Auction Leagues
« on: Jul 31st, 2003, 10:38pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I wanted to start a thread that contains specific information and discussion relating to auction leagues. I have searched a number of sites and it is hard to get specific information on auction leagues.

I am in three leagues and two of them are converting to auction leagues this year.  This adds a whole new twist to the "draft".

Here are some of the topics I would like to discuss.

(1) League organization.  How many keepers?  How long can you keep them?  What happens when owners leave the league?

(2) How to value players?  How much do you bid on players the first year when all players are available and in subsequent years when there are players protected?

(3) How to run the auction draft.

Since I am the commissioner in both the leagues that are switching to the auction format (I wonder whose idea it was to switch   ) I have already given these topics some thought.

I will make my league charter available to anyone who wants it.  I would like to get your feedback and you can feel free to use it if you want to start a new auction league or convert your current league.

I am in the process of developing a spreadsheet to value players for the draft.  When I am finished with it I will post it here for you guys to comment on.

So, if any of you have experience or insight    with auction leagues please post here.  I can use all the help I can get.

EXCELLENT post!  But, based on our board descriptions, this thread is MUCH more suited to "between the 20's".  As such, it will be moved there.  Thank you for your anticipated understanding of what we are trying to accomplish here with "respect" to providing a well organized message-board environment as well as your future compliance.

I'll be interested to see your auction value rankings.  I've never done an auction league and this will be my first year in a keeper league.

I'll be interested to hear what others have to say and also to hear your experiences once you've done the drafts.

PrimTime, I have never tried an auction league though, I would like to one of these days.
As I was trying to sneak it upon my league, some membranes didn't like the idea at all and so I had to scrap it. Although, the research I obtained was already complete.
I found this web site called "RedEyeSports" and they have been at their auction league for some 14 odd years. I loved their rules mainly because they were easily managable and understandable as I found some auction/keeper/salary cap leagues to be waaaaaaaaay to into it and that goes, even for me (I'm usually pushing the intricate stuff).

Check that web site out and check their rules out. He has them displayed for all to see and it looked really kool!

Hope that helps out some. Good Luck!

We are also in the process of switching our keeper league into an auction league.

We keep two players, and upon transition, you get to keep up to two players based on their auction value as calculated by footballguys.com.

After this transition year, you add $5 to the salary you paid in 2003 to any THREE keepers that you want.  The longest that you can keep any player is three years.

Salary cap of $200.  Here are the player values that have been assigned thus far (but does not represent who will actually be kept):

QB

Culpepper $40
Manning $36 (no idea why)
Vick $35
McNabb $32
Gannon $30
Garcia $26
Warner $24
Favre $15
Green $13

RB

Tomlinson $71
Portis $68
Williams $65
Holmes $63
Faulk $61
McAllister $59
Alexander $57
Henry $53
James $50
A Green $48
Taylor $47
Barber $44
Lewis $42
Dillon $41
Garner $39
Davis $34
George $28
A Smith $17
Thomas $16

WR

Harrison $55
Moss $51
Owens $46
Moulds $43
Horn $37
Holt $34
Burress $31
Coles $29
Ward $28
Toomer $28
Driver $27
J Smith $27
Price $26
Conway $26
Bruce $26
R Smith $25
Booker $25
Gardner $25
Keyshawn $24
Stallworth $23
Troy Brown $22
D Jackson $20
Thrash $18

Hopefully this helps.

We just had our first auction draft.

