NFL Mock Draft Commentary

You always have to talk smack about other's choices....

Here's a listing as of 3/6/03 of all of the picks so far:

1.  Carson Palmer, QB, USC (Barnaby)
2.  Charles Rogers, WR, MSU (Philly)
3.  Jordan Gross, OT, Utah (Dirk)
4.  Byron Leftwich, QB, Marshall (Steg)
5.  Terrence Newman, CB, Kansas St. (Barnaby)
6.  Terrell Suggs, DL, ASU (Tony)
7.  Jimmy Kennedy, DT, Nittany Lions (Philly)
8.  Andre Johnson, WR, Miami (pauli)
9.  Marcus Trufant, CB Washington State (Jetdoc)
10.  William Joseph, DT, Miami (Barnaby)
11.  Dewayne Robertson, DT, Kentucky (Philly)
12.  Kwame Harris, OT, Stanford (pauli)
13.  Rex Grossman, QB Florida (Keypunk)
14.  EJ Henderson, LB, Maryland (Dirk)
15.  Boss Bailey, LB, Ohio St (Barnaby)
16.  Andre Woolfolk, CB Oklahoma (Shaggy)
17.  Rien Long, DT, Washington State (Jetdoc)
18.  Eric Steinbach, OG/OT, Iowa (Jetdoc)
19.  Kevin Williams, DT, Oklahoma State (Dirk)
20.  Kyle Boller, QB, Univ. Of California (pauli)
21.  George Foster, OT, Georgia (Barnaby)
22.  Jerome McDougle, DE, Miami (Philly)
23.  Jonathon Sullivan, DT, Georgia (Dirk)
24.  Ty Warren, DT, Texas A & M (KJ 76)
25.  Vince Wilfork, DT, Miami (Barnaby)
26.  Michael Haynes, DE, Penn State (Philly)
27.  Vince Manuwai, OL, Hawaii (Dirk)
28.  Larry Johnson, RB, Penn State (Steg)
29.  Dave Ragone, QB, Louisville (Barnaby)
30.  Kenny Peterson, DE, Ohio State (Philly)
31.  Jimmy Wilkerson, DE, Oklahoma (BW)
32.  Gerald Hayes, LB, Pittsburgh (BW)
33.  Terry Pierce, LB, Kansas State (Philly)
34.  Onterrio Smith, RB, Oregon (Steg)
35.  Lee Suggs, RB, Virginia Tech (BW)
36.  Chris Kelsay, DE, Nebraska (Philly)
37.  Justin Fargas, RB , USC (Tony_O)
38.  Kelly Washington, WR, Tennessee (BW)
39.  Taylor Jacobs, WR, Florida (Philly)
40.  Jeff Faine, C, Notre Dame (BW)
41.  ? ? ?

First off, regarding my pick with the Panthers....Carolina is in desperate need of offensive help at every skilled position.  Given that, I don't think that ANYONE available at this point is worth the 9th pick overall...Rogers/Palmer/Leftwich/Johnson would be their choices if they were available.  Given that, Carolina has a very good defense, but if there was one weakness last year, it was their corner play.  Trufant has the makings to be a stud cover corner in the NFL for years to come - if the four players listed above are gone in the draft (and Carolina can't trade up to get them or down to get another WR using a later pick), I guess they go CB here.

First of all, great move on the creation of a commentary thread, Jetdoc.  This is definitely the way to go.

I do want to say this, however, guys.  I know originality is typically a boon in life.  Posting picks during a message-board-hosted mock draft would NOT be one of those times, though.  Point being...  Let's keep those numbers before our picks!  It makes it much easier to reference picks when you are scrolling down the page.  If we don't all put the numbers, it can start getting confusing, especially the longer this gets.  Thank you for your anticipated cooperation!

I picked Andre Johnson for the Jags for the simple reason that they need playmakers in that offense. With the new coaching staff in place, and Brunell signed for several years, they need a WR to compliment Jimmy Smith.

Johnson, many scouts say, is a Terrell Owens waiting to develop. Nice pick here if the Jags can get him.

Baltimore could go WR, OT, or DL with their first pick. I chose Joseph over Kwami Harris just due to the fact that they could still more than likely et a decent O-Lineman in round two or three. Joseph is a HUGE presence in the middle of the D-Line the Ravens sorely missed when Sam Adams left.

I took Kwame Harris here for the Rams because they have a glaring weakness at O-line. Pace will be there next year, but his future is in doubt with the Rams. The right tackle position was terrible last year with John St. Clair. Adam Timmerman is a free agent next year, and he will not be playing tackle this year, as previuosly rumored. Grant Williams and St. Clair wil battle it out for the starting job, but Harris could play either tackle position, and makes a fine insurance policy for the future, if the Rams can't sign Pace for a long term contract.

