TIME RAN OUT!  The Viking Debacle

According to Sal Paolantonio of ESPN, by way of WIP Sports Radio in Philly...

The Vikings really didn't screw this up.  Sure they missed their pick, a couple times, but they really had targeted Kevin Williams as their selection, but knew he would be around later.

They had a deal, in principle, to move down to #10 and let the Ravens move up to #7 to select Byron Leftwich.  There was some dissention in the Raven camp about QB however.  Ozzie Newsome really wanted Leftwich, however Coach Billick and QB coach Matt Cavanaugh actually liked Kyle Boller better.  The Ravens actually had Leftwich written on their card and were ready to go to the podium, but time ran out on the Vikes and a trade had not been fully completed.

Because the Ravens could not decide exactly what they wanted to do, they missed out on selecting Leftwich.  Some are saying they made out even better because Suggs dropped, but they lucked into that one.

The wildcard here is that new Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio had the Vikes and the Ravens on the phone to stall them and were ready to select Leftwich as soon as the time ran out on the Vikes.  Nice work by the rookie coach.

I have never heard of such a thing! You can miss your turn? That's great! So how does it work when you miss your pick? Do you go to the end of the line? Do you just miss it all together?

You missed it this weekend?  The Vikes fucked up and did not make their pick.  Once time runs out, the next team makes their pick, YET, the Vikes can make their pick at anytime.  So what happened?  Two teams RAN to the podium to turn in their picks before the Vikings got around to actually making their pick.  The draft went so fast because in the course of 4 minutes, 4 teams made their pick.  It was a FUN draft to watch!!  Very fun!!

So the Vikes ended up making the 9th pick in the draft instead of the 7th.

The best is that this is the second year the Vikes have done this.

Yeah, I've never been big of watching the NFL draft, or any draft for that matter. After the really big names are gone, I have no idea who all the players are.

It's hard to believe that something like that could happen at this level... I mean, I've heard of running out of time in an online fantasy draft, but this is ridiculous!

Thanks for the update