10 teams, Start 1 QB, 3RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1K, 1Def
Salary cap is $30
Scoring: 6pts per TD (rush, rec and def), 3 pts per TD pass, 1 pt per 20 yards passing, 1 pt per 10 yards rushing, 1 pt per reception, 1 pt per 10 yards receiving

QB Plummer 1.20
QB Collins   .30
QB C. Batch .10

RB R. Williams  6.20
RB S. Davis  3.80
RB S. Mack  1.30
RB J. Bettis .90
RB N. Davenport .10

WR  M. Harrison  7.10
WR  E. Moulds  3.50
WR D. Jackson 1.40
WR T. Pinkston .30
WR R. Wayne  1.00

TE T. Heap 1.90
TE F. Jones .10

Def  Pittsburgh .40
Def New England .20

K Josh Brown  .10
K Hayden Epstein .10

I'll post the other 9 teams when I get the final rosters.  A few other notables are :

QBs: Vick 6.10, McNabb 4.60, Culpepper 4.80, Manning 4.00, Warner .90

RBs: Tomlinson 7.20, Faulk 5.90, Portis 6.20, Alexander 6.50, McAllister 6.40, Holmes 6.50, Henry 6.00

WRs: Moss 6.40, Owens 6.20, Horn 4.10, Ward 3.50, Burress 3.50, Holt 1.70, Bruce 1.50, K Robinson 3.20

TEs: Shockey 3.30, Gonzo 2.70

Surprising how low the Rams went.  Holt and Bruce went for half of Burress and Ward.  Warner at only .90 -- Wow

I called out the first player and got Williams for 6.20 which turned out to be a good value based on what the other top RBs went for.

I wanted Harrison because we get one point per reception so I had to pay top dollar for him.

I was the first person to call out a TE and I put Heap out first because I thought everyone would want Gonzo and Shockey so they wouldn't bid up Heap, but wait for Shockey or Gonzo.  It worked like a charm because Heap at 1.90 vs 2.70 for Gonzo and 3.30 for Shockey is a steal.

At the end I ended up with a little extra money so I over paid a little Wayne thinking that he is protection in case Harrison gets hurt for a game or two I can go with Wayne and still get good production.

I am a little weak at QB, but I am hoping to mix and match Plummer and Collins into a servicable QB.  There was no way I was paying the top $$ for the QB's under our scorng system.  I took Batch on a flyer that Maddox will get hurt or benched.  If he does, then Batch can go into my QBBC.  My only other choices were Carr, Kitna, or Blake (none of who got drafted; so if need be I can pick up one as a waiver)

I probably should have spent a little more on my kickers since they are both rookies.  On the positive side they play for high scoring teams.  Who knows, I may be hitting the waiver wire for a kicker.  One usually pops out during the year.

If I had it to do over again, I would spend a little more on my RB2.  Instead of Davis at 3.80, I could have gotten Dillion at 4.60.  At the time I was trying to stick to budget.  I took a shot with Davenport.  If Green gets hurt, he may produce like a top 15 RB.  I will need to mix and match Mack and Bettis based on matchups.

Let me know what you think.

Some quick thoughts on the auction draft before I call it a night:

(1) It was really fun

(2) It was fast paced.  We moved pretty fast so you had to be on your toes and think on your feet.  We drafted 19 playes per team in 4 1/2 hours.

(3) There is a lot of strategy involved especially when you take into account bye weeks.  You need to bid on the guys who fit into your team based on their bye weeks.

(4)  People overpay for QB's

(5) There are a lot of bargains, but it is hard to see them until they arise.  I would have bid 1.00 for warner but I already had Plimmer at 1.20 and I could not fit another 1.00 QB on my roster.

I think that at the end of the year, you'll be smiling that you took Davis instead of Dillon. Nothing against Corey, but I think Stephen will have a great year.

I just wonder why I see so many auction drafts with weird salary caps.  Doesn't anyone use the standard $100 any more?

But, based on what I've seen so far, there seem to be more perceived "studs" this year than in past years.  I've frequently seen almost 1/2 of the cap blown on one player, now it seems like the most is around 1/3 of the cap amount.  Interesting...

So are kickers a dime a dozen.

Now, if we just had a smilie getting "hooked" off the stage this thread would be safe once again.

Good info here, and I am determined to add a dynasty/auction leauge to my collection of leagues. Soon, some day soon.
