't expect a stellar performance.  This will be a week to start any one you may have from the receiving corps: Brees, Colston (High #1), Henderson (Low #1), Johnson (Low #1) and Patten (Low #2) (a reciever as of late who is getting some press and some passes).  They have the skill and Jacksonville is weak against the pass.  If the offensive line can give Brees the time, he and his receivers should produce good number this week.

The Defense is decent.  They have been tough against the pass.  This may force Jacksonville to the ground game and prevent a big pass attack from the Jags.

News: Saints riding high on a two game winning streak

Fantasy Football Slant:
The Saints are riding the momentum on a two game winning streak.  This week should be a productive week for Brees (High #4).  He has a lot of options open to him this week but Colston (Low #1) injured his back last week; that may slow him down this week.  This will give some of the other receivers an opportunity to step up.  Johnson (High #3) is ranked second among NFC tight ends and he will be facing his old team.  I would definitely play him this week.  Henderson (High #2) will have to step up with Colston injured, I expect he'll get a TD this week.   Patton, Moore and Copper, all (Low #4s) will also have a opportunities this week. Patton has proven to be potent.  Robert Meacham (Low #4), the Saints 1st round pick this year, will finally step onto the field this week.  He will be one to watch.  The Running Backs will have a good week.  Bush (Low #1) will have a 100 yard game this week and at least 1 TD.  He is they key to the Saints Offense.  Stecker and Thomas (Low #4s) are producing but they won't win you any fantasy games.  This will be the week to start Brees, Henderson, Bush, and Colston.

The Defense is not a highly ranked, but this week they will face the 49ers, who have one of the worst offenses in the league.

News:  New horizons for the Saints Offense

Fantasy Football Slant:
The improvement by the Saints last week is still no indication that Brees and co are on the march.  They did defeat the Seahawks who were expected to win but I don't expect this to be a turning point for the problems plaguing the Saints.  One positive note, Brees (High #4) did make a substantive improvement in his passing game.  He had over 200 yards and 2 TD passes. He'll be facing the Falcons this week, so it may be another opportunity to shine.  I'll raise him to a high #3;  this may be a good week to start him.  Bush had 97 yards rushing, a decent day.  He should be able to duplicate that against Atlanta.  The big surprise was David Patton, a reciever I have never mentioned before, because he has produced next to nil, had a big game.  I give him a Low #4, but he his another set of hands for Brees.  In short, this week play Brees, Colston (Low #1),  Henderson (High #2), and Bush (Low #1), They are facing the Falcons who are struggling, so the Saints offense will have the opportunity to capitalize on the improvements made against the Seahawks.

The Defense is not a highly ranked, but this week they will face the Falcons, who aren't doing so hot.

News:  Another loss for the Saints?

Fantasy Football Slant:
If you haven't by now, it may be time to put away Drew Brees (High #4)  He had one touchdown last week, but it is hardly indicative of a turn around.  He faced the struggling Panthers last week and still came away with a loss.  He is ranked 18 among the NFLs QBs, and is not even close in points to the rest of the field.  I expect the Seattle defense to put a lot of pressure on him, forcing him to rush his passes.  It is, therefore, hard to endorse any receivers without a QB that can put it in their hands.  However if anyone has the opportunity to produce some positive percentages, expect gains from Colston (Low #1) and Henderson (High #2).  They are both reliable receivers and will get yards and points once Brees gets the ball within their reach.  Bush is now struggling (Low #2).  He is the only running threat, so the Seahawks D will easily key on him. I expect him to get shut down this week.

The Defense... still struggling.

News:  Saints offense needs some momentum

Fantasy Football Slant:
Deuce McAllister is out for the season with a torn ACL.  This is bad news for the Saints who are trying to put a constructive offense together.  Don't count on Brees for big numbers who I think now slips to a Low #2/High #3.  His O Line isn't giving him the time and he is trying to rush his passes, which was evident from the 4 INT against the Titans.  I would recommend going to another QB option this week.    Reggie Bush (Low #1) will have the opportunity to produce this week.  He has 2 TDS and he will be getting more opportunities to carry the ball because Deuce is gone.  He may have to share field time with Stecker and Thomas; both of which are career backups. Another option is #44 Karney (High #4)  He has one of the Saints 4 TDs and is a solid player. The receiving corps is inherently suffering because Brees seems unable to get the ball to them.  Colston (Low #1), Henderson (Low #3), and Johnson (High #4) are all solid receivers.  Based on my opinion of Brees, this may be the week to also look at your receiver options, a receiver can't have a big week without a QB that can put it in their hands.

The Defense is also struggling, especially in later quarters

News:  A Bye this week for the Saints

Fantasy Football Slant:
Deuce McAllister is out for the season with a torn ACL.  Hopefully a bye will give them time to regroup and prepare for the Carolina Panthers in week 5.  There are two other running backs that will be given an opportunity to step up,  #27 A. Stacker  and # 23 C. Thomas (both Low #4).  I will be watching reports this week for any potential.

News:  The Saints lackluster offense faces a tough Titan defense

Fantasy Football Slant:
On Monday night the Saints will be facing the NFL's number 7 defense against the run.  This will make it difficult for McAllister and Bush- both who have been disappointing thus far- to get more rushing yards.  Neither one has TD and their rushing numbers are low.  I am lowering their ranking slightly - Deuce (High #2) and Bush (Low #1)- because they will be facing a defense that is so tough against the run.   Colston is becoming a key player in the offense; he finally got a TD last week and he has 117 receiving yards for the season.  Henderson and Johnson had low numbers last week, so there is not many reasons to expect more this week.  My rankings for these guys remain unchanged from last week.  Quarterback Drew Brees will have another tough week.  Without a running attack to give the passing game breathing space, it makes his job that much more difficult.  He is about average in passing yards (452) for the season, but he only has 1 TD pass.  Right now he is ranked #15 in the league which I feel gives him another shaving off his FF ranking,  I'll give him a High #2.  The guys will have to really step it up this week or they risk being left behind by the leagues leading offenses.

