Philly's Mock Draft, V3.0 (with trades)
« on: Apr 20th, 2004, 9:16am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

1. Chargers
Eli Manning, QB, Mississippi

The Chargers demand too much for any team to move up, so they stay put and grab a franchise QB.

2. Browns (Raiders receive the #7 pick, #68 pick, and RB William Green)
Robert Gallery, OT, Iowa

The Browns grab themselves the next great left tackle.  Garcia will have time to throw and Suggs will have room to run.

3. Cardinals
Sean Taylor, S, Miami

All the talk about QBs and WRs was a ruse.  The Cards need help on defense and Taylor is the best defensive player available.

4. Steelers (Giants receive #11 pick, #75 pick, and 2005 2nd round pick)
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Miami of Ohio

The Steelers move up and get the QB they hope can revive the passing game. He'll replace Tommy Maddox before week eight.

5. Jaguars (Redskins receive #9 pick, #70 pick, and S Donovan Darius)
Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Pittsburgh

The Skins grabbed an extra pick as they wanted. The Jags, surprised Fitzgerald was still available, grabbed the best WR in the draft to pair with Byron Leftwich.

6. Lions
Kellen Winslow, TE, Miami

The Lions wanted to trade down, but are more than happy to add Winslow to their offense.

7. Raiders (from Browns)
Roy Williams, WR, Texas

The Raiders waited and got the player they wanted all along.

8. Falcons
DeAngelo Hall, CB, Virginia Tech

The Falcons have many needs on defense, but none bigger than CB.  Hall can handle return duties as well.

9. Redskins (from Jacksonville)
Kenechi Udeze, DE, USC.

The Skins trade down and still get an outstanding pass rusher to improve their defense.

10. Texans
Vince Wilfork, DT, Miami

Massive run-stuffer will take pressure off other Texans defenders.

11. Giants (from Steelers)
Steven Jackson, RB, Oregon St.

Giants surprise with selection, but Coughlin knows he needs a bruising tailback to compete in tough NFC East.

12. Jets
Chris Gamble, CB, Ohio St.

Herm Edwards loves defensive backs and gets the one he wanted.

13. Bills
Philip Rivers, QB, NC State

The Bills select a QB to learn from, and eventually replace, Drew Bledsoe.

14. Patriots (Bears receive #21 pick and #63 pick)
Jonathan Vilma, LB, Miami

The Pats leapfrog everyone and grab the best LB on the board and still have another pick in the round.

15. Buccaneers
Reggie Williams, WR, Washington

The Bucs add a dangerous receiver to their offense and address a long-standing need.

16. Eagles (Niners receive #28 pick, #89 pick, and OG John Welbourn)
DJ Williams, LB, Miami

The Eagles really wanted Vilma, but Williams will be an upgrade over anyone they currently have.

17. Broncos
Kevin Jones, RB, Virginia Tech

Forget the workouts and 40 times, Jones is a dangerous RB and will flourish in Denver.

18. Saints
Dunta Robinson, CB, South Carolina

The Saints and Jim Haslett are desperate for defensive help and Robinson is what they need.

19. Vikings
Will Smith, DE, Ohio St.

The Vikings have this pick made and sprint to the table so they won't miss out on a stud who inexplicably slid this far.

20. Dolphins
Shawn Andrews, OT, Arkansas

The Dolphins add a solid tackle to give new QB AJ Feeley time to throw.

21. Bears (from Patriots)
Marcus Tubbs, DT, Texas

The Bears get a big run-stuffer who will allow Urlacher to make plays again.

22. Cowboys
Chris Perry, RB, Michigan

Not the RB that the Tuna really wanted, but a versatile back who will upgrade the offense.

23. Seahawks
Randy Starks, DT, Maryland

Starks helps to solidify a weak Seahawk front seven.

24. Bengals
Will Poole, CB, USC

Smooth CB shores up a secondary in limbo.

25. Packers
JP Losman, QB, Tulane

Losman plays a lot like a young Brett Favre.  He'll be tutored by one of the best.

26. Rams
Ben Troupe, TE, Florida

Athletic pass-catching TE should open up the Ram offense again and give Bulger more options.