The other tempting pick here was Boss Bailey, but a dominant big tackle like Harris doesn't come around often, and it fills the  biggest need for the Rams. If he was available in this spot, I'd be ecstatic!

I guess I will be the first to talk smack......

NO WAY THE REDSKINS TAKE GROSSMAN FROM THE 13th SPOT!!

Is there a redo?  The Redskins need a WR and D Lineman.    Remember, this is the team that wants to trade up to get Andre Johnson since they couldn't get Charles Rogers from the Lions.

In addition, no way Rex Grossman goes this early.  He did not seperate himself from the pack at the combine.  He is one of 4 second tier guys.  He will be LUCKY to go in the first round.  But if he goes, he goes to the Packers later in the draft.

With all that being said..................

It is actually a good idea to take him IF they picked later in the draft.  Maybe the skins will trade down.

I would like to participate, but my knowledge of college players and the needs of each team are not what they should be. I'll leave it to the experts.

The New England Patriots are going Defense with their first three picks.  They need every position on defense because they are the oldest defense in the league.  Their strategy of picking up players in June worked one year, but was a disaster last year.

They're going to sign David Boston or Curtis Conway, therefore not needing a WR in the draft. All the D-Lineman they were looking to get, will be taken earlier. Rex Grossman WILL be taken with the 13th spot.

I've seen several mocks that say the Pack will select Grossman. I wouldn't put it past Spurrior, but this would be a dumb move on their part.

San Diego has several needs, but I chose Bailey because Junior ain't getting any younger, and Bailey can play the inside, moving Edwards back to his natural outside backer position...

I think Dirk is right on this one... They've got Patrick Ramsey, who Spurrier still believes in, and they recently grabbed a solid #2 in Rob Johnson.

There is NO FRIGGIN' WAY the Redskins take Rex Grossman at #13.  They need to get a speedy receiver.  Price will end up in Atlanta or Buffalo.  Boston won't end up in DC because they already have a big receiver in Gardner.  They'll probably end up trading the pick to grab a burner at WR later in the round.

Went corner as every indication is the Chiefs are still looking good to land Hugh, lessening the need at de and shifting attention to the DBs.

Yes, I chose twice for the Saints, which made sense since I did enough research for one pick...

The Aints really needed a CB here, but I didn't see one that warranted selection this high.  I can see the Saints taking some big men to bolster their rushing attack/defense.  Good value for the picks as well.

#20 Denver, Kyle Boller. Tough choice here, but I went out on a limb. Depending on what happens with Jake Plummer, Boller is a great fit for the Broncos. They need a pass rushing defensive lineman, and McDougle was available, but Boller apparently has moved up everybody's charts with a bullet, due to his performance in the Blue Gray game and at the combine in Indy. He's 6'4, 215 and ran a 4.6, has great arm strength, and wears #7.

A possible franchise QB with this pick. John Elway, anyone? Adding him to the offensive mix with Portis and Lelie makes alot of sense for Shanahan.

Nice touch on including the list here. Thanks.

BW, with Boss and EJ Henderson gone, not a bad pick for the Browns at all. I can't see how the Browns will let that happen in April though. They've got to get lb help somewhere don't they?

Keep in mind, this is coming from an admited near vacuum of college football player knowledge.

23rd pick and the Falcons get Jonathon Sullivan.  What an unbelievable steal.   He is a perfect fit for the Falcons.  Left Georgia early as a junior. Had a good combine.   Atlanta needs a cornerback and defensive tackle, but the top quality corners are gone.   Will take a cornerback in the second round....either Reshaun Mathis out of Bethune Cookman or Derrick Strait out of Oklahoma.

Thank God all these other teams are taking QB's.   It lets all the good players fall!!  IN MY OPINION, only 3 total QB's will be taken in the first round.  We already have 4 taken.

I still think Grossman goes to the Redskins with the 13th pick, though.

Keyshawn--

You should pick again.  What the hell do I know.  It is only an opinion.  ANd as I said,  Grossman would be a perfect match, just not at the 13th position.  And, with Danny signing so many free agents, they aren't going to have any wholes to fill, so why not Grossman.

Looked at Mel Kipers rankings today.  He NOW has 4 QB's in the top 25 players.  Maybe 4 QB's WILL be taken in the first round.

Pittsburgh needs help at a few positions.  To be honest, if Boller or Grossman had not been chosen, they could of gone QB.  They have needs at safety, OL, QB, and DE.  Went with Vince Manuwai because he was best player on the board.

In this draft Green Bay is fucked. They wanted Grossman or Boller, and both are off the board. The tell themselves, "We better grab a QB or we're screwed", so they grab Ragone before somebody else does in the 2nd.
