Oldie, but a goodie RB Shaun Alexander brought in to back up Portis...  From "The REAL Feed":

Alexander brought in to fill injured Betts' backup RB role
NFL.com (14.10.2008 21:34)
Former league MVP Shaun Alexander signed with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, part of a flurry of roster activity in which the team ditched its punter, shuffled its safeties and displayed coach Jim Zorn's strong ties to his Seattle Seahawks roots.

Portis was able to practice on Friday and is going to start.  The news out of DC all week was to play it safe with Portis for practice but have him play on Sunday.

Local ABCnews here just covered the story.  I totally missed this in the news because of the bye week.     Portis is 50/50 for the week.

They showed a clip of Jim Zorn announcing that if Portis can NOT go, it will probably be multiple players filling the role.  Rock Cartwright and Shaun Alexander being the main candidates.