The Defense continues to have a marginal performance.  They didn't hold the Bucs very effectively last week.

News:  A disappointing start for the Saints

Fantasy Football Slant:
It was a disappointing start for the Saints.  All of my optimism from last week was for not.  When you have been a Saints fan since the days of the 'Aint's and wearing bags on our heads, it is easy to get carried away. However, they still showed great potential last year and many of those guys have returned, so it would be premature to dump any of these guys right now.  This week, the offense will be facing the 24th ranked Buccaneer defense that allowed the Seahawks to score 20 points; maybe this will allow Brees and crew some breathing room to establish an offense that was effectively shut down last week.  They will probably look to establish the run- which the Colts did a good job of containing with a seven man defensive front- and rely on shorter passes to move the offense.  One of Coach Peyton's biggest concerns from the game with the Colts was failing to convert on 3rd downs. An established running game and play action passes underneath may be their solution. in any case, it will be a hard- hitting game against the Bucs this Sunday

QB Drews Brees- Low #1-  He showed his potential last season, but his lackluster performance against the Colts lowers my expectations- he didn't make it into the top 5 NFL QB's for the week.  He had the pass protection, but the Colts took away his opportunity to get the ball behind their secondary and into the hands of Colston and Henderson.  Look for him this week to utilize the passing game underneath to TE Eric Johnson and RB Reggie Bush.  This might effect his yardage, but if he get the short passes going, it will open the long range passing game.

RB Deuce McAllister- High #2-  He was definantely under-utilized last week.  If the Saints take the patience to set up a running game, he is going to be given the ball to run up field more often.

RB Reggie Bush- High #1-  Bush only rushed for 38 yards last week and pulled down 4 passes for 7 yards.  But like Deuce, he may get more opportunities to take the ball this week.   He is also a double threat as a reliable target in the short passing game.

WR Marques Colston- Low #1-  Colston only averaged 7.8 yards per reception.  It was disappointing and another example of how effectively the long game was shut down by the Colts.  His success will rely on the running and short order passing, but he is also going to have to get open.

WR Devery Henderson- High #3- Henderson only had 34 yards last week, but his story is the same as Colstons.

TE Eric Johnson- High #4-  His stock is rising.  When the Saints finally started to move the ball in the second half, they were using the short pass game;  Johnson was a key receiver in that momentum.  As a result he led the team with 57 receiving yards.  Despite an early fumble- he recovered it himself- he still showed some reliable hands.  If the Saints seek to establish a short game early in the game, he will be a key target for Brees.

Manning picked the Saints defense apart last week.  They are still hardly worth noting.  The Saints offense will have to score big points.

News:  Big Numbers for Brees & Co.

Fantasy Football Slant:
Look for the Saints' Offense to come charging out of the gate.  QB Brees- High #1- had extremely high completion rates.  High yardage will come from the ability of WRs Colston- High #1- and Henderson- Low #3- to turn the football upfield;  that is something that Devery Henderson is very good at.  Look for a lot of yardage out of this passing crew.  The RBs Reggie Bush- High #1 and Deuce McAllister- Low #1- will provide the Saints offense with versatility.  I expect a 100 yard rushing day for Bush, if not both running backs.  There is also a possibility for Reggie to turn some of Brees' passes into yards.

The Defense is hardly worth mentioning so look at a high scoring game for both sides.

News:  Team Player Projections

Fantasy Football Slant:
This analysis is based on your average 10- to 12-team league and standard scoring, with touchdowns and yardage being evenly weighted.  The "Projected Fantasy Role" is where you should plan on lining that player up on your fantasy team from week to week.

QB
Drew
Brees
High #1Drew may come out and be a big game player this year.  I wouldn't be surprised if he is one of the top five QBs this year.  He led the NFL in total passing yards. If he can capitalize on the consistency that he was building last year, chances are he'll be a force.
QB
Jamie
Martin
Low #4He has 13 years in the NFL but very little playing experiance.  The few times he did play he met some success.  However, his lack of experience makes him a risky Fantasy Football Pick
RB
Deuce
McAllister
Low #1A work horse and a great football player.  Ranked 20th in the league last year for rushing.  The Saints are a real football team.  Honestly picking a player from the Saints is a risk because they have so much depth. That means any player in the line up can breakout, but there is no garantee that they will produce week to week.
RB
Reggie
Bush
High #1He played in all 16 games last year.  This guy is so versatile that he ranked tenth in the league last year with a team high 88 receptions which set a record for rookie running backs.  He is also a clutch player snagging 33 receptions on 3rd down-leading the NFL.  This guy is a great pick; he can run and catch (he often lined up as a wide receiver).  He will provide any roster with versatility and depth.
WR
Marques
Colston
High #1Colston emerged from the low pick doldrums to become one of the most dynamic recievers in the league. He is the only rookie in club history to go over 1,000 yards.  He hauled in 70 catches for 1,038 yards.  He will undoubtedly be a key target for Brees in 2007.
WR
Devery
Henderson
High #3Henderson is a big play reciever who turms catches into big yards.  He had the highest yardage total with the fewest catches- a NFL high of 23.3 yards per catch.
TE
Eric
Johnson
Low #4A purportedly productive target but it will be key for him to stay off the injury list.  We'll see.
