We've all got one.
A drafting "system".
Rules of thumb that we follow and believe in.
For me?
I always ... barring a completely idiotic move in front of me ... draft:
1st round: RB
2nd round: RB
3rd round: D
4th round: QB
This system has served me well for many, many years.
IMO - you can never have too many running backs, QBs are the most over-rated position in fantasy fotball, and D the most under-rated.
How about you?

Well seeing as you kicked my ass this year, I'm a believer in your system.  
I think a lot of it depends on your drafting rank and the choices players make ahead of you. Every draft is different and you have to be ready to react and adjust to your situation. I'm only in my second year of fantasy sports, but I learned this year that RB's are crucial to the success of your team. Like you said, you can never have enough quality backs. I also agree that D is much underrated, but 3rd round is a bit high for me. From what I've seen, most people don't even look at D's till the middle rounds. I usually wait till the 5th or 6th and always get a good one. For instance, this season I drafted D's in the 5th round of both of my leagues and got the Steelers in one and Bears in the other (Both great picks at the time, but didn't work out as I had hoped.  ) The good news is, I was able to pick up Tampa in the 8th  and they single handedly took me to the big show. So yes, D's are underrated in my book as well. As for QB's, well I took 'em in the first round of both of my leagues and got burned with Culpepper and Garcia. I won't make that mistake again.

The strategy of taking a D late is by far the most common in fantasy football.
Personally, I look at "cut-off"s.
The point at which there's a HUGE drop-off in talent.
And there is no "cut-off point" at any position like with a defense.
The point at which you will far outmatch whoever your opponent starts.
For D's - this is typically 2. Maybe 3 teams.
This year for example, it was Philly and the Bucs.
If I start Philly, and my oponent starts, say, Dallas, I will almost certainly outscore him by a whole lot of points.
Many times, this will be more points than he can recover from with his other players.
And isn't outscoring your opponent what it's all about?
PLUS: a great "D" is money-in-the bank.
Every week. Week in. Week out.
WITHOUT the injury problem.
You never lose a defense for the season.
As Ron Popiel says: "Set it and forget it". 
How many owners get burned every season by taking some "stud" QB or RB - only to have them blow out a knee in week 3? Or simply collapse like Warner this year.
Do not fear a "lock" on points in the 3rd round, just because it's a defense, and not some marquee player.
This, anyway, is my take on it.
SPECIAL NOTE: And Walker_Boh ... do NOT listen to a single word of this. It is a complete and total lie! Only a fool would take a defense that early!

First, though I think you have a point regarding making sure to get a good defense, I think, since they are a unit, as you so often remind us, defenses are the hardest to predict at draft time. I mean everyone, I mean EVERYone, during the preseason thought Chicago and St. Louis were going to be great this year and Pittsburgh was just about every prognosticator's #1 going in. Also, the reality of the unpredictability of defenses combined with the plethora there are and the fact that they don't get "injured," as you so often state, decreases their value in keeper leagues, even deep keeper leagues, as it is very hard to justify keeping a defense over a "player."
NEXT, you talk about a solid defensive performance's being almost impossible to overcome. That TOTALLY depends on the system. According to the two systems I played under this year, the GBRFL and CBFL's, that would not be the case. A REALLY DOMINANT defensive performance could make things difficult, but not insurmountable.

Well ... I don't know.
Ugley asked me why I took a D so early, and I just tried to answer his question with my thinking on it.
I suppose no "system" is perfect.
I sure don't win every year with it.
It just makes sense to me. And seems to serve me well.
