This is from a Ohio newspaper....... Sean McClelland Dayton Daily News 04/22/2003 Some insiders believe the Cleveland Browns already have decided on a starting quarterback and that the supposed training camp "competition" between Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb won't materialize after all. They think Holcomb is the choice and that Couch will be traded on draft day - the Dallas Cowboys supposedly are the most interested - or released June 1. Of those scenarios, the first seems more likely. But it would not be without risk. Neither quarterback is the poster child for durability. Each has missed significant chunks of time with broken legs and other maladies the past couple of seasons. Holcomb, coming off a scintillating playoff performance in a losing effort at Pittsburgh,at least appears to be on equal footing with Couch in the eyes of those who matter. Given every opportunity this offseason to reinforce Couch's standing as starter, coach Butch Davis has gone out of his way to declare the position up for grabs. If Couch indeed is traded or by some other means severed from the roster, the only competition in training camp would involve whether Josh Booty can beat out Canadian Football League refugee Pat Barnes for the backup job. Barnes, after being released by three NFL teams(Chiefs, Raiders, A 49ers), did not exactly dominate the CFL. He was a backup last season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, completing 17 passes. The previous year, as a backup in Calgary, he attempted three passes. If nothing else, you have to figure his arm will be fresh. The Browns have enough quarterbacks. However, they would be in the market for one toward the end of the draft if Couch and his exorbitant contract are sent packing.