27. Titans
Antwan Odom, DE, Alabama

Pure pass rusher fills the void left by a departed Jevon Kearse.

28. Niners (from Eagles)
Michael Clayton, WR, LSU

Will be a huge weapon for new QB Tim Rattay.

29. Colts
Derrick Strait, CB, Oklahoma

Steady performer will make it tougher to run up the score on the Colts.

30. Chiefs
Rashaun Woods, WR, Oklahoma St.

Chiefs take some of the pressure off Priest and Gonzo with an NFL-ready WR.

31. Panthers
Lee Evans, WR, Wisconsin

Panthers are no longer just a great defensive team.

32. Patriots
Karlos Dansby, LB, Auburn

Pats add a rangy LB who can cover the TE and rush the passer.

Good job Philly .

I like the fact that Smith again fell to the Vikes at 19  . I have read elsewhere though that Smith's value is increasing, Udeze's is falling and that Smith will be the first DE taken. What do you think the chances of that happening are?

Also about the Browns and Raiders, I read on another board (can't remember where) about a month ago that William Green was shopping for houses in Oakland. I also heard that Northcutt alluded to a trade on the NFL Network (which I don't have) earlier and that he and Couch where going to the Raiders in exchange for the pick. Just food for thought .

I don't see the Giants drafing a running back. Not with all the holes they have at OT, MLB, FS etc....

I think I mentioned it before, and it's my own personal bias showing through, but I prefer a bigger DE than a smaller one.  It seems like every time I do a mock, Will Smith falls.  I like him as a player, but I guess I'm not sold on him completely right now.  However, it's perfectly logical to put Smith ahead of Udeze on a draft board (as I'm sure some NFL teams have).

I just think the Browns are in a good position to move up and grab either Robert Gallery or Ben Roethlisberger, the two players they really want.  Oakland has the flexibility to move down, so it seemed like a good move.  I know Cleveland is shopping Northcutt (and are currently asking too much for him) and that he could be trade bait to move up in the draft, however I felt that the Raiders would demand William Green (he seems like he should be wearing the Black and Silver and Cleveland can afford to move him with Suggs and Jackson in the fold).  I wasn't aware that he was shopping for a home in Oakland though.  That's nice to know in light of my prediction.

The players they seem most interested in (Manning, Gallery, and Taylor) are all gone by #4 in my mock, so I didn't see them taking Roethlisberger and I know other teams will be approaching them with trade proposals if this is the scenario.  I know RB isn't their biggest need, but it's still a need because Tiki is undersized and a fumble waiting to happen.  Ron Dayne is a dog.  So if Steven Jackson is available at #11, that would be the best pick for them other than WR, which I believe isn't as urgent a need.  They'll still get Jacob Rogers with their second round pick and can add an OG or S with their 3rd or the pick they receive from the Steelers.

As I said, it would be a surprise, but I think it would work.  Tiki could still be a third down back while Jackson learns the way of the NFL.

Finally, Jim, you disappear from this site and only briefly log in every couple days and all you can do is mock my mock?!?

Dude, if you only knew how busy my life is. Three kids, full time job, cub scouts, basketball, t-ball, school board meetings, union meetings, fundraising...not enough hours in the day! Just wait until you have more kids and they are a bit older!! Then you'll see!

Not mocking your daft at all bro, it looks real good. I just don't see the Giants drafting a RB. If they do, that would be all right with me. I do see them trading down if Gallery,Manning and Taylor are gone. Good job.

C'mon Jim... I gave up the cub scouts and t-ball while I was still in elementary school.

No worries Jim.  I was just giving you hard time.  It's the least I could do after you stiffed me and left me with this whole profile project.    j/k  - I'm really enjoying it.

#11 was a tough spot for the Giants.  I could see them dropping again to stockpile some more picks and then grab Shawn Andrews or Jonathan Vilma if either one is still around.

Very interesting take on the draft Philly.  I like it.

I think you have a few interesting trades in there. Not sure I agree with all of them, but they are as good as guesses as any.

I have a feeling there will be a ton of trades in this draft.  I can't wait for Saturday!
