Dolphins Offseason Report

I'm gonna kick off the Dolphins thread here with a little commentary (as opposed to the usual Feed copy-and-paste)... Regarding the running backfield, the conventional wisdom, based on an early offseason local report, is that Ronnie Brown's touches in '09 will go way up while Ricky Williams's will go way down, significantly increasing Brown's fantasy value while relegating Williams to fantasy irrelevance. They are basing that on how many carries the two respectively received in the playoff game (even though Brown was miserable while Williams found some success) and, oddly, the fact that Brown is entering the final year of his contract. That second part doesn't make any sense, and in fact the latest news is that they are willing to move him in a trade if the right deal is offered. People wonder why... It's because of that contract situation. Now, I don't think they'll end up (coming close to) moving him. But, assuming he remains in Miami, that contract situation, until it is settled, isn't reason to believe he will be better off in terms of touches vis-a-vis Williams in 2009, quite the contrary in fact. Now, don't get me wrong... I'm not pitching Williams here. I'm just saying that, all things equal, I think they both end up having 2009 campaigns very similar to their 2008 seasons, and in fact, contrary to that aforementioned conventional wisdom, there is a little reason to believe that their touches even even out a little bit more in '09, at least if no deal gets done between Brown and the Dolphins heading into the season, and the number of carries the two respectively received in that playoff game bares no relevance on the situation. In short, if/when Brown gets a new deal, a contract extension, then it's Brown's backfield, but, if not, I expect more of the same out of Brown and Williams in '09, with, actually, perhaps a few less touches going Brown's way and a few more going Williams's.
