Draft prospect shot in the back...

In a potentially tragic turn of events, the face of the drafts first round was shaped last night in a drive by shooting involving cornerback Dennis Weathersby.

Former Oregon State All American Dennis Weathersby is in critical condition after he was shot three times in the back by suspected gang members on Sunday, police said.
A potential first-round National Football League draft pick, this will obviously effect his future.

Weathersby was apparently getting into his car parked on Merridian Avenue at Citrus View Avenue when several alleged gang members in a white SUV drove up and its occupants opened fire, Williams said.

"There has been in that area particularly a lot of shootings over the past year or two that have been between rival gangs,' Williams said. "So, the potential is high that that is a factor.'

All-American and Pacific-10 selection, Weathersby was only the fourth player to ever be named to the All-Academic team four times.   After a solid career at Oregon State Weathersby had improved his draft status after surprisingly turning in a pair of forties under the 4.4 barrier during February's combine.

I know getting shot is not his fault but what is it with these prospects?  They have the biggest payday of their lives approaching.  You would think their agents would have them under lock and key in the days leading up to the draft.  Not that it would help his medical condition but if he were only drafted before this happened at least he would have some financial security.

Turns out he was only hit by one bullet... the media loves hyperbole it seems...

Anyway, I'm surprised that Weathersby wasn't picked on the first day.  Doctors anticipate a 100% recovery before training camp begins.

The guy was walking back from an Easter service with a friend when he was shot, through no apparent fault of his own.  I really feel bad for the guy.  He's done everything right and the gunshot wounds shouldn't affect his pro career, yet no one wants to draft him...

OK... Dennis Weathersby was the first player taken on Day 2.  First pick of the 4th round to Cincinnati.  Kudos to the Bungles for not bungling...

Ya know, the Bengals are having an outstanding draft.
