49ers Offseason Report
« on: Feb 22nd, 2008, 5:03pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

"According to ESPN, the 49ers are one of three teams that may be interested in acquiring the services of wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad. ESPN states that he would likely fill the slot in San Francisco, as Mike Martz needs speed and quickness outside."
From 49ers Webzone.com - Not on the ESPN site yet.

(Should be interesting to see what Martz does as OC in SF!)

The 49ers wasted no time hitting their free agency shopping list. They agreed with Vikings linebacker Dontarrious Thomas on a two-year deal and allowed Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan to be re-united with new 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz by agreeing to a one-year, $645,000 contract. The 49ers also locked up a two-year, $1.8 million deal with former Panthers halfback DeShaun Foster and a one-year, $870,000 deal with kick-returner/cornerback Allen Rossum, a former Steeler.

This is a good signing in my opinion.  Bryant Johnson proved he could play in Arizona.  He always stepped it up when needed.

(I am bummed the Eagles did not sign him).

Plus I. Bruce coming in and D. Jackson cut.  Martz is shaping his offense.

It actually IS being labeled a "quarterback controversy" right out of the gate... according to "The REAL Feed":

Smith, Hill begin QB competition at center of 49ers' camp

Gore catching on fast to Martz's offense
http://origin.mercurynews.com/sportsheadlines/ci_9149375

The running back is the frequent target of passes, whether that means Gore comes out of the backfield or lines up as the slot receiver.

Such versatility is how Faulk blossomed into an MVP under Martz with the St. Louis Rams. Faulk lined up everywhere, even split wide, and in 1999 joined former 49ers star Roger Craig as the only backs to amass 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season.

...and

Can a pass-happy offensive coordinator still make Gore the focal point?

By way of answering, Gore smiled and turned to fellow running back Michael Robinson, who has the locker next door. "Do you think this offense is built around me," Gore asked.

Robinson nodded his head up and down repeatedly as if to say, yes, yes, yes, yes.

"It's going to be fun," Gore said.

Trent Dilfer Retires:

Is this further evidence that O'Sullivan is really going to be the '9ers guy here this year???  Seems to be according to "The REAL Feed":

49ers QB O'Sullivan to get second straight preseason start
NFL.com (14.08.2008 23:19)
J.T. O'Sullivan moved one step closer to being the 49ers starting quarterback on Kickoff weekend.

My Gawd...  More and more it's lookin' like O'Sullivan is going to be the guy...  From "The REAL Feed":

49ers' O'Sullivan finds groove, but Smith struggles
