Dolphins Offseason Report
« on: Feb 12th, 2008, 10:20am »

The Dolphins started their house-cleaning yesterday. They released 9 veterans including QB Trent Green and WR Marty Booker.

They really went after the offensive and defensive lines, releasing DT Keith Traylor, DT Anthony Bryant, and DT Marquay Love, along with OT LJ Shelton, OT Joe Toledo, OT Anthony Alabi, and OT Marion Dukes. Aside from Traylor and Shelton, these were young players with some upside still, so this may be evidence of an immediate change in philosophy for the Dolphins.

This blood-letting the Dolphins did has created a TON of cap room.  They are now $31 million under the cap and are going to make a huge splash in free agency.

Look for them to bring in the likes of Alan Faneca, Ruben Brown, and in Parcells wet dream, Flozell Adams.  On the defense, I expect they will go after Jared Allen on the line and Dansby, Briggs for the LB corp.

Parcells can make a huge difference in one year by making the cuts and signing a few of the names above.

Not to mention, he has the #1 pick in the draft which he can turn into more picks.

If the team keeps the #1 pick, they'll need a lot of that cap room to sign whichever player they draft with the out-of-control signing bonuses that the top pick now demands.

Or, as DD pointed out, the Fins could trade their #1 overall pick to Dallas (as the rumors have it now) for both of the first-rounders Dallas owns--which would also require some hefty salary cap room.

I'll be very surprised if the Chiefs don't slap a tag on Jared Allen.

The first deal done in free agency made guard Justin Smiley of the 49ers smile.

Minutes after the opening in free agency, Smiley agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with the Miami Dolphins. The deal includes $9 million of guaranteed money.

Dolphins finally got rid of Jason Taylor.  They trade Taylor to the Redskins for a 2nd round pick and 6th round pick.

Skins had to trade for Taylor because they lost their defense line starter Daniels on the first day of practice.

Here's some worthwhile fantasy rhetoric from a LOCAL daily rollin' off "The REAL Feed":

Fins' QB battle heating up
Miami Herald: Sports (20.07.2008 03:31)
With Dolphins camp opening next weekend, chatter on a six-pack of competitions for starting jobs: Quarterback: Though Josh McCown is considered by many to be the front-runner because of experience, the Dolphins have told NFL people the battle remains competitive with John Beck, and preseason per...

McCown the tentative #1... according to "The REAL Feed":

Dolphins tab McCown as No. 1 QB, for now (AP)
Yahoo! News: Democratic Party (04.08.2008 17:11)
Josh McCown is listed as the Miami Dolphins' No. 1 quarterback, for now. The Dolphins released their first depth chart of the season Monday per NFL policy, putting the seven-year veteran at the top. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano was quick to point out that the depth chart is ever-changing, and tha...

I'm happy for Chad's signing with the Fins.  He's one of the NFL's good guys... and he's already impressin'... according to "The REAL Feed":

Pennington impresses new teammates at first practice with Dolphins
NFL.com (11.08.2008 19:31)
After a workout that lasted almost two hours, Chad Pennington remained inside the team's practice bubble for about 20 extraminutes to work on routes with tight ends and wide receivers.
